So on Tuesday, the New York Post published this article citing unnamed sources who said the Big East was formulating a plan to invite TCU to join the conference as its ninth football member (and 17th basketball school). I didn't pay the report much attention, because it seems like it would be SUCH a huge get for the league that it couldn't happen. TCU seems like a lock for a BCS conference invite whenever the next big wave of expansion hits, and I figured they would rather wait to here from the Big XII or the Pac-10.

But then today, NBC Sports reported that TCU and Big East officials have already met discussing the logistics of such a move. The report doesn't say it's a done deal or even that it is likely, only that the two sides have met.

I doubt this is actually going to happen. But I really hope it does. It seems like a no-brainer for the Big East, despite the odd geography, to add a team currently ranked in the top five, given the bad start to the year for the league. In the interest of avoiding an argument about the league's merits, I'll concede that the Big East is the worst BCS conference so far this year. But I do want to point something out: The Big East has no teams in either top 25 poll this year; the last BCS league to be shut out from both polls was the Pac-10 in 1999. Within a few years, the Pac-10 had recovered. Just because the BCS hierarchy is a certain way now doesn't mean it's the way it has always been or the way it always will be. The SEC hasn't always been the best league (and I'm not so convinced it even has been the past two years), and so on.

I don't think this will happen because I think TCU has to believe something better will come along, but today's story by NBC has raised my hopes just a bit. And regarding the geography: TCU is already the only Mountain West team in the central time zone, so it's not exactly a natural fit there either. Fort Worth is probably just as displaced from most of the Big East as it is the MWC. It's all going to be dictated by money, and whether or not TCU thinks it can gain more of it by waiting.

There were also reports a couple of weeks ago that the Big East was trying to convince Villanova, an elite FCS team and a Big East member in all other sports, to jump to FBS and join the league. That would be a huge relief to fans of Big East schools, because the unfortunate circumstance of having to schedule five out-of-conference games each year has been a burden. To go to a nine- or 10-team league for football would be great.

If you're looking to improve your league, why even think of adding Villinova? Does nothing for football. As for TCU, I think they'd likely wait and see what the Big 12 does. I'm betting it takes a year, maybe two max before they realize how stupid it is to not have a conference title game and add two teams. TCU, if they keep doing well, you would think would be a target there.

Course they could always join the Big East then bolt in a couple years if the Big 12 comes calling.

I just don't see the Big East climbing back up as is. The best coaches all leave, as have the best teams(VT, Miami, BC). What's left is a bunch of schools on the decline and the future doesn't look bright at any of them. You'd have to add in some really big time meaningful teams to turn it around and that isn't happening.

Adding Villanova wouldn't be so much about adding quality, it would be about adding quantity to add another Big East conference game, lightening the burden of scheduling five non-conference games.

Plus, ignoring TCU or any other school for a moment, Villanova would be adding a football team without having to worry about adding another basketball team.

Plus Villanova is like, good in football. At least on the FCS level. Can't be worse than Syracuse.

No way should they add TCU.. it'd mess up the basketball aspect.

That says a lot about how far Syracuse has fallen from their days as an eastern power in the 80's and 90's.
They made the offer to Nova 15 years ago at the same time they made it to UCONN to move up and join the Big East. UCONN took it and became a mid level football program, Villanova turned it down. The jump isn't as steep as it was a generation ago due to the scholarship rules. Still would be stadium issues though.
As for TCU: They would need to add an SMU or Houston just to make it feasible from a scheduling standpoint in other sports, plus it would provide a natural rivalry. Doesn't seem likely, but, that hasn't mattered in college football before.
Other alternative if they add TCU, don't want to/can't add another Texas team, 'Nova doesn't want to move up in football and still want to expand: Temple has seemed to have stopped being a disgrace. Would be a nice addition in basketball, and wouldn't be the bottom feeder they once were in football.

Temple is doing well, but we all know that'll only last as long as the coach stays. You'd have to think he's got a shot at the Penn State job if Joe Pa leaves so that may be pretty soon.

Honestly I wouldn't mind seeing BC go back to the Big East. Better fit in my view for them, though I doubt they'd be willing to make the move.

Why would BC make such a move. They are the centerpiece of the Atlantic Coast Conference. At least, that is what the administration still spouts at BC.

What's funny is Temple WAS in the Big east and got booted. Maybe they should be invited back if Villanova declines.

And they made an offer to UConn 15 years ago? Wow. Took them a while to join.

My error, it was 1997. UCONN needed a few years to go through the transition phase plus to build a stadium that met the Division IA minimum seating requirement.

The Grey Cup has been BC's to win or lose since about mid-season. It's been a disappointing season in the CFL, starting with the sudden dissipation of the Renegades weeks before the season started.
