Sgt Dietrich from Barney Miller fame has passed away. I loved Barney Miller as a kid, and am surprised he was only 65, because he looked worn out on the show all the time.

A really underrated show with a brilliant cast. After Yemana,
Dietrich was my favorite character.

Here's Dietrich's first episode

but here's Steve Landesberg's first appearance

The young whippersnapper who came on the force to replace Fish doesn't survive Abe Vigoda. Abe will outlive us all. Farewell Dietrich.

That is because he was 74.

In defense of StaggerLee, the NYT obit originally stated that his age was 65. I nearly posted this before their correction...

Barney Miller was one of those shows that I watched when I was way too young to be watching what I was watching. See also: All In The Family and Good Times.

I didn't realize who this was. What a great show that was. I catch it on TV Land from time to time and realize now how great it was.

RIP

...or Carlo Rota!!! I know him from Little Mosque on the Prairie, and seeing him here was quite a shock. Seeing him play an arrogant prick in this show (as opposed to an affable nice guy in Little Mosque) is quite a fun change.
