So, there are a lot of teams hanging around after 11 games that I didn't expect to be in contention. All season, I've been waiting for the Bucs, Chiefs and Bears to fade away, but they're still there. Do people think they're for real yet?

I think the Bears are. That defense is playing great. I think they will win their division.

I don't think the Bucs are going to make the playoffs, but I think they have a lot to be excited about. Josh Freeman looks like a guy with a great future and Raheem Morris, for now, has made anyone who thought he should be fired after one season shut up.

The Chiefs, I haven't really seen a single game of theirs, so I don't know. Oakland looks to be settling into third, so it's a two team race probably, and the Chargers are getting hot...

Which brings me to my next question, the Indianapolis Colts. Is it OK to say they don't look very good? Can I say that about a team with Peyton Manning on it? I mean, I wouldn't be shocked if this team didn't win that division, even as weak as it is. I definitely do not consider them to be a Super Bowl contender.

I have no guess who is going to win the NFC West. Only Arizona looks totally incapable of winning it, from what I've seen. A win by them tonight would probably knock the 49ers out of it, though.

At this point, here are my preseason predictions:

Philly, Green Bay, Chicago, Atlanta, New Orleans, and the NFC West champ in the NFC playoffs

Jets, Pats, Colts, Ravens, Steelers, Chargers in the AFC playoffs

Eagles over Ravens in the Super Bowl. The Ravens look scary good to me, but Mike Vick looks like a man on a mission, and I'm really impressed with LeSean McCoy.

My preseason prediction was Packers over Jets, but I think Philly and Balty look like the best teams in their conferences.

For some reason I think the Packers or Colts or Chargers are going to be outside looking in. The Bills continue to die hard in every game they are in. I still don't believe in the Bears due to Cutler being the QB. The Bears just seemed to scout Philly's offense very well and without Asante Samuels, Philly's D is just average. I believe in the Falcons though. Two huge games next week in the AFC, Ravens/Steelers and Jets/Pats.

I'm convinced that this comment (The W) is solely responsible for the Bears beating the Eagles. I'm worried yesterday's loss could wind up being the tie breaker that keeps the Eagles on the outside looking in, unless they can win the division. That said, with Vick, the Eagles are always good for at least 25 points, so the D just needs to step up and start clamping down. As much as I'm not impressed by Samuel's tackling, lotjx is exactly right that he was missed last night.

The Colts are insanely lucky that as weak as they are, the rest of the AFC South is just as weak. I'd think Jacksonville might actually have a chance if they could play consistently.

This season is so tight. I feel like every playoff spot is going to be up for grabs in week 17.

You believe me, don't you?
Please believe what I just said...

I would lose my mind if the Pack missed the playoffs due to that awful, shitty, self-inflicted loss to Chicago in Week 3, but I suspect the NFC Central will come down to the rematch in Green Bay in Week 17.

Green Bay has road games left in Detroit and New England, and are home against Chicago, San Fran and the Giants. I favour them in all but the Patriots matchup. The Bears have a tougher remaining schedule (at home against the Pats and Jets, on the road against Green Bay, Detroit and possibly revived Minnesota) but as of today have a one-game cushion on the Packers plus the head-to-head tiebreaker.

I've heard this game characterized this way a lot of times now, which diminishes the win on the Chicago side. Not always when a team commits penalties are they the awful, self-inflicted kind, but due to being forced. Sure, the bonehead personal fouls and such penalties are correctly grouped here, but a lot of times a team will commit a penalty because the other team is forcing them to decide between that and a big play.

If a pass interference foul is called because the defender is out of position or doesn't know where the ball is, that's one thing, but tackling a receiver so that he doesn't make an 80-yard TD reception and hoping the official doesn't notice is something that the other team forces. Same with a hold; I'd much rather get a 10-yard penalty by holding a defender if the alternative is my QB getting flattened.

James Jones fumbling the ball on the Packers' presumptive field goal drive (and also costing the Packers a key timeout on the bad challenge) was pretty awful, shitty, and self-inflicted.

IIRC, Jones' fumble was Urlacher-inflicted.

As a Colts fan, I'd say that's definitely safe to say. The Pacers have given me more cause for celebration over the past couple weeks than the Colts have.

The Colts have been devastated by injury to a serious degree. Peyton's doing his best to hold them together, and you've gotta give the backup guys credit for being ready. Tamme, in particular, has been impressive.

But we've got issues, and we've got to get our act together if we're even going to make the playoffs. Winning the Super Bowl would be miraculous. (But I do believe in miracles.)

What's the reasoning behind this? Arizona would have four games left to make up four wins to pull ahead. Would the St Louis losses help someone else, like Seattle?

The 49ers are 4-7. If the Seahawks and Rams lose-out (except for the finale, where they play each other), that would give the 49ers two more wins, so your best case scenario for the Cardinals in the NFC West headed into the final week would be...

ARI 6-9 (3-8 plus L-STL, W-DEN, W-CAR, W-DAL)
SFO 6-9 (4-7 plus L-GB, W-SEA, L-SD, W-STL)
STL 6-9 (5-6 plus W-ARI, L-NO, L-KC, L-SF)
SEA 5-10 (5-6 plus L-CAR, L-SF, L-ATL, L-TB)

...and if THAT"s the case, and Arizona win over San Francisco PLUS a Seattle win over St. Louis would leave the Cards as the only 7-9 team in the NFC West. So they're no QUITE dead with a loss to the Rams, but the pulse would be VERY feint.

I was looking at the wildcard and totally forgot about how weak the NFC West is and forgot that they could be eliminated from the WC, but still win the div.

According to this NFL Playoff Scenario Blog, Cleveland is out with a loss and a MIA/PIT tie. So, like, keep an eye out for that.

Also, MIN is out with either
- LOSS + CHI win/tie + GB win + NO win/tie
- LOSS + CHI win/tie + GB win + TB win/tie

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

The Bucs need a win this weekend against Atlanta if we're going to have real playoff hopes. Raheem's been talking up the "race to 10" all year, but given that the NFC West is going to suck up a playoff spot with a 8-8 or 7-9 record at best (and I'm going to be pissed if that team is St. Louis), it's probably going to take 11 to make it - and that's assuming we win all the "should win" games against Washington, Detroit and Seattle. I'm in T5 at JFK waiting for my flight down, and hoping that Creamsicle Power works its magic much like it did against Green Bay last year.

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.
