The USC football program will receive a two-year postseason ban, a reduction in scholarships and a forfeiture of wins from at least the 2004 season when the NCAA releases its sanctions on Thursday, a source told ESPN's Shelley Smith.
The Los Angeles Times reported the NCAA sanctions include the loss of more than 20 scholarships.
ESPN The Magazine's Bruce Feldman confirmed the two-year postseason ban and a reduction in scholarships from a second USC source.
So USC gets to spend its next two bowl seasons at home?
Truly, this couldn't have happened to a nicer guy than Lane Kiffin.
And BOOM goes the dynamite. I wonder if Lane being the coach helped the decision to go through since the NCAA and him never see eye to eye. Well, this went from one of the best jobs in America to the worst for the next two years. Yeah, they can play spoiler, but its meaningless when they are sitting at home watching everyone else play in the winter. I would say the recruiting class for next year is going to look thin. I guess Pete Carroll saw the writing on the wall. I am thinking the 2004 championship will now be stripped as well. I couldn't believe the NCAA actually grew a pair and did this.
Originally posted by DrDirtHow bad must the report be for USC to get this kind of penalty? Other schools probably would have received the death penalty.
They won't give any school the death penalty again. Alabama would've gotten it for multiple violations, and they avoided it. Like Wade said, the scholarship penalty (which I heard was 20, not 30) is going to probably be a crippler as it is.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you... At last, there will be justice for the real national champions of 2004, the Auburn Tigers.
As far as USC is concerned, may they suffer long after the effects of this well-deserved punishment have passed. They certainly deserve it.
smark/net attack Advisory System Status is: Elevated (Holds; June 18, 2006) While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.
Officially it is four years probation, vacate all games Bush played in starting December 04, two year bowl ban and 30 scholarships over three years. Came very close to a full TV ban and cited "lack of institutional control" so this is as mean as they're gonna ever get from now on I'd say.
Ok, so I have to ask this question is the AD of USC still there from this time period and if so will he be there tomorrow? I think the NCAA should have gone one step further and given a 25 year ban on Peter Carroll to coach in the NCAA. That is the only way its going to stop these violations. I feel the same way about Calipari since he can jump from one school to another without consequence. The real pair of balls will be grown when they go after individuals as well as the organization. The fact they thought about throwing them off TV makes me think there is something more then just Reggie Bush at play here. Vince Young already said he doesn't want the Heisman, so is it officially vacated or does it go to Leinhert.
The Heisman is a seperate deal, they make their own decisions. Here's some more detail
"COI will issue a response to appeals committee Case centered on agent and amateurism violations involving Centered on student athlete 1: Reggie Bush, and student athlete 2 OJ Mayo Violations spanned 4 yrs Beginning Dec. 04, ended with OJ Mayo’s departure from campus after 07-08 bball season Reggie Bush was employed by sports marketer with knowledge of USC USC worked through another individual to land OJ Mayo during his recruitment even though rep. had already committed infractions Reggie Bush violations: received a vehicle, rent free home for parents, airline tickets, hotel room, cash, limo, furniture, appliance. From what I understand, the way it's stated is they can't sign more than 15 new recruits in any of those three years and are limited to 75 total scholarships. So if they have 85 players today and lose say 15 to graduation or transfer, they can only sign five guys in the next class to hit the 75 max. Or if they lost like 30 kids to get from 85 down to 55, they could only sign 15 to get back up to 70.

I really do find it unfortunate that the kids that committed to USC are going to be the ones that end up suffering from the actions of Pete Carroll, Reggie Bush, Tim Floyd, and OJ Mayo, all of whom aren't at the university anymore and all of whom will get off relatively scot free, save for a hit on their reputations (which I'm sure they'll cry into their next big contracts over). I can appreciate punishing the USC revenue source, but I can't condone punishing the kids for something one of their predecessors did.
Really, I'd rail about it some more, but I'm still in fits of laughter over this happening to Lane Kiffin. BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Lane's an idiot. Whether he knew this was coming or not, he looks foolish for taking the job either way, because there was no reason for him to leave Tennessee in the lurch the way he did. And I feel horrible for his father - a man who I have nothing but respect for - because he's now collateral damage in a fiasco that's just gotten way worse than it was initially.
The smartest thing the Kiffins could do is flee now while they still have the chance.

Let's do a real breakdown of the roster numbers. USCfootball has them with 91 players(probably includes walk ons, I've heard from USC fans that they have 79 scholarship players).
22 are listed as seniors and gone after this year, bringing them(assuming no transfers or anyone leaves early) to 69 so they can sign 6. And have to hope to not miss on any of those kids.
The next year they have 32 juniors that will be gone, so down to 43, then add in 15 new signees to get back to 58.
Year three, 21 more players leave, 15 more come in to put them at 52 total players.
This would be a BEST case scenario where no one leaves early or transfers or drops out or gets injured, etc and also includes possibly 6-12 walk-ons.

They need to find kids that are really good at baseball. Jake Locker got a $300k contract from the Angels, so technically speaking he is a walk-on at Washington this season.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you... wmatistic, I don't think the sanctions limit them as far as having players walk on (while paying their own way) are concerned. So I still expect to see a roster in the 80s in the years to come, only it's going to be loaded with players from campus intramural teams.

You are correct, they can take as many walk-ons as they want, I was only trying to point out how devastating this will be to their scholarship players(I don't know who the walkons are so I couldn't break them out by year).
Realistically they're looking at possibly 40 or so kids on scholarship when the penalty ends, and with the rule that you can't actually sign more than 25 a year, it'll take a couple years beyond that before they field a team of full 85 kids on ships. Likely to not be the best of the best kids that they were getting too. It could be a decade before they recover from this.

Wha?
the former women's tennis student-athlete made 123 unauthorized long distance phone calls to her home country at a cost of over $7,000 during a two-plus year period from November 2006 to March 2009. The institution finally detected the violations on April 30, 2009. That the calls were undetected for so long constitutes an obvious failure to monitor institutional phone records and expenses.

The scholarships are the long term damage, as it will weaken the team in the future, and when they finally can recruit fully, they won't be as attractive an option. But, here is a question: If you were a fan mired in the mediocrity that USC had descended to in the 90's, would you have signed for 10 dominant, yet dirty, years while having to have several down to mediocre years after you are caught? Truthfully, I'd take the decade of dominance and let the chips fall as they may.

I don't see a problem with stripping them of the title since the NCAA is saying they forfeited those games as of now. So, you will have a national champion that is 0-13. The AP is just a joke anymore when it comes to sports. I wonder exactly what they are going to appeal? Is it the loss of games or the scholarships or the bowl games? Also, how long is the appeal process, could the NCAA just avoid it like they did with this investigation for the next four years? Still a lot of questions left unanswered.
