Hello friends - Independence Day kind of makes this week an afterthought as far as releases go, but we still have 152 or 153 DVDs and 18 or 19 Blu-rays to tell you about.
As usual, hover over a title for the pre-order price (usually when new DVDs are at their cheapest), click to visit Amazon and maybe learn more. We also provide more information by way of links to the Internet Movie Database, tv.com, movie websites and distributor information.
Without further ado, let's head straight away to our
PICK OF THE WEEK
I got nothin'...so instead, let's put the Doctor Who up here at the top!
Marty Stouffers Wild America (Seasons 1-4) I guess "Collectors Edition" means two less seasons for more money if you don't know about this one from 2009 (see, THIS is why you subscribe - so I can save you two bucks and get you two more seasons of a show you were NEVER going to buy on DVD to BEGIN with! Why haven't you told a friend about me yet?)
Again, another light week for the blockbusters and majors. The current top selling movie is: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Män Som Hatar Kvinnor - Sweden/Denmark/Germany/Norway, 2009) I don't know much about this film, but I do know John can't stop tweeting about how he'd cast the American remake The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo [Blu-ray] Also, followup "The Girl Who Played with Fire" opened THIS week (well, last week - 7/2) and there's one more to come because this is a trilogy! There, now I know even MORE about this film somehow
COLLECTION Sci-Fi Movie Collection Box Set [Blu-Ray] 10 movies that look like they may all be ripoffs - sorry, "mockbusters" - from The Asylum - please, waste your $75 by just sending it to me, I promise you'll feel better than if you'd bought this (ahem) "collection"
AND FINALLY... Larry the Cable Guy: Git-R-Done [Blu-ray] (made for TV, 2004) Yes, friends, your long wait is over and this man can now say "Git-R-Done" a THOUSAND times on BLU-RAY - more info and trailer (why?) at Image (image-entertainment.com)
Jet Li 8 Film Set (2pc) No....they DIDN'T say which 8 - but they DO say that Jet Li is a (and I'm quoting here) "superstar" - elsewhere on the Internet you can learn that the eight films are Jet Li: The Kung Fu Years, Evil Cult, The Last Hero in China, The Bodyguard for Beijing, Dr. Wai in the Scripture with No Words, Fist of Legend 2: Iron Bodyguards, Lee-thal Weapon and Legend of Kung Fu Hero, all of which I encourage you to look up yourself 'cause no way am *I* doin' it
Ultimate Machine Girl: Collectors Tin (3pc) (Ws) OK, so we have the girl with the machine gun arm (Kataude Mashin Gâru - USA/Japan, 2008) ...and I have NO idea what might be on the OTHER two discs - rescheduled from 5/25
Casanova '70 (Italy/France, 1965) I think we all know what "sensuous fun" is code for here (7/12)
The Wind Journeys (Los Viajes del Viento - Colombia/Netherlands/Argentina/Germany, 2009) Trailer and English information at Film Movement (filmmovement.com) The Wind Journeys Same as above, different distributor?
25 Action Classics I'm just not sure how you can fit 25 movies onto 2 discs, even if they ARE double-sided - oh well - only a partial list on the cover, so good luck with that 25 Gangster Classics Ditto 25 Western Classics Tritto
AND THE REST OF THE MOVIES OF THE WEEK
Bigfoot: Mysterious Monster (Cinema Insomnia Slime Line) (The Mysterious Monsters - 1976) Mr Lobo hosts this "documentary" The Last Days of Frankie the Fly & Search & Destroy (1996) (1995) A Dennis Hopper double feature - don't ask why, just accept it Recycled Parts (2007) This MAY be a recycled movie - Girstin Bergquist (must be his - his? - oops, her real name), David Dartt, Brandon Brendel, Lisa Gail, Michael Dias Bitten (direct to video, 2008) Jason Mewes (is probably not the pretty looking girl on the cover - that's Erica Cox) - more info at RHI (rhitv.com)
Growing Op (Canada, 2008) Steven Yaffee, Rachel Blanchard, Wallace Langham, Rosanna Arquette - rescheduled from 5/4 Love for Sale (2008) Hmm....it's this one, only with a new cover and new (more expensive price). Why? The only man who knows runs Image (image-entertainment.com)
Eyeborgs (2009) Eyeborgs - really? Eyeborgs? Ooee. Adrian Paul, Megan Blake, Luke Eberl, John S. Rushton, Danny Trejo - yes, I also can't believe nobody'd snapped up "eyeborgs.com" until now: Eyeborgs [Blu-ray] I think we can all agree that "Eyeborgs" just automatically lends itself to Blu-ray - more info also at Image
The Familiar (2009) Street Boss (2009) Robert Gallo, Nick Turturro, Vincent Pastore Also more info at Maverick (maverickentertainment.cc) Salvage (UK, 2009) Two-Minute Heist (2009) Dan DeLuca, Kris Arnold, Natalie Diorio, Brian Sherman
CELEBRITY SOMETHINGEROTHER On the Record "candid interviews" yet "100% unauthorised" - so I guess it's whatever archival footage they can string together - Simon Cowell's on the cover - oh hey here's a YouTube trailer (youtube.com) WHYYYYYYY (import)

Sorry for the late post, but I actually just saw this movie last week in the local indie/foreign/artsy-fartsy theater and thought it was fantastic! The book was terrific, and the movie was VERY true to the book. It is a really good story, and the acting was great. There was zero book-to-movie disappointment at all for me, though my expectations for the Hollywood release next year (or whenever) are considerably lower. That said, it doesn't look like the reviews for the next two movies in the series (The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest) are nearly as positive. My wife didn't read the book and loved the movie also, so if you can handle subtitles for around 150 minutes, I would definitely recommend this...and if you're looking for a good read, the books are even better.

Hey! It's been like a month since I've done that. Now I don't even remember who I would want cast as Lisbeth Salander. I remember suggesting Megan Fox (in all seriousness, she could do it). Mary Elizabeth Winstead would be really good. I forget who else I Tweeted about. Roger Ebert wants Kristen Stewart, who would work, but she wouldn't be my first choice. Ebert also seems to think Carey Mulligan has the role locked up, although I don't know if he has any inside information on her being cast -- you're right, I really can't stop talking about this. One thing's for damn sure, whomever David Fincher casts, she better be willing and able to get nekkid.

I've been reading a bunch that it's gonna be Daniel Craig and Mulligan in the lead roles. I've also heard Natalie Portman (dunno), and Ellen Page (might work) for Salander.
This is probably why I have no future as a Hollywood type, but I'd seriously, seriously consider letting Noomi Rapace carry the role over to the American version. She nailed the first movie, she can speak English, and if her performance in the first movie was in English to begin with, she'd be getting major Best Actress buzz (in fact, she did win the Swedish equivalent of the Oscars Best Actress award for the film when it was released in Sweden in 2009).

She's not interested. "I have done my Lisbeth," she says.
Mulligan was really good in An Education. I dunno if she can do "tough," though.
