Are you guys sure that it's not some sort of spyware that's blocking access to pages? I've seen that happen before.

Before buying something new you can at least try a hard drive format and clean install of Windows. If you don't have the Windows install disks anymore, try Ubuntu or something else that's free and easy to use.

While all of these suggestions sound good and we dd try all of them, the issue still remains that it is happening on the desktop and one laptop school) but not on a third laptop.

From the desktop, I can access my work's email server and google.com, but apparently nothing else. My son's school computer is similar. On this laptop that I am typing on, everything is fine. This laptop has no Norton installed where the desktop does and that seems to be the only difference.

I also fear that we might buy a new processor and have the same issue with the desktop, too!

I am at my wit's end about this and my wife is even more so!

Have you called Fairpoint back and asked them for help? If them putting in a new modem is what was the start of this, they should help fix it.

We did and they were somewhat helpful and checked that we had an internet connection but it wasn't an issue on their end.

Okay, in doing a search on your very problem ("can only access google"), one of the solutions suggested was adjusting the MTU settings on your router/modem. The suggestion I read stated that setting it from 1500 to 1492 solved the issue.

The makes no sense to me as to why *this*, of all things, would be an issue, but I've read a few places that changing this setting solved the "can only access google.com" problem.

You'll need to log into your modem/router and find this setting. If you provide the make/model, I could probably guide you though it. For my Linksys, it on the first page that loads.

Edit: That reminds me - one thing no one asked you is whether or not you could ping your router from the troubled machines.

The reason for setting the MTU from 1500 to 1492 would be because PPP-over-Ethernet (PPPoE) uses 8 bytes of space in the frame.

PPPoE is used by ISPs to enforce a "login" of sorts between the customer premises equipment (CPE) and the ISP's equipment. Normally this would be set automatically in the router/modem that they gave you, but if you're using your own device, like a Linksys or a D-Link or whatever, it could be the problem. It certainly would not explain why the laptop that's working is working correctly unless that laptop is configured to use dial-up networking to create its own PPPoE session instead of using the one provided by the router.

Definitely worth checking.

So why does going to Google.com work? Shouldn't all traffic be impacted?

The PPPoE session is up, something's just not correctly configured, most likely leading to packet assembly / disassembly which is causing the "sit and spin".

Google, among other sites, plays some games, both "legal" and "illegal" when it comes to making sure their sites are as fast as possible. One of the things Google does is have their servers advertise a Maximum Segment Size (MSS) of 1460. This is well below the 1492 limit for the PPPoE session. Actually, it's probably more complicated than that, but it might explain why Google works but other things don't.

You can read about what Google does to make everything faster here.

Okay, you guys are all talking Chinese now!

Anyhow, it's a Clear Access Model AG10W that is a modem/wireless combination if that makes any sense.

Every post tarnish makes in this forum makes me want to throw my Bachelor's in Music Composition in the trash. :)

I'm willing to bet this modem is old.

If you go back to that msdos prompt, and type in ipconfig /all. Look for the IP address under "default gateway". It should be something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. You'll want to type that in a Firefox or Explorer to access the router.

I can't find a reference to the default user name and password online, but typically these are either written on the unit itself, or the username is 'admin' and the password is 'password' or also 'admin'. You might have to call your ISP and tell them you need this info.

Got the address, but those user name/passwords don't work. That address got hung up on the desktop and worked on this laptop.

Tell it to say, "Hi!" to my B.A. in Philosophy ;)

Pieman: the fact that the desktop is having trouble talking to the modem/router isn't good. That implies that the MTU thing isn't the problem because it shouldn't be affecting traffic that's not leaving your network.

That said, all of the signs so far do seem to point to an issue with the desktop's networking, especially with a "new" modem on the scene.

Does the desktop use wireless or wired? Was it using wired or wireless in the old setup? Any chance you've got a bad cable there? Do you have something you click to connect to the internet on any of your systems?

I'm out for the night, but will check back on this thread tomorrow.

We've changed out the cables to no effect.

I have two sons and they each have a school laptop and one works and one has the same issue as the desktop. So, we are two for four in household computer workability right now.

So how do I change this setting. I cannot figure out a way to do that.

Have you gotten to the point of being logged in to the router? (Leroy's last post). I know you said that admin:admin didn't work for the username and password. If you haven't gotten that to work yet, you're going to have to call Fairpoint and get the login information from them.

If you've already called them and gotten logged in, then I'll admit I found a link that details the router in question at http://www.relianceconnects.com/guides/clearaccesscontrolpanelguide.pdf and sadly changing the MTU settings is not one of the things listed. This doesn't mean that it's not in there. It might be somewhere in the Gateway Settings.

I'm kind of leaning towards getting your ISP to replace this router/modem with something a little more contemporary. Finding docs on it was WAY more difficult than it needed to be, and ClearAccess doesn't even list this modem on their website. Did they include a manual with this?

If you have your old wireless router laying around, there might be a way to plug that into the AG10W and try to connect to that, but that seems a bit ridiculous given that the AG10W's purpose is to NOT need an additional wireless router. Unfortunately, I don't think it will be a easy as plugging it in and connecting to the internet (but it might be). It could be worth a shot.

You might want to change the MTU settings on the machines themselves. I found this link. Unfortunately, I'm a bit swamped today, so I can't read through this until this evening.

Edit: And by "this link", I meant this link (help.expedient.com). Some further thought on this, however - I would do this as a last resort. I think trying to get your ISP to replace this with a different unit is ideal, secondarily plugging in a wireless router into the AG10W.

I called my ISP and waited on hold for a really long time and got impatient. So I sent them an email detailing all the work you folks had done on my behalf and what you all said they should do. They called back and left me a message saying they had "adjusted the modem from their end" and voila, everything works again. So, thank you all for the wonderful assistance and having your details really made it seem like I knew what I was talking about with them. Once again, this community helps me out of a computer jam. I really do appreciate it, gentlemen!

I don't know if this plug in will work on the Windows version of Safari, but Inquisitor (inquisitorx.com) is one of the best plug-ins ever both in terms of look and functionality, and is the only thing that makes me ever use Safari over FF on my G4.
