TONIGHT! It's tag team action, as Edge teams up with Rey Mysterio to face Kane and Alberto Del Rio. We'll probably get some alleged comedy along the way. Plus, Dolph Ziggler defends the Intercontinental Championship against Kofi Kingston, because no one's ever seen THAT match before! SmackDown is NOW!

WWE - The Champ Is Here!

Ad for tonight's show that's about to come on right now.

No opening credits this week, as we go straight to Kane's pyro leading the World Heavyweight Champion down to the ring. Your hosts are...oh, good gravy! It's Team NXT on commentary this week, as it's Josh Matthews, Michael Cole, and Matt Striker. That should be...interesting. Kane's got the mic and it's promo time!

"This has gone on for way too long. All I want is my father back. Edge, you have tortured and tormented Paul Bearer like he's...just some toy in your game. Well, he's not a toy. He's my father! And he doesn't deserve this. *I* don't deserve this! Edge, I have apologized to you, I have done everything that you asked me to do and yet you insist on amusing yourself at the expense of the one person in the world that I care about. You know, despite all the things that I have done in the past, I am not a monster. I have feelings. And this is...this is tearing my heart out. Edge, YOU'RE the monster! You force me to chase you and to hunt you down and NOW, NOW...now...I am begging you...please...please...give...my father...back. This has to end. Do you hear me, Edge? I'm begging you, PLEASE, one way or another, this has to end tonight. Please!"

Edge appears on the TitanTron for rebuttal. He says that these offbeat shenanigans will continue through to TLC. Edge notes that he's rusty swinging a chair, so he's going to practice on Paul Bearer, who's still tied and gagged to the wheelchair. Paul Bearer's facial expressions here are gold, by the way. Edge teases swinging the chair. Then he teases it again. Then he DOES hit Paul Bearer with the chair! That sends Kane off and running up the ramp. It should be noted that the crowd is reacting to NONE of this. And who can blame them? How is Edge the FACE in this feud? Why should anyone boo Kane when he has a point about having done everything asked of him and when he's practically crying for his father to the camera? The dynamics here are all kinds of ass backwards.

Kane reaches the backstage area, but Edge has another chairshot wound up if Kane takes another step. Kane begs for Paul Bearer, so Edge whacks him with the chair and runs. Kane runs towards Paul Bearer and...yeah, it's another dummy, as this shitty angle picks up right where it left off, full-speed ahead.

"THE ALL-AMERICAN AMERICAN" JACK SWAGGER v. KAVAL
Justin Roberts is doing ring announcing duties, as Tony Chimel also has the night off, apparently. Michael Cole goes on a rant about how the Edge/Kane thing has gone on long enough and, God help me, I totally agree, especially when Striker makes the straw man argument that it's justified because of Paul Bearer's past. As Kaval makes his entrance, we see that we are taped from Dayton, OH.

We start with the lock-up and Swagger overpowers Kaval. The NXT announce crew go through Kaval's resume, ending with Cole pointing out that all he's done is lose. Can't argue with that logic, either. Kaval hits some Low Ki kicks and tries to whip Swagger, but Swagger continues asserting the power advantage. Kaval lands on Swagger's shoulder in the electric chair position and gets shoved off, as Kaval lands on his ankle. Yeah, this is going to be quick. Kaval refuses to let the ref call for the bell, so Swagger simply works over the leg, as Cole continues to hammer home that Kaval's won only one match. Kaval fights back with some chops, but Swagger tries to get the Swagger Bomb. Kaval fights out of the Swagger Bomb, but lands on the ankle again. Kaval still manages to fight back with some more kicks. Swagger goes for a vertical suplex, but Kaval counters it and he comes back with the rolling kick. He hits some more Low Ki kicks, as the corner charge hobble is caught. Swagger charges in and misses and Kaval gets a knee to the head. That gets 2. Kaval climbs the turnbuckles, like an idiot, and falls down under the pain of his busted ankle. Swagger takes advantage and the anklelock finishes at about 6 minutes.

WINNER: Jack Swagger - I love how much they're really trying to poke at the fact that Kaval's just a big loser that always loses. But when the babyface side of the midcard is decimated the way it is, shouldn't they try and...you know...build ANYONE up at this point? MVP, Matt Hardy, and Christian aren't walking through that door anytime soon.

Post-match, Swagger grabs the mic. It's promo time! "THAT is how it is done! When you absolutely, positively need results spelled out, it's S-W-A-G-G-E-R! And I need results right now. What happened last week was a travesty. Kofi Kingston should not be the number one contender for the Intercontinental Championship. Take a look!" We get footage of last week's Kofi/Swagger match. The controversy is supposedly (at least these are Striker's words) that when a superstar is touching the ropes, he can't get hit. HUH??? "Hello! Hello! Hello! I was clearly struck while being in the ropes. And WWE rules clearly state that if you're struck while you're in the ropes, that is ILLEGAL! The referee blew that call. Kofi Kingston cheated to get the victory! Kofi Kingston should not be the number one contender and that's why I am protesting tonight's Intercontinental Championship match. Because I'm the future fifth face on Mount Rushmore, I am the All-American American American. And any match for the Intercontinental Championship without Jack Swagger is unacceptable!" Are they making up rules now? What the hell was that?

We get a Tale of the Tape for the upcoming...Hornswoggle/Soaring Eagle match. They acknowledge that the Eagle is now Jack Swagger's FORMER mascot, as apparently that relationship has been severed. This "match" is next. Why do the wrestling gods hate me?

Ad break - Slammy Awards edition of Raw promo

HORNSWOGGLE (w/ROSA MENDES) v. THE SOARING EAGLE
No! Just...NO!!!

I will note, however, that this has to be the reason we got Matthews, Cole, and Striker tonight. Their commentary nearly saved this segment single-handedly, as they went into full NXT mode. Some of the gems:

-Cole: This is going to be like Tyson and Holyfield...
Josh: Matt's trying to tell a story here.
Cole: We're done hearing from Matt!
-Cole: Hornswoggle has to be careful here. It's a PG show. He can't flip the bird.
-Matt: ACME Bird Seed...so now we're going with the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote. Let's see what happens. ACME is spelled wrong, by the way.
Josh: Right, because it's copyrighted.
-Cole: I can't believe we're calling this!
Matt: We're not, we're just laughing.
-Cole: Come on, Eagle! Come on, Eagle! COME ON, EAGLE!!!
-Matt: Is he going Ballin'??? (Hi, MVP!)
-Cole: Please get up! You're endangered!
-Josh: (After the pin) Thank GOD!

WINNER: Hornswoggle - I know the roster's thin, but SERIOUSLY? Is this what it's come to?

Things, of course, get awkward when the announcers have to do a total 180 and go into Super Serious Mode to plug tonight's main event of Edge/Rey Mysterio and Kane/Alberto Del Rio.

Ad break

We go backstage to Teddy Long, as he welcomes in new Tag Team Champions Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov. Santino talks about how excited he is to go between both shows, as Kozlov does his best Lance Storm impression. Santino sings some Queen as Kozlov ignites a lighter, totally stone-faced. Interruption comes from Chavo Guerrero, who still works here, apparently! Chavo wants a piece of the champs and offers to find a partner, as Chavo does his own Queen rendition. Santino accepts the challenge and sings some more. Kozlov grins and says "Holla Holla" before immediately going back to Lance Storm mode.

Your hosts are Team NXT. Cole sings some Queen. Striker wonders about paying royalties. Josh shakes his head.

Coming up next, Dolph Ziggler defends the Intercontinental Championship against Kofi Kingston. Here's a Kofi Kingston video package!

We go backstage to...TODD GRISHAM? Wait, has someone been DEMOTED? What is going on here? Anyway, Grisham's backstage with Dolph Ziggler. Dolph says that Kofi's a lifelong contender and that people can relate to him and his failure. Dolph says he's a champion and Kofi will stay a contender. Grisham simply hangs his head down...like a guy that's just been demoted.

Ad break.

KOFI KINGSTON v. DOLPH ZIGGLER (w/VICKIE GUERRERO): INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
I'd be a lot more stoked about this if the first dozen matches between these two were any good, but they weren't, so I'm not expecting anything here. Vickie Guerrero comes out to break my eardrums, just to make things THAT MUCH BETTER. She introduces Dolph Ziggler.

We start with a lock-up, as Dolph backs Kofi into the corner. Kofi gets a series of roll-ups for 2, as Dolph hits a knee to gut to stop that silliness. Dolph hits the Perfect snapmare for two. We immediately hit the chinlock. Kofi fights out of it, but Dolph takes control again. Armdrag is reversed into a monkey flip. Kofi hits a high dropkick and flying forearm. He misses Trouble In Paradise, as Dolph ducks out. That'll take us to our next ad break.

We come back with Dolph hitting the chinlock again. Dolph breaks it up and hits a dropkick for 2. Jumping elbow gets 2. Dolph goes back to the chinlock, as Cole starts rambling on about The Miz for some reason. Dolph stops a comeback with a swinging neckbreaker for 2. Just in case he hasn't established it yet, Dolph goes to the chinlock again, as the crowd's falling asleep. Dolph goes for another dropkick, but gets caught and catapulted into the turnbuckle. Kofi makes the big comeback with chops and a high dropkick. Dolph dodges the jumping clothesline and slips out of the S.O.S. He can't dodge a clothesline, though. Kofi hits a scoop slam and tries to follow up with the Buzzsaw Legdrop before Dolph crawls away. Corner charge misses, though. Dolph tries for his own corner charge and it runs into Kofi's high kick counter. Kofi follows that up with a missile dropkick. He jaws with Vickie for a bit before covering for 2. Dolph tries to sucker Kofi in with a cradle, but it only gets 2. Kofi runs into a boot and both men are down. Dolph goes for a second-rope superplex and gets headbutted down. Kofi hits the frog crossbody for 2. Kofi goes for a suplex, but Dolph floats over into the Sleeper Hold! Kofi's able to get out of it, but gets shoved shoulder-first into the steel ring post. Dolph moves in, but eats Trouble In Paradise! Kofi covers, but Jack Swagger's out for the DQ.

WINNER: Kofi Kingston by DQ - It's yet another shitty finish for these two. Add it to the pile.

Post-match, Swagger applies the anklelock on the outside. Referees separate the two.

Backstage, Edge implores Kane not to come closer. He claims it's not a dummy this time, which naturally means it is. The wheelchair falls off the scaffolding and it's yet another dummy. Kane screams, presumably because he's as tired of this angle as the rest of us.

Ad break - Raw promo

We come back and...we've stepped in a timewarp, apparently, because it's time for the Masterlock Challenge. That's funny, it doesn't FEEL like 2005. Tonight's contestant is "Dashing" Cody Rhodes.

Cody's instructed to sit in the chair, but who knows where that chair's been? So Cody demands sanitizing wipes. He wipes the chair down and slowly takes a seat. Masters moves in for the Masterlock, but Cody pauses again. He needs to file his nails first and suggests Masters do the same. Masters tosses away the nail file and taps Cody on the face. NOT THE FACE!!! Cody is suitably outraged and gets in Masters' face. Masters responds by grabbing his nose. Cody throws a tantrum and tries to take his business elsewhere, so Masters clamps on the Masterlock anyway. Ref checks the arm and calls for the bell. This segment ends with Cole asking for Hornswoggle and the Eagle to come back.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Cody just beat Masters clean last week in a 2-minute squash? Why is this a feud all of a sudden? Oh, and when I said they need to build someone up on the babyface side, I didn't mean Chris Masters!

Later tonight, Edge and Rey Mysterio face Alberto Del Rio and Kane.

Ad break

We get a video package for SyFy Original Movie "Ice Quake" to burn a quick 30 seconds.

SANTINO MARELLA & VLADIMIR KOZLOV v. CHAVO GUERRERO & DREW McINTYRE: WWE TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
McIntyre's got a look on his face that says "Eh, it's not like I had anything better to do tonight." Surely, Chavo-tyre will end better than The Dashing Ones, right?

We start with Santino and McIntyre. Santino suckers Drew into an armdrag. He gives himself a round of applause before Drew whacks him. Suitably rocked, Santino tags out. Vlad gets an armdrag and shoulder thrusts in the corner. Fireman's carry takeover takes McIntyre down. Vlad hits a belly-to-back suplex, but Drew's still able to back Vlad to his corner. Vlad fights them both off, but celebrates too soon, allowing Chavo to get a cheap shot in from behind. Tag is made to Chavo, who comes in with a senton. He works over Vlad in the corner. Chavo hits the headlock and gets backdropped. Lukewarm tag is made to Santino, as Chavo also tags out. Santino works over McIntyre with lefts and hits an armdrag. He goes for the saluting gorilla press, but Drew gets a foot up. McIntyre tries to finish with the Future Shock, but Chavo blind tags himself in. He wants the frog splash, but it misses. Santino staggers around before hitting THE COBRA~! and rolling up Chavo for the 3.

WINNERS: Santino Marella & Vladimir Kozlov - Short and inoffensive.

Post-match, Drew McIntyre wipes out Chavo with the Future Shock. And thus ends the epic ten-minute run of Chavo-tyre.

Your hosts are Team NXT. They hype up tonight's main event, leading to a recap of tonight's nonsense with Edge and Kane.

Ad break

Raw Rebound wastes even more time, before we get the PPV rundown. It should be noted that Rey Mysterio/Alberto Del Rio is now a Chairs Match, instead of a TLC match, thus making last week's segment where ADR went through the table somewhat of a waste.

LayCool are on their way to the ring. Layla faces Natalya (again) next.

Ad break

LAYLA (w/MICHELLE McCOOL) v. NATALYA (w/BETH PHOENIX): NON-TITLE MATCH
Layla goes on the attack immediately, as she rolls up Natalya for 2. Natalya hits the Davey Boy suplex for 2. Layla ducks out, but Natalya chases and shoves Michelle aside. Layla takes advantage with a dropkick, sending Natalya out. Natalya comes back in and backs Layla into the corner. Corner charge eats boot, though. Double clothesline takes both women down. Layla goes for The Dropkick That's Always Countered Into The Sharpshooter. Go figure, it was countered into the Sharpshooter! That'll end Layla's night in a 4-minute special.

WINNER: Natalya - I'd imagine we're getting a tag team match down the road. Maybe at the PPV?

Up next, tonight's main event.

Ad break

REY MYSTERIO & "THE RATED R SUPERSTAR" EDGE v. ALBERTO DEL RIO & KANE
I love that Ricardo Rodriguez has the full heel facial mannerisms going tonight. Tonight, Alberto Del Rio joins us in a white convertible Mercedes. Kane's pyro hits and there's no Kane. That prompts Teddy Long to join us and make it...

REY MYSTERIO & "THE RATED R SUPERSTAR" EDGE v. ALBERTO DEL RIO: HANDICAP MATCH
Rey starts the match by hammering on ADR and hitting a seated dropkick for 2. Edge tags in and both men double team Del Rio for a bit. Del Rio tries to take control, but gets pancaked. Rey tags in and we get more double teaming. Striker makes my head spin by remembering that Edge and Rey were former tag team champions! Speaking of 2005, indeed. Del Rio charges in and nearly gets the 619 for his troubles. NOW Kane's coming down and Edge meets him halfway. They fight in the aisle and Edge leads Kane away, as both of them disappear to the backstage area. Rey's looking up there confused, but that means his eye's off the ball and Del Rio whacks him from behind. Del Rio stomps away and he whips Rey into the corner with authority! Del Rio hits a fireman's carry gutbuster for 2. Time to hit the body scissors. Rey comes back with some kicks and an enziguiri. He tries to rush Del Rio in the corner, but ADR places Rey on the apron and hits his own enziguiri. Del Rio gathers himself and chases Rey to the outside, hitting a futbol kick. Both men back in the ring and ADR goes for a second-rope superplex. It's blocked and Rey shoves him off. Top-rope seated senton hits. Bulldog hits for 2. Del Rio comes back with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker for 2. Del Rio gets a sunset flip, but that sets up a chain reaction of momentum, as Rey hits a seated senton and gets a dropkick to the back to set up the 619. 619 hits! Top rope splash finishes at 7 minutes and change.

WINNERS: Edge & Rey Mysterio - The start of the match was all angle and once Edge and Kane left, the crowd was just dead.

Post-match, we go backstage to Edge, who has a wheelchair precariously position on top of a ladder. Kane runs in and laughs. He's convinced it's a dummy, which obviously means it isn't. Kane laughs and shoves the ladders over, sending the wheelchair falling down. And oh gee whiz, it really was Paul Bearer this time. Show ends with Kane realizing he may have just committed patricide.

FINAL THOUGHT

Wow, this week's show was truly wretched. This Kane/Edge feud needs to die. Quickly. Move Kane on to Big Show or anyone else, because there's no saving this feud. Perhaps worst of all is that, up to this point, Kane had been successfully built as the demonic, unstoppable monster of a champion and now it's all out the window. It's a wonder how having the supposedly indestructible monster bordering on tears will kill his mystique.

More than anything, we're looking at the ugliness that results from a thin roster. Hornswoggle/Eagle? Masterlock Challenge? I'm hoping it's just a hiccup or end-of-the-year apathy, because I'd hate for this to be the norm now that we've lost MVP, Matt Hardy, Christian, and Undertaker.

They need to move some guys over from RAW or something, because when the roster's so thin you have to rely on Hornswoggle and The Soaring Eagle to put on a match, to say nothing of the dynamic duo of Chavo Guerrero and Drew McIntyre (both of whom I like, by the way, but they've been treated like shit recently), you've got a recipe for disaster.

This is one of the down sides of not having an ECW brand you can shift guys over from anymore. There's no Sheamus waiting in the wings, ready to be brought over to one of the A-shows.

You'd think they could farm out some of the Nexus b-team.

Did Slater/Gabriel ever defend the belts on SD?

This Edge/Kane stuff is just so BAD!!!

Worse than any Wrestlecrap I've seen in a while- maybe since suicidal referee played for laughs.

Edge and Kane are both smarter than this and deserve better than this cartoon junk.

Off-topic---my son brought home a Triple H biography from school. It talks about how HHH and Austin in 2001 took on "a tag team led by Chris Jericho". It's interesting the lengths they will go to so as not to mention Benoit.

He was the only male wrestler to fly overseas for Tribute For The Troops (the rest of the show is being filmed at Ft. Hood, TX), along with 2 of the ladies...Kelly Kelly and someone I'm forgetting. Maybe they're not back in the States yet?

Perhaps they've decided to turn the show into a comedy on the new network?
As for the problem with mid-card faces: It could be argued that the face they've spent the most time focusing on in the past year in the post-Orton/Cena class is Santino. Also, why would someone want to be relegated to being a face when they are blocked at the top and they've seen Miz, Sheamus, Swagger and Barrett get either title reigns or main event multi PPV's as heels who've quickly elevated?

I saw Santino's stunner! It's an acceptable variant!

If we get a triple threat for the IC title at the PPV, the DQ finish is worth it. I support a renewed Swagger push.

Kaval looks good out there.

Their roster isn't the problem (at least not by previous stripped Smackdown standards). They need a writer shakeup. This show has been absolute garbage ever since Kane won the belt and they started flexing their creative muscles.

The Edge and Kane stuff is horrible, but there is some value to the show. I actually enjoyed the Masterlock Challenge - I thought it was a good, classic way to start a feud. It was almost like they put some effort into it, instead of just doing a random run-in or inexplicable heat. Both wrestlers got to showcase their gimmicks, the Masterlock was put over as a dominant hold, and the two actually have a personal reason to go after each other now. It might not be fresh, but if fresh is Edge running around for a month with Paul Bearer dummies, I am not sure I want it.

The Soaring Eagle stuff makes me sad, because he is so good as a valet of Jack Swagger.

The end of the latest Taker/Kane match requires the top face of the roster to go away for a while. But it left them with another gaping hole in a depleted roster. Matt Hardy's gone. MVP's gone. Christian's out. Show is away for a bit.

The official SD roster (wwe.com) lists JTG, Curtis Hawkins, Joey Mercury, Finlay (!), Tyler Reks, and Trent Baretta. That's a handful of guys we don't see at all on SD. (Did Tyler Reks vanish from TV once he filled that SS spot?)

FROSTY!

Reks has been on Superstars... which isn't great because I actually enjoy Superstars, and I don't find myself interested in him at all.

The roster may be thin, but it isn't like they don't have options. They just aren't using them. Rey/Alberto is usually good, but they just crammed them in the Main Event with Kane and Edge. They've still done nothing with Kaitlyn. Hawkins and Baretta are having a decent little feud on Superstars. It's no question that they are thin, but they aren't making a good effort to use what they have.
