The only problem with this change in character direction is that Orton's first reaction to DJ Roomba would be to drop the ground, pound his fists and then punt it through a window.

I would figuratively kill for an angle where Zack Ryder wants to buy into a WWE-themed nightclub (possibly using left over pieces from WWF New York/The World), and the only investors he can get are Titus O'Neil, Curt Hawkins and Randy Orton.

So we now know that WWE has signed Awesome Kong to do a Donna gimmick. They already brought in Paul Bearer to play Jerry.

Wait you mean to tell me that he didn't dump her after Batista banged her?

I don't get to see enough Del Rio. That entrance has to be one of the greatest things to come into wrestling in a long time. I fall for it every time.

I don't get the Randy Orton thing. His interviews are just jumbled up cliches and his ring work doesn't ever leave me wanting to see more. He reminds me of Sid, a guy I can see being over but I don't understand why he is THAT over.

Live from Phoenix ...

(... albeit a bit tardy, & getting ready to run down to Tucson. I'll come back & tell you about the dark match later.)

What's the del with white ring posts & ropes?? Have they been doing that for a while now, & I just didn't notice til I was there?

The tone was absolutely weird from the opening. Live, we get the short video opener. And then that falls directly into the Nexus taped summary. Then, while you're listening to Cole, we're just sitting there -- they didn't air that whole chunk of stuff in the arena, so we're just hangin' out. Then we get another taped opening which is even longer. Then finally we got the fireworks proper opening.

We didn't get the "John Cena probably won't be here tonight" message, & I figured Cole was talking about why Lawler wasn't there.

So then Miz comes out, hangs out in the ring while you all watch the Miz attack on Lawler, & Cole & Josh chitchat.

Talk about an unusually frigid opening! Naturally when Morrison & Miz start on mid-ramp, we're not quite ready!!

Their match was excellent. Sometimes you can tell when they're off to commercial, but they did fabulously working all through. They did all sorts of brawling through the crowd during the first commercial break. They hadn't quite walked through the spot into the metal fence -- Miz was trying to figure out how to get the welded-on "feet" off of the fence section. Fortunately they were all careful & missed them during the spot. It was even better live than what you got on TV!

We had no idea that they did a Bella-switch. Not that it made any diffference. Natalie & Melina were good. Eve shouldn't be out there at all, much less getting a pin.

Usos vs. Santino & Kozlov was there. People like Santino, & otherwise, it was filler.

Good Punk promo, & nice interaction with Barrett.

Why Alberto del Rio?? I get why we might need to borrow a body, since Cena is out. But this guy? I am completely not a fan. His promo was tortuously bad, slow, boring. R-Truth comes out & wakes up the crowd. And then the match was bad besides. I know R-Truth is better than that, but I suppose there's only so much he can do. The whole mid-match commercial break was blatantly obvious & really just awful.

We were baffled why they showed the football stadium.

Five years ago, I never would have believed that Randy Orton would get the biggest pop of the night.

Main event was a very good "big man" match. I always think it's funny when a match looks significantly different live than it does on TV. The rejected opportunities for "just walk out the damn door" got to be pretty funny by the end, but it was still entertaining. One of the funniest was just as y'all came back from commercial. Sheamus & Barrett were both on top of the cage tossing Randy back in, & it didn't occur to either one of them to just drop down to the floor??

I think people were expecting Cena to run out & do something, so it was fun when Punk came out instead. Also amusing to compare Punk skittering up & down the outside of the cage, compared to the big boys.

"WALK OUT THE DOOR!"

After y'all left, we got just a bit of additional business. They hoisted up the cage, Miz & Riley came back out & chucked Randy out of the ring. Big boos for Miz trying to talk, & Cole came into the ring. :I for one want to hear what the Miz has to say." Miz promo'd on over the boo-ing. "We 3 are a coalition." Randy slithered back in, RKO'd Riley, & Miz bailed, leaving Cole in ring with Randy. Randy kicks Cole, which basically drops him. Miz jumps back in, & ends up eating the RKO.

Randy is definitely not a natural as a face, but he's trying. He even went over & hugged the white-haired little old lady in the front row.

So, overall, excellent start, entertaining end, & really boring middle.

Orton looks like a goof if he doesn't win the Rumble. As over as he is, he'd have to win it, and he just did that year before last.

Because Miz has spent the last month having competitive matches with a senior citizen and needed a serious credibility boost? But I grant you Del Rio.

Because that's the worst idea ever? Like, "Let's Invade Russia in the Winter" bad, on the historical scale of bad ideas. 3 hour RAWs suck. I am fast forwarding the shit out of two hour RAWs most weeks.

The hyperbole police will be after me for this, but remember when people used to talk about how WCW was a "television company" and the WWF was a "wrestling company"? Well, WWE is officially a television company. I remember at the RAW from May in Toronto, having the same kind of deflated feeling during commercial breaks. And that was a commercial-free RAW! Yet, there were commercials in Canada, and thus dead moments. It was weird. Also, on that episode, Edge and Orton picked each other's opponents. They showed a "Pick Your Poison" graphic, but they never actually told the crowd Orton was picking Edge's opponent and vice versa. I guess we were just supposed to figure it out. I can't imagine this lack of engagement for the live audience does anything but hurt crowd reactions, which hurts the TV. Just all eerily, eerily WCW-like.

Pretty weak show after a high-energy, fun edition last week. I agree the tone was off. Also, what was with people screwing up common figures of speech? Cole said Cena's injury after the NeXus beatdown was "exasperated" by Barrett over the weekend. I'm sure "exacerbated" is the word for that context, unless Cena's injury is just super annoyed now. And then later, Orton said he was "resolved to the fact that nice guys finish last". Certainly he must have meant resigned. No one else seems to have caught it, but it really bothered me.

Final thoughts: Melina has surely pissed someone off royally. Bwhahaha get it? Royally? Ahem. Or, it's possible they just aren't going to push her as hard anymore what with the signing of Kong.

Barrett can't be a babyface. Babyfaces with accents don't work. Just ask Savio Vega. Also, they could have done the Punk thing way better than that. That could've used a fireball!

Del Rio seemed nervous on the live show. Was he struggling to find his words or something? And was anyone else creeped out when Truth told him to go back "where he came from?" In Arizona? No? Okay then.

Top 5 reasons why Alberto Del Rio went over clean:

5. He's fucking Alberto Del Rio.
4. His opponent was R-Truth, aka The Guy That Should've Been Fired Along With Vance Archer and Caylen Croft And All Those Guys.
3. He's fucking Alberto Del Rio.
2. For that "send you back where you came from" line alone, Del Rio was the face in that match, and faces should go over clean as much as possible.

And the most important reason Alberto Del Rio went over clean:

1. HE'S FUCKING ALBERTO DEL RIO.

(Why, yes, I did start watching Letterman again, how did you know?)

For what it's worth, Chris Jericho gave his approval via Twitter:

Congrats to @mikethemiz @TheRealMorrison @WadeBarrett @RandyOrton and Sheamus for great performances last night! The Torch has been passed.

I think it's notable, because that "torch" comment gives me the impression that he may not be coming back at all.

Didn't Jericho clothesline the guy passing the torch to Orton on his return in '07?

It's what we do with Jericho's Twitter. It's why it exists.

I think Wade is a better heel but anyone who thinks he can't be a face is forgetting the reactions he got for verbally punking the rest of Nexus on the NXT finale.

Look, I'm not an R-Truth fan, but the guy is over, and has an entrance that gets the live crowd going, so I don't see why he should've been let go.

As for Del Rio going over clean, I don't see why it is that odd. He's lost a fair share of matches on SD, so why not give him a win on the bigger show against an over face to give him some credibility? Especially if they have any plans of moving him to Raw if/when they do a draft this year.

It should be interesting to see where the WWE puts Barrett now (he should do pretty well solo or will he feud with Nexus/ Punk now?).

On the other hand, having Punk in Nexus and being leader allows Punk yet again to be a main event player and have a new person to feud with Cena.

Good way to kick off the new year with Raw but a match like Morrison and Miz should have been saved for a PPV because at least it would have been something pretty new to see on a PPV in terms of a match and feud.

Hey, you're over, the WWE needs to push new faces, it's a match made in heaven. Hopefully, you're not going over, though. (I'd like Miz to make it to midsummer as champ.)

My favorite part of RAW was either the part where Wade Barrett (with a hurt shoulder) decided to try and climb out instead of walking through the door when Sheamus and Orton were knocked out and not moving or the exact momemt when I realized that the only thing that could get me excited about Wrestlemania would be Rock/Cena.

(edited by DirtyMikeSeaver on 7.1.11 1215)

Kevin Kelly: "Mr. Austin, would you like to comment on Wade Keller's Take that endorsing the XFL hurts your anti-authority character?"

Steve Austin: "Oh shit, he actually said that? I thought the boys in the back were ribbing me!"

Kelly: "No, he really said that. Did they tell you the part about you sitting in the stands, looking all skeptical?"

Austin: "AHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah... oh man that was too much."

No, he's a NEW face, someone who hasn't been getting pushed recently. (They must have a lot of faith in him to book a heel/heel main event at WM. Unless they're turning Miz, a bad move IMO.)
