The Recap for TNA Impact 7.1.2010, taped from the Impact Zone in Orlando, FL.

We start the show with Abyss throwing chairs in the ring and terrorising people ringside. He turns his attention to SoCal Val but Hogan interrupts, presumably to teach him a lesson. That doesn't last too long because Bischoff interrupts HIM, and NOW the security gets here and separates them. Bischoff badmouths Abyss and smacks him in the face, allowing Hogan to attack from behind with a chair. Abyss no-sells, so Jeff Hardy attacks with more chairs and a Swanton Bomb. Abyss eventually recovers and starts yelling at Hardy but security prevents further action. Meanwhile Abyss heads to the commentary teams and stares at Taz while beating up on security, presumably for being so damned slow. Odd opening. If I cared more about Abyss, I would've cared more about this segment. 0 for 1.

Backstage, Abyss acts like a nut, throwing chairs everywhere. Hardy tells Bischoff and Hogan that he wants Abyss tonight, so they grant him a match. Bischoff says they have his back.

Match 1: Motor City Machine Guns over Ink Inc via pin (Sabin on Neal - Made in Detroit) in 6 minutes. A win for the MCMG is always good, but I would've liked for the focus to be more on them rather than the overlong 3D/Neal feud. This match ended when Ray stormed down the ring and Devon stopped him, and the distraction allowed the Guns to wipe out Neal. Still, decent enough. 1 for 2.

Tenay announces that the pope is returning today. Bischoff interrupts HIM (really, what an ass) to announce Abyss v Hardy with RVD as special guest ref for tonight. That could've been done backstage.

Match 2: Samoa Joe (#6) over AJ Styles (#4) via Coquina Clutch in 7 minutes. They seemed to be going only at three-quarters-speed and still managed to blow your average Impact match clear out of the water. 2 for 3. Post match, Flair and Kaz enter the ring and Flair looks rather disappointed. Kaz seems to be the new golden boy. AJ takes exception to that and challenges Kaz to a match next week. Flair is ok with that.

Hogan, Bischoff, and Dixie are in a meeting about Sting. Bischoff says this is who Sting is, and what he's doing is borderline criminal. Dixie argues that they need to find out why he's doing all this. Hogan says that the talent will leave is nothing is done about it. Dixie says she will do something, she has to do it by herself.

Match 3: Submission Match: Brian Kendrick over Desmond Wolfe in 3 minutes via Cobra Clutch. Desmond Wolfe = jobber right now. This match was nothing special, and the finish came as the result of a Chelsea distraction. I like Kendrick, I liked Doug Williams on commentary, but I DO NOT LIKE treating Des Wolfe as a jobber. That is a load of shit. 2 for 4.

Tommy Dreamer walks to the back. The cameraman asks him if he's going to show up in TNA, but Dreamer gives him no answers.

The Pope makes his return after a video package, and crowd loves him. He says this moment has made him realize how busting his ass in the ring is worth every moment. He's at 80% but he knows he has the responsibility of being the Pope of this Congregation. He thanks everyone, including "Eric Pope" and "Dixie Pope." He says he's in it to win it and that he hasn't forgotten about Anderson either. His goal is to return to #1 in the rankings. Kurt Angle is out to call Pope the future of TNA. But at Victory Road, it's #9 Kurt Angle v #8 Pope. Angle says the match is on and may the best man win. Simple but strong work. 3 for 5.

Jay Lethal is out now, and he's pissed. He says he no longer respects Ric Flair. Last week, Styles and Flair beat up his brother, who's not even a wrestler. He says he's not leaving here till Flair and Styles come out. Matt Morgan shows up instead and apologizes for interrupting. Well, not really. Morgan says that Flair came out two weeks ago, and spoke of forming a group called Fortune. Well, that makes Morgan the only man in TNA who remembers about Fortune. Morgan claims that he was the first man Flair asked to join Fortune but he's yet to make a decision about that, but there is one thing he and Flair agree on...

Match 4: Jay Lethal over Matt Morgan via Springboard Dropkick in 5 minutes after Hernandez-ference. A decent match for what it was, but lacked the crowd heat of the last few weeks. Hernandez really needs to make his low blows look less blatant because otherwise the ref winds up looking like a giant tool for not being able to spot it. 4 for 6.

Abyss channels his inner Warrior and cuts a rambling promo while hammering nails into a board. He says it's just a matter of time before 'they' own TNA. See, this is where Kane is so much better than Abyss. When Abyss tries to look delusional/creepy/crazy he just winds up coming across as cheesy. When Kane goes crazy, you buy into him. Kane's promos make sense, too. "Did mommy and daddy tell you there's no such thing as a monster? Well, THEY LIED!"

Match 5: Non-title: Madison Rayne over Taylor Wilde via Rayne Drop in 3 minutes. Nothing match. 4 for 7. Angelina Love attacks postmatch but Rayne avoids the DDT.

Dixie Carter heads to the rafters to confront Sting.

Backstage, Sarita and Taylor Wilde get into a long brawl before the slow-ass security gets there to put a stop to it. Sarita gets the final word with a resounding slap.

Dixie finds Sting. He asks if she can see what's going on around here. She says she can, that he's the cancer, and suspends him for 30 days. Sting says he's been saying it all along, and she's not listening. Eric Bischoff shows up to call security. Better hope they get there before tomorrow. Sting says there's no need and asks her to make the suspension indefinite. Bischoff says Dixie needs protection, and Sting says she needs someone with her 24 hours a day. Yeah, hopefully she hires some private contractors and not TNA security. 4 for 8.

Match 6: Jeff Hardy over Abyss via Swanton Bomb in 6 minutes. It's no secret that I like long main events, and in that regard, this fell short. That aside, it was a fairly good match and a good way to hype the four-way at the PPV. Post match, Abyss beats on RVD and Hardy and takes his nail board out for some action, but Anderson interrupts with a chair. He has the upper hand until he accidentally wipes out Hardy with a chair. That distracts him long enough for Abyss to hit the Shock Treatment. 5 for 9. Abyss stands tall as we end the show.

Wrestling Counter: 30 minutes.

The Score: 5 for 9: Both the matches in the first half of the show delivered and there was a decent amount of wrestling. Abyss continues to be the focus of the show, and while I'm not a fan of that development, it does lend a sense of focus to an otherwise ADD show. The Sting saga, I have lost interest in, and if it leads to more Sting main events, then I'm going to be even more annoyed. They did a decent job of advancing stories, though sometimes at the expense of guys who should be looking strong (i.e. the MCMG win should not have been marred by the Ray/Neal story; Des Wolfe should not have been fed to Kendrick). The other positive I noticed was the consistently good mic work throughout this show, and there was nothing really cringe-worthy. Overall, a decent waste of two hours.

Bischoff trying to "protect" Hogan and Dixie makes me think it's all one giant ruse and he's going to turn on them both. I'd say heel Bischoff is played out, but face Bischoff is so phony. I guess what I'm saying is, I'd like for Eric Bischoff to go away now.

I can't stand nonsensical heel turns with no rhyme or reason, so you can probably see why Sarita's heel turn was so freakin' aggravating.

Speaking of nonsensical heel turns with no rhyme or reason, I still hate what they're doing with Abyss. Though I hate it less than Hulkamaniac Abyss.

Perhaps it was the Noid who should have avoided me.

Insane Abyss is the best Abyss. I think the KO needs a blood feud, just a hardcore destruction of bodies maybe Wilde/Sarita could pull that off or it will circle the drain like most of the KOs right now. I thought it was a decent show with some good matches like MCMG/Ink Inc. and AJ/Joe. I hate that Kenderick made Wolfe tap. Kenderick is a mid carder for life while Wolfe has a ton of potential to be a champion. Pope and Kurt were both awesome on the mic and I have no problem with Morgan losing to Jay. I thought it was a decent show, I went to bed before the ME, so I appreciate the recap. Victory Road maybe a buy considering there is nothing on TV on Sundays and most of the matches look good.

The backdoor meeting between Hogan, Bischoff, and Dixie Carter was a fascinating semi-shoot microcosm of how TNA is being run.

Dixie: "So what's the problem? I really don't know."
Hogan: "Well, brother, we've identified the problem. The one thing that's keeping TNA from skyrocketing up into the stratosphere like a rocket-powered jetpack of star-gazing awesomeness, brother!"
Dixie: "Oh good. What is it?"
Hogan: "It's Sting."
Dixie: "Really?"
Bischoff: "Yup. It's Sting."
Dixie: "I guess that's true. I mean, he's been no trouble before, but..."
Bischoff: "He's trouble now."
Hogan: "He's a cancer, brother. We have to cure cancer."
Dixie: "Are you sure it's Sting? I thought for a second, you were gonna say Rus--"
Vince Russo (outside the room): "Hey, I didn't write that! Get the fuck in there!"
Kevin Nash (bursts into room): "Whoa ho! What's going on here?"
Hogan, Dixie, Bischoff: "Not now, Kevin!"
Nash: "Well, see ya."
Bischoff: "Anyway, we have to do something about Sting. He's out of control. With Sting gone, ratings will go up, the ship will sail smoothly, this company will be the greatest wrestling company in the world."
Dixie: "I thought it already was. We say it every week."
Hogan: "Not until we get rid of Sting. He's out of control."
Dixie: "What about Abyss? I thought he was your biggest problem."
Bischoff: "Never mind Abyss. We're talking about Sting now."
Dixie: "Okay. Well, he has changed. But he's been doing right by this company for years, a lot longer than you."
Hogan: "We've known him longer than you have. He's always been a cancer."
Dixie: "If you say so. You know best."
Bischoff: "We do. We really do."
Dixie: "Okay, what would you have me do?"
Bischoff: "You're the President of this company. You have to go talk to him."
Dixie: "Why me?"
Hogan: "He'll listen to you."
Dixie: "If you say so, Hulk. But what exactly am I supposed to talk to him about?"
Bischoff: "Just talk to him. We'll come with you, you know, if you want."
Dixie: "No, I'm a big girl. I can do it myself!"
Bischoff: "Atta girl!"
Hogan: "That's the TNA spirit, brother!"

The show has some nice matches and promos, plus very little crap. In other words, a pretty decent wrestling show. Lots of newer guys are getting solid pushes right now (Jay, Pope, Morgan, Hernandez), and the established TNA homegrown guys are as well (AJ, Joe, Abyss, Kaz). I don't think enough people are acknowledging that. Very few has beens are still in the picture, and the so called "WWE cast offs" like Angle, Anderson, RVD, & Hardy can all still go.

Yes, I would prefer Wolfe just not even being on TV if they are going to use him like this, but you can't have everything.

So next week is when Flair turns on Kaz and reveals the whole AJ thing is a swerve, right? The guy's been around for 30 years, surely Kaz has actually SEEN Flair in action and knows his M.O.?

Well, he beat Hernandez a few weeks ago, and beat AJ last night. He may not be getting pushed to the moon, but it's a long way from being buried, IMO.

I would also like to mention how much I enjoyed Abyss scaring the crap out of those kids in the front row. That's the kind of old school heelish antics we just don't see enough of these days.

Of course, Bischoff HAD to interrupt right before Sting was finally going to reveal the reasons for his new attitude to Dixie. You know, the reasons we've been waiting on for months now.

Is it cynical of me to think that the reason for the whole Abyss push is so that he can win the belt and Hogan can step in and "save the company, brother"?

I didn't catch the whole show only the last thirty minutes, or so, due to forgetting to Tivo it.

How does Pope start at #8 in the rankings when he's been gone for like three months? (And how does the old #8 feel about that).

Why would they turn a Sarita heel when they lack credible faces in the Knockouts division, as it is (I mean they fired Roxxi, let ODB go, Taylor is hardly ever seen on television). Really, also, leave it to TNA to think that someone with a moveset like Sarita would get over better as a heel then as a face. God, remember when the Knockouts division was good? ><

Sooo over the non-push Desmond, is getting. Seriously, he had to go through an awful feud with Abyss and now he's jobbing to Kendrick?

I thought that Abyss vs. Hardy was a pretty good match but having RVD in the ring as guest ref just reminded me of how badly they're under using him. Seriously, what a lackluster reign as champion since they moved back to Thursdays.

I just can't get in to Abyss, either, but I don't really like hardcore wrestling and that's really all he seems to do.

If I had to guess, I'll say it will turn out that Sting has been trying to find out Hogan and Bishoff's motives since coming in. He turned on Jarrett because Jarrett sided with them. Same for Dixie. It will come out that Hogan has had good intentions and Bischoff is the same old Uncle Eric.

Of course, I doubt TNA puts even a third of that thought into these things...

And Dixie just HAD to stand there with a look on her face like "Gee, I'd kinda like to hear what Sting has to say...but it would be so unladylike to speak when the menfolk are having a conversation."

Pretty clear he's getting a push. Since he came back from being abducted he's been pushed as a bad ass again and they seem to be setting him up as Rvd's challenger at BFG. Imo this is the best that they've booked him since Russo came back.

Uh, Angle's the guy with the longrunning number one contendership story. Joe's been vacillating between wins and losses since he returned, with no direction whatsoever. Watch this week's Impact and see if you stick with your Joe/RVD prediction.

Slightly off-topic, but did they explain the kidnapping thing? I've only seen odds and ends of TNA lately, and I can't remember seeing anything in the recaps apart from Karlos' mention of the "Joe's Cardboard Box Fort" video.

Apologies if I just blatantly missed something.

I might end up being as wrong as you were with your Edge and Christian prediction. We'll see. He has not been pinned since he returned. He had a pin stolen from him in the 4way by Rvd a month or so ago. I have bashed TNA as much as anyone when it comes to their booking of Joe Ulimately, you'll likely be correct.

I like Samoa Joe but I don't know if you would consider this a push. Maybe it's the taping schedule but his appearances are just so random and TNA isn't really doing anything to make me interested in the character, right now.

I can't remember if he's had any interaction with the top four in the main event at all - hasn't he been mostly taking out the midcarders? Again, I could be forgetting something but, again, that just goes back to the whole "not-making-him-memorable" thing.

I'm not even sure I see RVD as champion after Victory Road, really, they haven't really booked him to be pretty strong these last few weeks unlike Abyss, who seems to be the pet project, right now.
