I actually caught this last night, which is a rarity for me these days. I don't actually catch SNL live too much and was pleasantly surprised to see Jane Lynch hosting. After last night, I came away with a few thoughts...

-If any show (ANY show) is rife for the mocking, it's Glee. And this is coming from a big fan of the show. Having a Glee sketch with Jane Lynch herself there should have been an easy home run. So imagine how disappointed I was when it turned out to be just awful.

-The New Boyfriend Show was one of my favorite sketches of the night, for this simple reason. Amongst the myriad of boyfriends that they kept listing off, when they included Magic Johnson (played by Keenan, of course), they didn't hammer in the obvious joke. They let the audience figure it out for themselves! Subtlety in comedy is alive and well. Huzzah!

-Not the best SNL Digital Short, but still funny. Though that payoff got a big "YEESH!" out of me.

-Holy hell, that Denzel Washington impression was just uncanny! Is Jay Pharaoh always this good, because he's going to quickly turn into my favorite cast member at this rate.

We're flying a giant orange "CONAN" blimp over the baseball playoffs. Finally, subtlety in advertising.

I'm totally a mark for Pharaoh, but my fear is now that he's done his Will Smith and his Denzel...what now? Not that he doesn't have more impressions, but those are the high points and I hope it's not all downhill from here.

An average, blah episode other than that.

His Obama is just as good, but for whatever reason, SNL is choosing to stick with a white guy who no one likes in the role. I don't understand that one.

My guess on why they're sticking with Armisen as Obama is that they don't want the satire of their political sketches overshadowed by the impression itself. I also remember reading somewhere about how in '88 Franken and Carvey were invested in who'd get to play the next president, and it's always been seen as a big deal to be the guy who is the POTUS on SNL, so maybe Lorne doesn't want to give the honor to a rookie. That's all guessing, though.

As far as what they should do with him, if they want to showcase his impressions, give him a "Joe Pesci Show"-style recurring bit as Denzel or Will Smith or whoever, rather than forcing it. He's clearly gifted at impressions, but that was a little too MadTV.

If the thought is that they're going to use him mainly for impressions, I don't think it'll work and he'll be gone within two years. Even if they were to let him play Obama, how many other relevant people could he do from week-to-week? The way to go with it would be to use him as they do the rest of the featured players, letting him write and develop characters, with a recurring bit to showcase his talents, and use his other impressions when there is a reason to.

Darrell Hammond had the longest run ever on the show, and that's pretty much all he did.

Well, he could try being "funny" instead of just "accurate".

Darrell Hammond did 107 different impressions. I'm not saying that there's no place for it, or that he's not going to be good. The problem with planning on having him be young black Darrell Hammond is that it limits what he can do without it being forced. If they can work in a drop-in on Update every couple of weeks, maybe a relevant sketch once in a while, and Obama, that could work, I guess. But I'd like to see him do an impression in something funny before I'd hand the Obama role to him. I'm not familiar enough with his other work to know whether he's funny or just a very talented vocal mimic, but so far I've been disappointed after hearing so many people gushing about him after he joined the cast. It would be a shame if he didn't get the opportunity to blossom the way other cast members do because they went all-in with him as Frank Caliendo Jr.

Darrell Hammond was topical, for the most part.

The sketch with Pharaoh last night was akin to an improv troupe pulling a scenario out of an audience member's cap. It was a contrived, dumb premise that was only set up to show off a good impression. It was MadTV quality.

I'm not feeling this season so far. Too much Wiig. Forte is sorely missed. I'm definitely pulling for Nasim though. She's been great. Can't remember the last time a featured player had a cold open all to themselves.

The problem with Darrell Hammond's impressions is that of those 107, maybe only about half were accurate or funny. The man could nail Clinton, but what was funny about his Donald Trump?

I thought the Will Smith segment in week 1 was funny, but Denzel was more academic exercise than skit. Okay, alright.

A dire episode, anyway. "Glee + Gilly = new Holocaust for the 21st century" is what I wrote, on the internet, without hyperbole.

No Miley Cyrus talk show, that's not pretty cool at all.

I hope the rest of the show was better than the Sunday Night Football Song sketch they showed on Sunday Night Football. Though it was probably better when people weren't playing mock-offended.

Read it and weep, fella

I think Andy Samburg was in every single segment but a couple this week? Weird.

The Sunday Night Football song premise was good, but the actual skit was eh.

I concur with everything that's been said re: Denzel sketch and the actor who played him. His herky-jerky facial expressions were weird though.

I don't watch Glee so I'm not too familiar with the characters, but l liked what I saw in the minute or so until Gilly showed up. As soon as I saw her, I grabbed the remote and ffwd to the next segment. I don't think I've ever done that before. I really hate Gilly.

Maybe I'm just super-biased, but I think making jokes about someone's HIV Is tasteless and offensive. I liked the Boyfriend Show skit until it went there (FULL DISCLOSURE: I'm also bothered by Magic Johnson interviews where he makes light/reminiscences fondly about how many ladies he nailed in the 90's).

On that note, it is absolutely amazing that Magic is still with us nearly two decades after he announced he was HIV positive. Being a big dude helps.

I always jokingly refer to him as the world's fattest AIDS victim. Thank God too, because there wasn't a bigger fan of Magic when he was playing than me.

I liked this show, and thought it was much better than last week's surprisingly disappointing Kranston episode. Maybe I am weird, but I thought the Denzel impression was much funnier and better than Will Smith a few weeks ago.

Are you saying that Phil Hartman was on the show longer than Darrell Hammond, or that Hammond played Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer?

I wish I still got TSN Radio here in Fresno. My two options are Fox Sports and ESPN, and ESPN is still the better of the two most of the time. My ESPN affiliate also dedicates a lot of time (it seems)
