Mercury very publicly credited Vince McMahon for saving his life with the rehab provided by the WWE. That probably bought him enough good will to keep him around for a few years.

    Goodbye Archer, hello Hawkins?

Hawkins and Archer had already broken up as a tag team. Given the right material, I think Hawkins could absolutely make it as a singles star. Unfortunately, he's in the WWE, which hasn't had anything resembling creativity in many, many years.

Jillian Hall outlived her usefulness LONG ago. I'm really not sorry to see her go and am relieved I won't have to endure her stupid gimmick anymore.

Lance Storm has repeatedly asserted that Jillian Hall is a very good wrestler who wasn't allowed to show it in the ring. I'd very much like to see her go to TNA and prove him right.

Really? JTG won their only PPV singles match and Shad got his win back on Superstars. Didn't he only wrestle like one other match and cut a promo (while wearing a nice suit) before getting shuttled off to FCW?

JTG at least got a singles victory over Chris Jericho (granted, while Cryme Tyme was still a team) and has been involved with a couple of crappy mini-feuds (that he lost) on Superstars. I'd say JTG definitely got the bigger singles push of the two.

What surprises me is that Cryme Tyme never became tag team champions. They were far better as a team than I ever would have expected based on their original introduction videos.

I am not surprised by any one on this list; as soon as SES was done, so was Gallows' career in the WWE. And as for Shad, I won't be surprised to see his former partner in crime (pun intended) to join him on the "future endeavored" list. I can see almost anyone who has been in a tag team that has split to be joining this list.

The WWE has really crapped all over the tag team division and the lesson here? Maybe don't start out in a tag team when you first join the WWE because tag teams don't last (whether they are a good or legit tag team or not). The Hart Dynasty is at an end and despite both Smith and Kidd having lineage in the industry, they probably won't last too long on their own. After the Hart Dynasty, maybe the Usos and after that, well, why bother having a tag division in the first place.

Unfortunately, the wrestlers don't really have a lot of control over that, so I'm not sure that lesson would get through

To an extent, they do. Bret Hart was originally offered the cowboy gimmick that went to Bob Orton and convinced Vince to put him in a tag team with Jim Neidhart instead.

More recently, Elijah Burke was originally offered a spot in the Spirit Squad but turned it down. As a result, he sat in developmental for another six months before being called up to the main roster. Yes, he's no longer with the company but I think he still came out a whole lot better off than 4/5 of the Spirit Squad.

First, the Bret example is from YEARS ago, and the creative system has changed so much. Something tells me the wrestlers don't get that freedom anymore. Secondly, I think there's a difference between being in a stable as opposed to a tag team, as you brought up with the Burke example. Not saying no one is given the option, but in general, I don't think it happens for a Caylen Croft or a Trent Baretta.

Good point, but what I should have said was that "good luck if you start out in a tag team; because once that ends, so will your career with the WWE".

Remember when tag teams helped elevate certain people into their singles careers or actually kept them relevant in the WWE picture? Those days are long gone.

Off the top of my head the last singles stars to come out of a Tag Team are Edge and Christian and The Hardys

It still happens occasionally, just not as often. Miz and Morrison would be the most recent high-profile case, though with Miz being the breakout guy instead of Morrison as most people expected. While it's too early to judge, Cody Rhodes is doing well with his Dashing gimmick after the Legacy breakup, so there's that too.

You can tell the difference in the tag teams and how they're treated, of course. Miz and Morrison were pushed heavily as a team and were all over both shows as the champs. Legacy actually main-evented a PPV last year. Teams like the Hart Dynasty and Cryme Tyme didn't get pushed that hard, so it's understandable that their singles pushes after their breakup won't be as major. People shouldn't forget that there still are those recent, high-profile tag teams, and there's no reason that another one won't pop up down the road. There always seems to be one or two who come out of nowhere.

A Jingle With Jillian is one of the greatest things WWE ever did- it's a Christmas staple in the Moss house.

All probably wise decisions, aside from the "why fire one member of a team and keep the other" thing. But I wouldn't be overly surprised if there were a few more to come. The mass releases usually occur over the course of two or three days.

I actually had to look up the Spirit Squad after your 4/5's comment. I'm actually pretty shocked, Dolph Ziggler huh?

Well, the smart ones should have learned by now that if they hear one person is going, turn off the phone and hope maybe they forget to call back.

The thing with Bret Hart was that, IIRC, when Stu sold Stampede wrestling to Vince and the WWF, he did it with the caveat that Bret wouldn't be treated just like any other wrestler. Sort of the same thing that happened with Jack Tunney and Gorilla Monsoon when they sold their territories; they got noticeable positions in the WWF as a thanks from Vince for buying into the promotion instead of fighting it like the AWA or WCW did, for example. That gave him some clout that I don't think he would have these days. If Bret Hart was just starting up in the present day, he would probably still become a star in the WWE, but I highly doubt he would have the backstage power he had back in the 80's and 90's.
