Mariotti was arrested on a felony charge at 4:30 AM -- a police source tells us it is a domestic violence charge.
He is currently being held on $50,000 bail.
Mariotti is a regular on the ESPN show "Around the Horn" and a writer for the popular sports website Fanhouse.com.
Brought in on a FELONY? So this should pretty much spell the end for one Jay Mariotti. I'm sure Ozzie Guillen's having a good laugh about this somewhere.
The funny thing is, we've had Mariotti filling in on our local ESPN Radio here in Los Angeles and I was just about to beg spf to take him back in Chicago. Guess that won't be an issue anymore.
EDIT: And it really doesn't any funnier than one subdued Tweet from Roger Ebert

Now, I'm not saying that any of this is at all connected, but I do seem to remember a couple of years ago, Ozzie Guillen got into some hot water for questioning Jay Mariotti's sexual orientation.
Take us back to two weeks ago, when Prop 8 was overturned in California, revoking the ban on same sex marriages being legal.
Take us back to 4:30am today...Mariotti was arrested for a domestic violence charge in California.
LAPD sources said Mariotti allegedly got into an argument with his girlfriend at a club in Santa Monica.
The argument continued at the couple's apartment in Venice, where some type of physical altercation allegedly occurred. Police were called to the apartment, and Marioitti was arrested. He is currently being held at the 77th Street station.
I blame Woody Paige for this. He can make anyone go punch crazy with his commentary.
I know it's PTI and not related, but it should have been LeBatard arrested. Then his "BAM!" would have been appropriate for once instead of annoying like every other time he does it.
The level of hostility and glee about mariotti is something I've never seen in sports b4 over an arrest. Ever. Can't think of anything close
@LeBatardShow
Get it. U can't request fairness and benefit of doubt when u never extend it. But, damn, this excitement over a misery is scary/fascinating
Never seen anything like it in sports? Did I just imagine the glee people are getting over the Clemens and Bonds miseries? Even LeBatard can't be THIS dumb.

If Dan wants to see a far greater amount of glee, he should get himself arrested. It'll make those reveling in Mariotti's misery seem like they are chanting No Justice/No Peace at a Free Mariotti rally.
Fuck Jay Mariotti. He was a complete hack (back when he was an actual writer). All of these former sportswriters who leave actual journalism to move into the world of blogging end up complete jokes. The "freedom" they attain with unedited opinions is a mirage. They lose the discipline that comes with actually producing cogent columns and then usually morph into loud mouthed talking heads on some boring panel show. Kornheiser is the classic example of this phenomena. Mariotti living in Venice is perfect. He fits in with all of the other jive motherfuckers living there. I won't even get into how he used to carry water for the Cubs on a daily basis, bashing the Sox at every opportunity.

...what??
I don't remember why Mariotti left his paper to go blog, but I wouldn't be so sure it was merely for "freedom" or whatever. Newspapers are a dying breed. Leaving that world for the lure of new media is neither rare nor necessarily ill-advised.
And boring panel show? Nope, don't think that's accurate. Not one bit. But then again, it looks like you're also calling PTI a boring panel show, so maybe your tastes differ (from practically everyone else on the planet, that is).

Mariotti left writing to become a television personality. Not for freedom, but because he's fucking LAZY. It's easy to run your mouth for 30 minutes on tv. It's incredibly difficult to craft a well written article (which he couldn't do anyway).
PTI is a boring panel show. Kornheiser is a buffoon. Wilbon is an excellent writer and quite thoughtful on PTI amidst Kornheiser's endless idiocy. PTI has been boring and stale for years. Wilbon isn't really any good on the ABC/ESPN NBA pre & post panel, but he's a victim of the overall mediocrity of that show.
I'm happy with not agreeing with everyone else on the planet. But I highly doubt anyone outside the United States (more specifically age 18-50 white males) gives a fuck about ESPN's panel shows. Although I would like to notify the War Crimes Tribunal at the Hague about Skip Bayless' crimes against humanity.

As the story goes, Mariotti talked himself out of $6,000,000 in a dispute with his editor over a story assignment Jay the Rat wanted. He threatened to resign if he didn't get to write the story. Unfortunately for Jay - not only was the newspaper business model starting to collapse, a former publisher was recently convicted for embezzling millions from the parent company.
In short, Mariotti's 3-year, $6 million contract at that moment was not unlike Bret Hart's "lifetime deal" with Vince McMahon circa 1997. The editor was more than happy to accept the resignation on the spot.
Sayonara Jay. (Just a sample of reaction from around Chicago on the news back in August, 2008.)
I am not a fan of Mariotti, but I'll take a wait and see approach on the charges. The newspaper industry is not dead yet and probably won't be for another generation or two. Good newspaper companies have adapted to go online along with a physical paper. In some areas of the country, the local paper is more accessible then internet anyway. It sounds like he talked himself out of a job then did blogging while keeping his more profile day job on Around the Horn.
Some see it as being lazy, I say smart well not the talking yourself out of $6 million dollars over three years job, but doing the blog instead doing the newspaper. Shit, if I had the option and was getting paid almost the same as well, I say "Fuck the news job." You have no filter, you have no real deadline and probably don't have to travel around the planet for whatever sports events the sponsors and fans deem worthy enough to cover. Shit, if he got out of going to the World Cup, I'd consider it a win, who wants to spend a month in urban Africa? Right, no one. You are your own boss, isn't that the American dream?
Now, if he loses the Around the Horn and other ESPN shows, because of this then he might have to crawl back to the newspaper industry. If he doesn't then its a blip on the radar and he moves on. Personally, I think he is terrible on Around the Horn and I would be glad to see him gone. As for PTI, I love the show and I wish I was as much as a buffoon as Tony with the amount of vacation days he gets while still getting paid some good cash for the show.
No, it should be court-ordered that you over exaggerate the facts without just cause, declare yourself a menace to society, a violent criminal and a street thug. That you don’t deserve mercy. That your employers should immediately fire you. That all (remaining?) family should stick you on an ice flow and wave goodbye. That you don’t deserve second chances at life. That you are the worst vile piece of garbage ever produced in the history of the earth.
And it all must be true, because you wrote* that it be so. It would be the manifesto of a lifetime for you. And it should appear on the front pages of every newspaper you have torched and left behind in a rubble of destruction.
It isn't going to get better. Newspapers are dead. Why would I want to pay for old news (I canceled my Post subscription back in 2005) when I can get near up to the minute news online for my internet service I already pay for?
Let's look at the class of 2011 that is starting school soon, if not already. Most of them were born in 1993. I got my first email address with American University in 1994 (after having been on BBSs for the 10 years prior). Internet access was becoming more and more common by the end of the 90s. These kids were 8 when 9/11 happened. We all know how much the net was used for information back then (I know I was on The-w's old EZboard back then trying to find good sources for info). These kids have grown up with internet access for all of their teen years. (They also don't know what rotary phones, B&W TV, and HAM radios are, but that's for a different discussion.)
Once Americans adopt new technologies (Cell phones (I dropped my land line 2 years ago and my 911 works fine, TYVM), DVD, MP3 players, HDTV) they quickly ditch old technologies (Land lines, VHS, CDs, SDTV). These kids and next few graduating classes are not going to adopt print (with the exception of the WSJ because I think they are a special case for American print) when digital information is all they know.
People who still pay for papers are becoming the old dinosaurs in the world. The same people with land lines (or even corded phones), pagers, VHS tapes, cassettes or, and dialup internet service.
I don't know much about the iPad (which looks like an oversized PADD from Star Trek: The Next Generation to me) but newspapers should start to cater to iPad users if they don't already. One complaint is people want to actually HOLD something when they read the paper which is why they don't like reading it online.
I see the iPad as a good medium for someone who wants to move digitally, but still have something portable and readable. If there was a WSJ or NYT app for it, I'm sure people would buy it.

Well, I'm not in that demographic, nor are a sizable chunk of my friends. But other than you I have yet to hear anyone call PTI a "boring panel show." I think you might just be a little off base on this one.
Now, your views on Skip Bayless on the other hand, those I can roll with.
I'd say completely off-base. PTI is incredibly entertaining with Kornheiser/Wilbon. Now without them, it's pretty bad but with them it's great. Say whatever you want about his opinions or ability as a journalist, Kornheiser is a personality. And that's what is going to drive a show like PTI. And as for my own personal tastes, Wilbon infuriates me FAR more than Kornheiser. Wilbon knows jack about college football and his ignorant assumptions and opinions reinforce that. I also can't stand Wilbon's tendency to defend NBA players left-and-right without thought. While on the other hand, I could listen to Tony rant about clothing choice all day long.
Michigan against the SEC: 20-5-1 (7-3 in bowl games)
Honestly, if they had given her the red boots, I would have nothing to complain about. There's just so much blue! I almost missed the stars running down the sides of her pants, though.
