Two words.

Holy Frieking Shit!

This movie had some of the best action sequences and kill shots I have ever seen. Plenty of 80s style one liners, but nothing TOO cheesy. A total turn your brain off and enjoy a kick ass action flick movie!

I loved this movie. It will win no academy Awards and half of the elitist movie snobs on this site will call it pure dreck. Kiss my ass. This movie was everything I thought it could be and more. People died in the most fantastic ways ever and I discovered a newfound love for Jason Statham. The plot was thin as hell, the script appeared to have been written in half an hour and I couldn't give a shit.

This movie was a thumb in the nose to every a-hole director that has tried to rape my childhood by remaking every shallow piece of pop culture from the 80s that I hold so dear. I plan on seeing this in theater 2 or 3 more times and feeling no shame about it.

If you want to see any movie that resembled the superstar action films of the 80s, I couldn't recommend this movie any more. It was fantastic and I hope they make a sequel before Stallone and half of his castmates become wheelchair-bound. Fantastic.

Awesome. Just awesome. They need to make a sequel. Except this time. Just go for the R rating. This really felt like a PG-13 movie with some stuff tacked on to make it an R.

For a movie that was all about throwing a bunch of names into the action and calling it a day, they sure didn't do much with them. It was fun though, which I didn't think was going to happen as I thought Statham+Li was a death sentence.

Ironically Death Sentence sounds like the name of a movie that would star Statham and Li

Why Was Jean-Claude Van Damme Deemed Expendable for 'The Expendables'?
by Mike Ryan ยท August 13, 2010

In "The Expendables," Sylvester Stallone's latest guns-blazing return to the multiplex, the actor/director assembled a dream team of action stars to assist him with the very important work of blowing up everything in sight. Most notably, he recruited onetime big-screen rivals like Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Dolph Lundgren for his latest cinematic mission. An impressive collective of talent, to be sure, but the all-star roster of shoot-'em-up heroes has at least one glaring omission: Jean-Claude Van Damme. Whither the "Muscles from Brussels," star of "Hard Target," "Timecop," and "Universal Solider"?

Van Damme, it turns out, did get a call from Stallone to join his team of Expendables, but he wasn't thrilled with the pitch. He told TotalFilm, "Stallone gave me a part in his next movie. [He] said, 'You're gonna make lots of money.' I don't want to hear that, I want to hear what was my character. He was unable to tell what it's going to be." So Van Damme, showing admirable dedication to the purity of his craft, passed.

In a 2009 press conference, Van Damme recounted pretty much the same story, adding that he'd advised Stallone that, instead of doing "The Expendables," Stallone should make a movie where Sly plays a "tough priest." According to Van Damme, Stallone found this "insulting." If nothing else, Van Damme does do a pretty nifty Stallone impression.

At this year's Comic-Con, Stallone addressed the casting offers, including two other high-profile no-shows that were not meant to be. His take differs slightly: "I talked to Van Damme. I talked to [Steven] Segal. I even talked to Chuck Norris." He then added, "But there are certain considerations, like insanity."

In fairness to Van Damme, the actor does seem to have a somewhat more introspective take on his career of late. In 2008, he starred in the independent film "JCVD," playing a fictionalized version of himself: an out-of-work action star who finds himself at a bank while it's being robbed. Of course, Van Damme's newfound introspection doesn't explain why he starred in 2009's "Universal Soldier: Regeneration."

"The Expendables," opening this weekend, tells the story of a group of mercenaries who attempt to overthrow the government of a small South American island. In addition to the aforementioned line-up of Stallone, Willis, Schwarzenegger, and Lundgren, Jet Li, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, and Jason Statham join in on the mayhem.

Meh, I was a little disappointed. I wasn't expecting a cinematic wonder here, but even as action films go, this was pretty weak for me. There appeared to be no budget for special effects after they secured this cast, so many of the deaths looked like bad CGI. There weren't even a bunch of good one-liners, and this from the man who wrote Rocky (in a weekend, legend has it). I also think Dolph Lundgren sucks in general, did nothing but the one Rocky film and that horrible, childhood-destroying Masters of the Universe turd, and think Carl Weathers would have been a much better choice (and can actually act). I also figure the filmmakers aren't familiar with Austin's history, but having him punch a woman in the face is a bit unnerving for those of us who are. Those are the things that could have been helped. What couldn't be is that there was just something depressing about seeing these leathery, haggard, ancient manfaces in extreme close-up for an hour and half. And one sexy girl, but no boobie-shot? Come on, either we're R or we're not.

All that being said, it was okay. I laughed at some remarkable deaths, there was good choreography in the fight scenes, Mickey Rourke actually manages to get a moving scene in an action flick and remains awesome, it had a sexy latin woman, and there was good chemistry among the cast. I don't want to give the impression I didn't enjoy myself, but I was just wanting to LOVE this film, and I didn't. Seemed like a straight-to-video feature.

It starts a little slow, but once the second half gets rolling it is pure gold.

My favorite part was Terry Crews mowing down a whole army with that freakin' cannon he had.

The surreal things in this movie like the Willis/Stallone/Arnold scene, commenting Arnold wants to be president, referring to Austin as a woman beater and so on made me love this movie. Its everything an action film needed to be and more. Most fun I have all year at a movie.

Typical action film; not the best plot but a lot of stuff and people getting blown up but regardless, good action movie to see.

And for the record, it was hard to take General Garza serious seeing how it was Angel Batista from Dexter and pretty much played the same type of attitude to his character on Dexter.

If I remember correctly, and this is kinda funny, DEATH SENTENCE was one of the original titles used for THE ONE.
