The Recap for TNA Impact 6.17.2010, taped from the Impact Zone in Orlando, FL.

After the Slammiversary recap, the show opens with Bischoff in his office. He has the tag belts with him. He says being champions brings responsibility, and due to Scott Hall's personal issues, The Band are stripped of the titles. Tonight we will start a tournament to determine the opponents for the Motor City Machine Guns at Victory Road. I'm glad to see that they haven't forgotten MCMG.

Match 1: Ink Inc. over The Band (Eric Young and Kevin Nash) via pin (Moore on Young - Mooregasm) in 6 minutes. Formula match where Neal gets his ass kicked, then gets the hot tag and Moore does the housecleaning. Decent enough, though, AND it takes The Band out of the tag picture. 1 for 1.

Ric Flair comes out with his entire entourage. He says he has an announcement that would change wrestling. Another one? He says when he talks, the world listens, and then is immediately proven wrong as the program cuts to a break. Sad.

Backstage, Chelsea pleads with Abyss to let her stay with him, but he ain't havin' none of that. He tells her to go back to Desmond, because after tonight, she wouldn't want to be with him.

Flair is in the ring and he says he's going to revive the Four Horsemen, and is going to call the group 'Fortune.' He promises that Fortune will change the destiny of the business and change the direction of TNA. That is a terrible name. He berates his entire posse, telling them how the original Horsemen would kick their asses. He says Styles has committed career suicide by not being able to beat that little pissant, Jay Lethal. He calls Wolfe the Lex Luger of the group in that he thinks he's a big-time player, but he's actually done nothing. Lethal is out to address Flair, complete with a Flair-like jacket. Lethal breaks into a full Flair impersonation, saying that it looks like the Horsemen took a dump in the ring and left it. He steals as many of Flair's lines as he can while taking a verbal dump on "Fortune." That leads to a battle of WOOs. Lethal starts elbowdropping his jacket again! Wolfe cuts him off and tells him to shut up, but Lethal tells him that jumping on is a lot easier than jumping off. Or vice versa, I'm not sure. It didn't make sense to me. Flair objects as that is his line, and they argue over that. Flair tells Wolfe that if he takes care of Lethal tonight, he'll make him the first member of Fortune. The announcement of 'Fortune' elicited a big 'Meh' from me, but the comedy stuff was good and if Lethal/Wolfe gets time, it has potential as well. 2 for 2.

Someone asks Mr. Anderson if we're gonna see the "Real" Mr. Anderson tonight. He replies that it depends on who you think the real Anderson is.

Match 2: Samoa Joe over Hernandez via Exploder Suplex in 3 minutes. Matt Morgan hit a BLATANT low blow that the ref contrived to miss, allowing Joe to hit the suplex for the win. Match did nothing for me. 2 for 3.
Post match, Joe sees the replay and comes back for Morgan, who's ready for him. What he's not ready for, however, is Hernandez trying to blindside him, and he bails just in time. Smells like a triple threat for the next PPV.

Des Wolfe is in the back, getting ready. Styles comes by to taunt him, but Des tells him that he's gonna do what Styles couldn't. Styles mentions Chelsea, then wishes him a very asshole-ish good luck, reminding him that he's out of the group if he loses.

Jeff Hardy ponders if he can trust Anderson in the main event tonight. Anderson drops by to wish him luck, so Hardy calls him an asshole. Anderson agrees. I like people who get along. It's refreshing on a TNA show.

Doug Williams is in the ring to gloat about his "incredible flying manoeuvre" and how it has made the whole X-division redundant. He promises to bust it out again tonight. That leads to...

Match 3: Non-title: Douglas Williams over Max Buck via Diving Tornado DDT in 3 minutes. Impact Special~(tm) They crammed in a lot of stuff, but this was a nothing match. Plus, if this little DDT is going to replace the bundle of awesome that is the Chaos Theory, then it's a no-go as far as I'm concerned. No soup for YOU! 2 for 4. Postmatch, Williams tries to turn Max Buck into a pretzel, but Brian Kendrick puts on a rear-naked choke on HIM. Williams taps like a little bitch, but Kendrick won't let go. The crowd likes that.

Angelina Love is out in the ring, and she says she's realized that an athlete's career is too short. She doesn't plan on wasting another second of it - it's gonna be Lacey tonight, Velvet next week, and Rayne at the PPV.

Match 4: Lacey von Erich over Angelina Love via DQ (DDT on Chair) in 3 minutes. Lacey's in-ring gear was...um...hideous, for the lack of a better word. More story than match, and decent enough. I'll give it the benefit. 3 for 5.

Hogan advises Lethal that he has to hang on tight now, because the heat is on. He puts him over as gifted and talented, and muses if Lethal could do a Hogan impersonation.

Christy Hemme is backstage with Jeff Hardy. Hardy says he'd love to mix it up with RVD at the PPV, but he's focused on tonight. Anderson comes by to tell him that it's just people stirring the pot. He reminds him of all the times he's had a fistfight with his brother and then how everything turned out fine. Anderson says it's no different tonight, because at the end of the night, they can look at each other as men. They bump fists and move on out of there.

Match 5: Beer Money over Team 3-D via pin (Roode on Devon - Beer Spit + rollup) in 4 minutes. Too short to mean anything. The right team went over, though. 3 for 6. 3D had set up for the 3D when Ray got distracted and got into a brawl with Ink Inc, leading to the finish.

Des Wolfe explains to Chelsea that she has a chance to redeem herself in the upcoming match.

Match 6: Jay Lethal over Des Wolfe via German Suplex-Neckbreaker in 2 minutes. Way to go, TNA. This was all about the various angles - Des Wolfe keeps yelling at Chelsea instead of paying attention to the match, and Tommy Dreamer sits in the crowd and applauds. I don't mind angles, but when they eat up what is potentially your match of the night, it's just dumb. 3 for 7. Postmatch, Flair and Wolfe take it to Lethal before Hogan runs them off. Hogan says that people like Lethal is the reason that TNA are on fire right now. I see signs of senility in Hogan. Hogan announces Flair v Lethal at Victory Road. Well, there's your early contender for Trash of the Night at Victory Road.

New top-ten rankings! 10 Angle 9 Wolfe 8 Pope 7 Lethal 6 Joe 5 Sting 4 Styles. There is no agreement on the top 3, hence the main event tonight.

Jeff Jarrett calls out Sting and he obliges. Jarrett launches into the same old spiel about professionalism, bringing Sting to TNA, 8 years, iconic status, honor, dignity, blah blah blah. It goes on forever. He says at Sacrifice, Sting tried to end his career, his livelihood, and he wants to know why. I'd just want to whoop his ass, but I guess Jeff doesn't feel that way. Jeff says "Steve" made a mistake because he left him standing. Sting starts laughing, probably at Jeff using such a tired cliché. Jeff wants a rematch, and he promises that he's gonna be fighting for Bischoff, Hogan, and the TNA fans. I hope he loses. Sting is not laughing anymore. Terrible. 3 for 8.

Match 7: Three-Way No.1 Contendership match: Abyss, Mr. Anderson, and Jeff Hardy fought to a triple countout via Sportz Entertainment Finish(tm) in 4 minutes. Utter shit. 3 for 9.
Postmatch, Abyss slams Anderson into shards of glass and chokeslammed Hardy off a stage into a table. Tenay keeps repeating that we hadn't seen this sadistic side of Abyss for years. Irritating bastard. Hogan comes out to berate him and asks him what the hell's wrong with him, and Abyss points to him and says "YOU!" and on that note we end this show.

Wrestling Counter: 25 minutes.

The Score: 3 for 9: After a stellar Impact and a solid PPV, TNA is back to producing shit with this show. The first half was mildly entertaining but that went down the shitter rather quickly. We had 7 matches lasting 25 minutes, which meant every match was either rushed or just there for angle advancement. The less I say about the main event the better. I have no interest in Abyss's character, his turns are as inconsequential as Kane's, and he's a far less interesting character. TNA continue to sell their talent down the river with poor storytelling, and not giving the right people the time or the opportunity to shine through ringwork. Oh well, I guess I'm stupid for expecting more despite having watched this company for years.

Anyone find it interesting that Abyss did Dreamer's arm straight out pose and used Dreamers weapon of choice, a kendo stick. Anyone think that Tommy Dreamer is gonna be the voice behind Abyss?

Has a three-way match EVER ended in a triple countout? That's the worst possible finish they could have come up with.

So did they run out of things for Abyss to do and decide to do a hasty, nonsensical heel turn? I guess it beats him doing an Evad Sullivan impression. But you know, if the endgame is to build towards Abyss challenging for the title, it might be a better idea to have the champion ON THE SHOW instead of having him antagonize Hulk Hogan.

The sad thing is, before the Hogan/Bischoff regime, Samoa Joe/Hernandez could have been an awesome PPV match. Instead, it's a throwaway Impact match that gets less time than Lacey Von Erich's match. Sigh...

They had too much going on with Dreamer, I thought. First he was applauding Jay Lethal, then Tazz mentioned he wasn't returning his calls, then the Abyss gesture. Who's he supposed to be feuding against? I know they're going for INTRIGUE~ but it would be better in smaller, more focussed doses.

I didn't even know that countout was a possible finish in a three-way match. Triple countout was way over the top, but in sync with the trend of this show, where the matches were just vehicles to push the angles.

I didn't catch if this match was supposed to be a triple threat or an elimination match, but generally triple threat matches are under no-DQ, no-COR rules.

Lethal pinned Wolfe after a wheelbarrow neckbreaker. That used to be Eric Young's move. I LOVE that move.

Perhaps, but how many times have we seen #1 contender matches end in some screwy finish to set up a 3 (or in this case 4) way match later? Lousy as the idea may be, I give it points for originality. No worse than a double pin or double DQ, IMO. But why not just say you are doing a 4 way (even if it is too close to the recent WWE PPV) and have 3 qualifying matches ?

It happens about as often as an eight man cage match ends in a disqualification.

The Lethal/Flair segment was one of the funniest things wrestling-related that I've seen in ages. I was literally laughing out loud when Lethal elbow-dropped his jacket.

Not as good as the last few weeks but not completely terrible. I absolutely don't like the weird camera angles in the back during the interviews (it seems like it's just out of place - the show is post-produced and crisp then they cut backstage to a single-shot, shoot type of camera angle and it throws off the rhythm of the show). The interviewer/cameraman needs to go too. Isn't Christy Hemme making an absurd amount of money? What about So Cal Val? You have them on contract and cut people like Roxxi?

Not that I *want* to see the belts on the Band, but if the tag belts were supposedly being defended with Freebird rules, then why did Hall not being there mean they can't defend the belts? Gah - just SHUT UP. We'll get a MCMG title match without the Band. Don't give them ideas!

Does fan voting even count for the top ten rankings anymore? I haven't seen them put over being able to vote?

Can Desmond Wolfe please go back somewhere were he won't be used as a whipping boy? How different it's been since he debuted against Angle. I'm assuming that the angle tonight is going to lead to Wolfe feuding with Flair's group but giving TNA's history with Wolfe's booking, I think we all know how that will go.

While I agree with everyone else about the Lethal/Flair confrontation, I was kind of thinking that it just went on too long too. Much like the last Monday night show where he first did the impression, I think it was a fun little exposition that doesn't really do anything in the long run. Still, elbow dropping the coat was awesome.

As much as I have no desire to see the eventual Hogan vs. Abyss and Lethal vs. Flair matches, it seems as if the past few weeks have been all about reversing everything that Hogan and Bischoff have done since January 4th. If it means admitting the mistake of hiring them and letting them go after the year is done, I'll gladly suffer through "Hogan's Last Hurrah" with Abyss.

The Knockout's match was a waste. It's clear they want to shrink down the division to The Beautiful People + Angelina (I like Love but mix it up a bit - you can only take so much of the same ol' matches between her and Rayne).

I don't know but I've just never been able to get into the Abyss character. Maybe I just don't like the hardcore style but he's just always been bland to me.

Not that this main event was as good as the main event on Raw but it was telling that they both ended in a similar fashion with sports entertainment non-finishes. TNA needs to work on their pacing too - that was a horrible way to end the show. It just seemed to cut off (did the commentators even mention anything about signing-off?)

If there's one thing I can't blame Russo for it's the booking of Desmond Wolfe the past few months. Russo pushed the guy to the moon his first few months in TNA. Since Hogan and Bischoff came in he's been fubar'd. The Abyss feud was hideous and made him look like a joke. He beat Jeff Hardy a few weeks ago (not clean obviously), and gave me some hope that they do something with him. At least we'll get another Angle-Wolfe match at the next ppv with them ranked 9th and tenth in the rankings. I really thought that Nash and Young should have dropped the titles to MCMG instead of having it stripped. The MCMG haven't been on Impact in nearly a month btw. The Flair-Lethal stuff was absolutely hysterical. Would have liked to have seen The Lethal-Wolfe and Hernandez-Joe matches get more time. Morgan has really developed into a really great heel. I had no interest in a Jarrett-Sting-Feud in 2000 and even less in 2010. They both should be feuding and putting over younger guys.Sting does look much better without the face paint at this stage.Where was RVD? They could have at least had him cut a promo before the Main Event. The Abyss turn came out of nowhere except for some foreshadowing when he sent Chelsea away. It was good to see him go back to being The Monster Abyss and if the end game was another feud with Hardy or a feud with Anderson he'd be fine since the end game is with Hogan wrestling Abyss he's fucked. I think Raven is gonna end up being the master mind behind Abyss like Mitchell was in the past.
