So. I've been losing some weight recently but now I'm not sure if I believe my scale anymore. I generally get a "good" reading, but it's been fluctuating 15 pounds either way for a couple of days now.

Also, for what I've supposedly lost (96 pounds in 2 months) my stomach isn't really all that much smaller (around two inches) Should I go with the highest number, or the more consistent of the three?

My wife also uses the scale, and she seems to think it's OK, but I really don't know anymore.

Water weight can be more than you'd think. I fluctuate between 160 and 180 fairly regularly depending on what I've been doing for the past few days (cardio vs strength training vs rest) and how hydrated and fed I am. If you're trying to lose weight, the actual number doesn't matter, just as long as you are seeing a trend over time. Changes in the human body are very rarely linear.

Also, the gut is one of the last things to go when losing weight since it's one of the first things males get when gaining weight.

I'm no doctor, but if this is true maybe you should go see a doctor. This is an average of about 1.5 pounds per day - that's not healthy no matter how well you're eating.

A good approximation of calories to pounds is 3,500 calories to the pound - it's not exact and varies based on many factors, but it's a starting point. So you, for this to be true, would be burning more than 5,000 calories MORE than you consume per day. I don't think it's possible to do that in a healthy way.

A while back I wanted to lose some weight so I just ate salads and diet Sprite for a week. I got on the scale and it said that I had lost 15 lbs. I was so happy that I went out to celebrate by having just a cheeseburger and fries.

The next morning I got on the scale and it said I had gained back all 15 lbs.

I am on a weight loss program right now (55 lbs since Feb 10th).

a: I only weigh in "officially" (ie: that's when I record it) once a week, as soon as I get up on Sunday mornings.

b: I do weigh in at other times, but I don't pay much attention - for example, my weigh in weight this past Sunday was 283.2, but I stepped on the scale this morning for informational purposes and I weighed 278.9. I pay that no mind (except - wow, 270s - it's been 10-12 years since I was in that range!) and won't get excited until Sunday.

c: I chart my food with a calorie scale and always eat to within 10% of my goal, or as close to that as I can, including work out calories. (my goal is 1919 right now, and I typically get somewhere in the neighborhood of 4-500 Calories from workout each day, so I shoot for 2300 to 2500 calories)

d: The most I have lost in a week (not counting the first couple weeks where you drop like a rock) has been 5 lbs, and I was on a weird schedule that week.

e: I really haven't changed my diet much except just eating less and working out a little more. Oh, and eating less Hamburgers and fries. But that's just because those bad boys are a whole days' food in one burger.

I agree with tbf and AWArulz. Past the first two weeks, you really should only be losing like a pound or two a week. I've been dieting for about the same time you have, and I'm down 30 pounds.

I dropped about 15 lbs fairly quickly - but have plateaued between 15-20 lbs of loss. I'm working out (somewhat) regularly and eating a much better diet. I'm also in the best shape of my life, so I'm not so worried about what the scale says anymore. Simply embracing the fact that I feel better (and I'm noticeably lighter on my feet during our softball season) is enough to keep me going.

I'm even considering doing the local half-marathon in November (less so now that I found out that the registration fee is over $100).

I'm working with a friend who is a personal trainer (and actually owns a local gym). She mentioned this very issue to me. Apparently, it happens to body builders and other athletes when they're in their off-season.

According to her...

Basically, since you've abstained from red meat, which is harder to digest than salads and vegetables, the burger was a shock to your system. A lot of the weight you "gained" was probably water weight in order to digest the hamburger. The calories and fat played less of a role than your body's struggle to digest.

Another thing to keep in mind when dieting & exercising, is that muscle weighs more than fat. While you may be losing fat, the gains in muscle will not give you the full measure of your true progress if you are simply using the scale as a barometer.

As a general rule, I try to avoid going on the scale to gauge my health. We all know when we feel better/stronger & when our clothing fits of we have to hold our breath all day to get into a pair of khakis. The scale can serve as a blessing or a curse, depending on how much muscle you are putting on & can often end up discouraging you from continuing on a healthy path when the scale doesn't tell you what you want to see.

When I started I was around 433 (not really sure as I didn't have a scale that would go that high.) I limit myself to around 1000 calories/day, and drink a whole lot of water. I also "cheat" between 6pm Friday and 6pm Saturday and so far it's kept me going pretty well.

I was actually off in my math in the first post, and have "only" lost 86 pounds, well 88 now as I'm at 355.

Like AWA I'm constantly amazed because I haven't really been this light since the mid-90s (which was right after high school) so I think I'll stick with it a bit (probably through August) and see where I end up.

ETA: It appears my scale was *way* off, like 70 pounds. Which is weird, because there was a definite downward trend going on, and it's very odd that it would go out a pound or so a day, and get going out that much for two months. *le sigh*
