I have a 1 TB external hard drive connected to my MacBook Pro through a USB port. I can see the drive in System Profiler and Disk Utility, but it is not mounting and showing up on the desktop. I tried it on my PC and it is showing up fine.
So, what do I do? Is Disk Warrior useful in this case? I didn't want to drop $100 on it if it wasn't (and I missed their Tech Support closing by ten minutes.)

This might be something simple, as it looks like the drive is mounting, it's just not "noticeably" mounting. You may want to check some settings. From the pull down menu across the top of the screen:
There show be a list of items under Show these items in the sidebar. Is there check mark next to External disks?
Under Finder -> Preferences
Under Show these items on the Desktop
Again, there should be a check mark next to External disks (assuming you want it on the Desktop - I prefer not to have too many things on my Desktop, but that's my preference).
Especially on shared systems, these settings can be accidentally changed. It's not common, but, as someone who manages a network with plenty of Mac users, it has happened.

I tried all that. It's not that. Plus, I have another external hard drive that is connected through a firewire cable that shows up, so I know it isn't preference I switched off.

This sounds a lot like this (Firewire drive works, USB doesn't - it was a permissions issue).
You could try running "Check Permissions" in Disk Utility. You might have to work in the terminal to solve it, though. (Sorry, I'm being quick do to intermittent internet access due to a lightening storm.)
Can you open Utilities/Terminal and run "ls -l /Volumes" (without the quotes) and post the results (with both the Firewire drive and the USB drive plugged in)?
Assuming you don't have anything in the DVD/CD drive, you should have three lines that look something like this (I only have two lines because I only have one external drive plugged in at the moment):
drwxrwxr-x 12 leroy leroy 476 Oct 11 21:03 DOMHD lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 1 Oct 15 18:14 Macintosh HD -> /
This will, at least, tell us if the OS is seeing the drive beyond the Disk Utility, as well as the permissions.
Oh, and can I assume it's a G4 and running 10.4.x (just in case that's an issue)?
It's a MacBook Pro running 10.4.11. I certainly got an unexpected result.

Oh, boy. So I'm almost wondering if something is up with your USB connection - either a driver (ehh) or a physical issue (more likely). I'm assuming that you have the same problem regardless of the port (MBP should have more than one USB port)?
So you have a flash drive or some other USB drive you could try and if we get a similar result? (Preferable a larger flash drive.)
And just for giggles, what's the output of df -h (in Terminal) with the USB drive plugged in?
(If you want to take any of this to PM or email, that's fine with me.)

Crazy - every time it (re)mounts, it creates a brand new mount point and those old ones have never disappeared since...well, first mount is dated 11/2009. Hey, look, last time it worked was earlier this afternoon.
(Like, normally it would wants to create and use a mount point at /Volumes/G FORCE, except that when that path already existed, it mounted on /Volumes/G FORCE 1 - and then, next time, because /Volumes/G FORCE 1 existed, it would have to mount on /Volumes/G FORCE 2, and so on and so on until you must have hit a limit at 99?). ANYWAY. You've used up 100 mount points and it doesn't know how to go any further? I didn't know this about MacOS. :) (Of course, I've never seen more than a "2" at the end of MY mount points, either...)
SO: I would suggest you rename/move/delete all those "G FORCE" directories (`rmdir` 'em if they're empty is my suggestion), and it'll magically show up next time you attach it. Like Leroy says, `df -h` should show you the mount point.
EDIT: If all that makes you really uncomfortable, an alternate way to get around all these mount points would be to change the name of the drive - so you could mount the drive on some other Mac, rename it from "G FORCE" to something else, and it'll probably mount just fine on your original Mac. (If I knew how to rename a drive on a PC I could tell you to do that, but I have no idea how that works when Windows is busy assigning it a letter and all that - but maybe you do?)

The drive refuses to mount in any USB port. I plugged in my iPhone to the same USB port and it connected fine.
And I tried "rmdir /Volumes/G FORCE 98" and I got a bunch of "No such file or directory" feedback, but I'm probably keying it in wrong. I can't seem to rename the drive using Disk Utility.

Is the drive formatted for Windows (FAT16 or FAT32) perhaps?
The first time I plugged my MP3 player into my Macbook it was fine, but I accidentally unplugged it without unmounting it and it stopped mounting correctly. I had to clear it off and reformat it in order to get my Mac to mount it again.
If it's Windows-formatted, do you have a Windows box handy you could plug it into to see whether it's the filesystem?
Edit: oh wait, you already said it's working fine on your PC. This tells me it's Windows-formatted. You're probably going to have to peel everything off it onto your PC, reformat it, and then copy everything back onto it. Hope you have the space!

OS X will actually format a drive to FAT16 or FAT32. It's the NTFS and EXT2/3 (and all those other) file systems that don't always work properly.

You're not "root:admin", so I'm not sure rmdir [volume name] will work unless you ran it under root (you'd have to enable sudo, which I wouldn't do right away). It shouldn't be mounting under that user:group, though (your firewire drive is mounting as jason:jason and my usb mounts a bryan:staff)... so I'm back to leaning towards a permissions problem.
Try this: Use Finder's "Go" menu and choosing the "Go to folder" menu item, then typing in the path "/Volumes" (without the quotes) in the dialog that comes up, then trashing the folders. Just make sure to trash ONLY the G FORCE XX folders.
I'd still like to see what happens if you plug in a different drive (not your iPhone/iPod) to the USB port.
Edit: If you get a "Permission Denied" error when attempting to trash those folders, ctrl-click the folder, bring up the "info" box, and see if you can change the owner to "jason" that way. You'll probably have to enter in your password to do it. Again, just make sure your ONLY doing this to the G FORCE XX folders.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner! That is exactly what I needed to do, apparently.
Thanks a million for your much-needed insight.

Awesome!. Glad it worked.
If you haven't already, you might want to run "Fix Permissions" on your laptop's hard drive. Or maybe even try to "Get Info" on the successfully mounted USB drive and see if you can change the owner that way.
Worst case, you have to repeat this process every year or so, which, given the age of the machine and the version of the OS you're running, may be the path of least resistance.
