Pretty good PPV overall, unless you count the highway robbery of a victory from Jason Brilz.

Evans beat down Rampage and made him look weak. No other way to describe it really.

Bisping bounces back after getting his ass handed to him courtesy of Wanderlei Silva at UFC 110. Still undecided if he'll ever win a belt or not, seems to be tough, but then looks suspect when really challenged.

But to me, the upset of the night was Diego Sanchez getting manhandled by John Hathaway. He was punching him at will.
I've never seen Diego look so vulnerable in a fight before.

Just a few weeks away from UFC 115 with Lidell vs Franklin.

You could tell Evans went into the prevent defense after that big shot on Rampage in the first round, and continued that strategy into the second. Jackson finally caught up to him in the third but it was too late, he was already down two rounds. Man, I REALLY wish a title had been at stake so we could've seen a fourth or fifth round....a decision finish was pretty predictable. Shogun is going to wreck Evans, btw.

Diego is a guy who puts so much stock in his mental preparation that I wonder if that decimation at BJ Penn's hands broke him down on some level. Diego had lost before, but he had never been brutalized the way that he did in the Penn fight. This isn't to take away from Hathaway, who proved himself to be for real and will probably get a big step up in competition for his next fight. If Paulo Thiago wins his next match, how about Thiago/Hathaway in a no. 1 contender's fight?

Bisping will never win a belt. He's a solid fighter but in no way in the upper class of the 185-pound division.

I was among the people crying robbery after Brilz/Rogerio, but after a minute to cool off, I changed my mind. Second round, definitively, belonged to Brilz; third round, not quite as much but still fairly definitively belonged to Rogerio, so it comes down to the first--and the first was so close as to go either way, I think. I would have been happy with a draw, but it was close enough a round that, in the 10-point system, I don't think the result is too obscene. I doubt Brilz can be too upset, either--he was a complete and total nobody seen as a last-minute lamb to the slaughter, and now Dana is twitter-fellating him. He's got a future.

On that similar note, tough few months for Luiz Cane as he welcomes another tough guy into the UFC chinfirst. If he's really lucky, he'll have his next comeback fight just in time for Mousasi to join up.

Bisping has a tendency to fail against fighters who test him. His recovery against Denis Kang is pretty much the only exception--but then, that was Kang, whose fighting instinct operates like a lightswitch. The entirety of the fight, myself and the folks around me were screaming at Miller to go to his strengths and try to take the fight to the ground--and he waited until halfway through the third damn round to commit to trying to do it. I'd like to see Bisping against Alan Belcher or Yushin Okami--someone who isn't as high up as a Henderson or Wanderlei or Marquardt, but who knows and uses their strengths. We'd learn a lot more about him that way.

Todd Duffee...man, I'm still laughing.

I had figured the issue in the fight would be whether or not Rashad being leaps and bounds smarter as a fighter would be enough to overcome Rampage's physical advantage, and it very emphatically was. I'm finding the endless internet rage over Rashad's performance both baffling and hilarious--apparently you're not actually allowed to look great by knocking someone down with your first punch and then easily neutralizing almost all of their offense if you do it with clinching and takedowns. It's always amazing when people get so emotionally invested in a fight that, unless someone gets knocked clean out, they refuse to accept an outcome.

Ah, well. Do Rampage/Machida to see if Jackson can catch him with a punch, too, and in the meantime, Rashad gets a crack at Shogun. It'll be interesting--Rashad has a better chance than most folks give him credit for, but he's a decided underdog, no doubt. Whatever the case, if he wins, he's probably going to do it in such a way as to piss people off.

I'd argue that the UFC doesn't want to match Bisping against the likes of Belcher or Okami since he'd surely lose. It's one thing if he's losing to Evans/Henderson/Silva, but if he starts losing to second-tier guys as well, it'll kill his drawing card potential in the U.K.

I dunno--they were initially shooting for Bisping/Marquardt, who is up there but isn't nearly as big a name as the top-tier guys they've thrown him to thus far. The more they expand into the UK and get guys like Hardy, Hathaway, Pearson et al. who can represent the country, the less they need to protect Bisping.

Either way, it'll be interesting to see what they do with him next.

Aye, I think people tend to overestimate the importance of Bisping to the UFC in Britain. He's helped them grow a little, and he's worth having on cards when they come to the UK, but it's still a minority sport here and they've got other British guys they can promote now. I kinda laugh when I hear people say they need to protect Bisping to avoid losing British fans. It's not like we aren't aware of his limitations at this stage. They're kind of obvious.

Agreed on Brilz/Rogerio. Brilz had the most decisive round in the second but Diet Nog won the third and the first was even. Of course this *again* raises my pet gripe of 10-9 covering far to great a multitude of sins, but they don't seem set to change that any time soon.

Duffee v Russow was fantastic. Russow basically spent two and a bit rounds wearing down Duffee's fists with his face and torso before knocking him out with his only meaningful shot of the fight. More than a little fortunate, highly unexpected and completely hilarious.

Rashad kinda dominated Rampage out there. Shogun v Rashad should be fun, and I'd second the motion for Rampage v Machida.

That would be the "away goals" rule. As Slovenia scored one in first leg and the Russians didn't get one in second leg, that broke the tie in favour of Slovenia.
