I think comparing Miz to Flair and HBK is a bit much. He is a good worker and if we are just comparing his built to Shawn's built that is ok. Yet, he is not in the league of Shawn and Ric, I am sure Miz out of kayfabe would say the same thing. I just would like to remind everyone that it wasn't a few months ago that people around here were claiming Nexus to be the greatest storyline since Austin/McMahon and that really hasn't happened yet or ever will.
We shouldn't build Miz up to be the greatest heel champion of all time or in league with legends until he has at least gotten his sea legs as champ. The picture with him in the title is gold though, might be my new facebook profile just to piss of some friends who hate him. He needs to have good matches and be able to tell a story in and outside the ring. He has got the mic work down and can be good in the ring. If all we know he can come out Monday botch his promo and match, get no heel heat and the ratings drop a point. I am just urging caution considering chicken shit champions with his build don't do well. After a month or two people get sick of it and just stop caring.
I don't think anyone's saying he's in the same league as HBK or Flair, but he's very, very good at one half of this gig and he's improving in leaps and bounds at the other half.
I think optimism is warrented, totally. Miz is great, the best choice for a new heel champ since maybe Edge's first win, and look how well that's turned out. Ditto on the Nexus front - they've dropped a lot of balls on that one, but at the end of the day a program which everyone thought was a failure has produced a good-to-great heel stable and a genuine main event talent.
It's fun to see you preaching extreme caution in this thread, given your boundless hope for the future in the face of all logic concerning another professional wrestling organisation. But I shall say no more as I don't want to derail.

I'm skimming Bill Simmons' latest ESPN chat and found this:
Can we officially call The Miz the biggest star to ever come out of the Real World/Road Rules/Inferno era after he won the WWE Title last night?
Bill Simmons (1:26 PM) It's an incredible story - here's a kid who went on the "Real World," called himself "The Miz," did fake wrestling promos, fake-wrestled people in the house and openly dreamed of being a WWE wrestler and now he's the champ. Isn't this a sports movie or am I crazy?
(and I know someone quoted a Tweet from him earlier where he said something similar and shorter...)

Eh. Whenever The Undertaker and Kane aren't trying to kill each other, they're usually beating people up together. Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage's friend/foe status changed at least five times that I can think of just off the top of my head. And don't even get me started about Matt Hardy's "my bad!" to Jeff Hardy.

I showed the animated GIF to a non-wrestling fan, and they brought up a good point that (frankly) never occurred to me ... It's possible that the little girl wasn't necessarily scowling about Orton's loss, but rather she had been dragged to the event by her wrestling-fan parents and - because of the non stop bright colors and loud music over a two hour period - she was just scowling throughout the entire show.
It's possible.

I thought they were just trying to recapture the magic that they thought they had with Bobby Lashley.
The WWE might be the last ones to realize that the overly jacked up wrestler is no longer in style, although lesser jacked up (Cena, Sheamus, HHH) is still okay.

It's possible, but I don't think there are many older fans with non-fan kids bringing them to these things. I didn't see a single kid at a house show that wasn't acting like it was their personal birthday party. The parents were uniformly bored however, some vocal about how they hated the loud noises. If parents REALLY wanted to go and they had a kid that didn't like wrestling, they would get a sitter I hope. Especially considering that the sitter would cost less than her ticket.
The kids was also being comforted by a father or something too, so was probably just pissed her hero lost.

If Justin Bieber, who came up through youtube, wins the grammy for record of the year or album of the year, or something that is considered extremely prestigious, you'd probably hear some grumbling from people that came up through traditional channels. ...
Interesting point, HMD, but, to counter: Was there grumbling from people who came up through "traditional channels" when Carrie Underwood starting winning Grammys and awards?
The answer to THAT, my friend, depends I suppose on whether you consider this unprofessional Faith Hill outburst to be a joke.
But I take your larger point. I just think Nash is arguing from the perspective of his generation where he doesn't "believe" in putting the title on someone who doesn't look like he can kick any kind of ass at all. I've made the same argument about Flair being overrated, and been shouted down for it: flopping around, irrationally transitioning, and having no credible offense do not a great Champion make. That being said, even Jim Ross on the radio recently has compared Miz to Flair in that same vein, as in not being a "physically imposing figure" but being able to "talk his way into a heated position", and I wouldn't argue with that.
After reviewing the last 20 minutes or so of RAW again, something struck me as interesting;
The Miz twice tried to cash in the briefcase already. The first time R-Truth put a stop to it. The second time? Randy Orton. So essentially Orton cost Miz his chance then, only to lose the title in the future to the Miz and the very same briefcase.
After a (very) long hiatus, I have begun to write again. And this time, I'm not alone!

^^Not to get too far OT, but Flair wasn't really physically unimposing during his prime. He was an average size wrestler. He wasn't strikingly less imposing than Race, Rhodes, Steamboat, Windham, Magnum, etc.
Yes, he would be less imposing than Batista, HHH, and most of the guys today - but that's more or less the evolution of sport. Dr. J would be small (build wise) by today's NBA standards. Hogan was a bit of an anomaly in that he was a big guy who had the world title during that era. Most other champions were normal size guys.
As for Miz - great for him! I'll echo sentiments I've read earlier in this thread and merely state that I don't trust WWE to handle his first reign any better than they did Sheamus, Punk, or Swagger, but I have become a Miz fan because it's obvious he cares.
Brian Kendrick gets a SD contract by beating Shannon Moore. Rey-Rey and Matt get involved. Does this mean a triple threat for the CW title at WM? That would make 3 triple threat title matches, and a possible fourth one on the way.
