http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/college/2010/11/29/2010-11-29_texas_christian_universitys_horned_frogs_invited_into_the_big_east_source.html

There will be a press conference in Fort Worth at 1 pm CT today to announce the move.

Assuming they can figure out a positive solution to the basketball situation, I think this is a great move for the Big East. But I feel really bad for the Mountain West, in particular Boise State. The Broncos made that move hoping to compete with three other traditional powers in the league, and now all three of them are leaving. I feel bad, but I also think it's hilarious.

Now the Big East is still probably going to look for one more team, because the initial decision by the league was to expand to 10. I don't care who the other school is, but I really don't want it to be UCF.

A 17 team basketball conference is ridiculous. I wonder if one of the lower ranked basketball-only schools that are not doing well in the conference (DePaul!) will be cut loose to get back down to 16.

Is there any way Boise can get out of the move? Cause you'd have to think they are going to try now.

I think it'll be really interesting to see what TCU can do in the Big East. Not sure it's a great fit, but worth a shot.

Do you not want UCF because they look like they'll be pretty good the next few years? I think they'd be perfect.

I know this probably means about as much as Nick Saban saying he's the Dolphins head coach, but the Big East brass have repeatedly said this isn't the route they are going.

I don't really have a big problem with it. I don't think 17 is really much more absurd than 16, both create imbalanced schedules. Right now, every Big East team plays every other team at least once, but they play three teams twice, on a rotating basis. It will be something pretty similar with 17. The only problem I see is the conference tournament, but whatever kind of bye system they come up with will be fine I'm sure.

I understand why UCF would be a good fit for the league. I just really, really can't stand their fans. They're 2-36 (or something like that) all time against BCS conference teams, and have never beaten one with a winning record. In 30 years of football, they've accomplished nothing. But their fans have such an inferiority complex that they just talk endless shit anyway.

Obviously that's a really over the top generalization, I'm sure every UCF fan isn't like that. But there are enough to make me want to avoid them. UCF and USF played four games home and home from 2005 to 2008, and they brought some of the most annoying fans I've ever dealt with to Tampa.

EDIT: I'm also sure there are Florida, Florida State and/or Miami fans who would say the same about USF fans. It's all relative. :) But at least USF can now claim to have beaten two of those three.

This only helps the Big East and sets in motion more talk about the Super-Conferences for the year 2011. If I were Boise State, I would see if they could go to the Big 12 or just join the Pac-10. TCU has caved to the cartel.

The Pac-12 don't want them.

I could see Houston and Boise State in the Big 12.

The 10th spot belongs to Villanova, if they want to move up from FCS, the spot is theirs for the taking. If they don't want to move (maybe a 50-50 chance of this, their stadium situation may take some working out), and Notre Dame doesn't want to join the Big East for football (a 100% chance of this), then they'll look for someone else to come in as an all-sport member, to get them to 18 for basketball (which is WAY too big, but that's a conversation for another thread). I've heard Memphis mentioned in the past. If Georgetown was ever interested in giving out football scholarships, and being something other than middle-of-the-Patriot-League dreck, they'd probably get an invite to join for football, if 'Nova passed.

The Big East gave Villanova until the end of the year to make a decision, and it's getting close. The stuff I've read about it suggests Villanova is researching the move and won't be ready to make a decision by then, so who knows what the Big East will do. I think if a team they think adds value comes along, they snatch them up and tell Nova they were too late, other wise they just stick with nine football teams until Villanova is ready to make the jump (if they even do).

I can't find a single article talking about it, but it was just announced on Sportscenter that Josh McDaniels has been fired. Apparently the spying incident was the straw that broke the camel's back. EDIT: Well, I finally found a mention of it in print....
