DDP gets no love. The main created one of the best finishers done. He also had great matches with Raven, Savage and others in WCW. It was Vince being a dumb ass jobbing him out to Taker early that killed his WWE career instead making him a real threat. Taker doesn't even need that win. It was typical Vince's ego being out of control after he won the Monday Night War then wondered where the audience went to in 2003-2004. DDP should get, deserves to get in and if he wasn't friends with Erich, he would be viewed like Foley, Eddie and other people who won the Big One and didn't have the look, but had the desire.
Originally posted by StingArmyOh I agree that he was over, especially after he was catapulted into the main event picture. But you know who else is/was ridiculously over and can make an arena full of people mimic his gimmick? R-Truth. And Scotty 2 Hotty. And The Godfather. But if the writers suddenly put one of them into a feud for a world championship, don't you think it would seem a bit forced?
I hear what you're saying, but I think the situation between DDP and those you mentioned is still different.
For people like R-Truth, Scotty, Godfather, Mr. Kennedy, et. al, fans mimic them, I think, more for the fact that their gestures are simply imitable; not to express any particular connections to the wrestler. It's kind of just part of the show. People aren't cheering for The Worm or the Hooooooo Train during the match, but really just at the time of the spot.
In contrast, people would be putting up Diamond Cutter hands before, during and after DDP's match—and also whenever they would pan the crowd. That's where I see the difference.
(As an aside, I'd just like to say I think it's really stupid and psychologically unsound when heels have catchphrases the crowd joins in on, like Mr. Kennedy or The Miz—those seem forced, inorganic and are just repeated enough times so people catch on. I mean, The Rock was so, so smart when he'd say it isn't singalong with him; it wasn't and for a heel it shouldn't be.)
Oh Man. If you get into that, there's another can of worms. If they treated DDP like a clown when they had him, no way Vince picks him, unless it's a mean joke or a bad bet
Lex, before he dies and the rest of the Horseman are my picks. Goldberg, why not? Boring and Bullshit. I don't even care to go to Altanta. And it's so the wrestling business that I bent over backwards to make sure that others and I were there for Flair's HOF and last match
Now we can go see him be a washed up idiot for free. I expected Cactus to do that, but not Flair. Point is, wait until HHH is in charge and Nash and Hall get in. Da Dead Guy

Demonstrations are a drag. Besides, we're much too high

Nash and Hall were key figures in The NWO so yeah they belong in the Hall of Fame. I dunno why you were surprised that Flair's retirement didn't take. It was Vince that came to him at WM23 and told him it's time to wind down. Flair needs money no question but I think even if he was in better shape financally that he'd still want to be in the spotlight and get in the ring. Foley coming out of retirement was more surprising to me than Flair getting back in the ring. That is how little I bought into Flair's retirement in '08. I would say the vast majority of the last fifteen years of Flair's career hasn't been pretty and downright ugly at many times. Great send off though but you know I don't think he wanted a send off.

As much as some people inside and outside the business deny or hate to admit it, DDP, like Brutus Beefcake, was over—and not because of who he was friends with. (And yes, Bruti was over without Hogan.)

These are obviously more extreme examples than DDP's situation but I think the logic still applies. I probably didn't do a good job making my point originally. I guess what I was trying to say is that after dwelling in the mid-card for seemingly forever, holding arm wrestling challenges and being completely upstaged by Kimberly, I didn't understand why he suddenly became a main eventer. I mean, we're talking about being retired by the f'n Booty Man one year and then headlining shows with the nWo less than 12 months later. Pretty rapid ascension, no?
Maybe it was the rub he got from his old buddy Scott Hall? Or maybe it was just because he came up with the Diamond Cutter right after Stone Cold started popularizing the Stunner. Who knows, I just thought it was peculiar how a veteran who was a low-level champion at best and a JTTS at worst suddenly became the company's top face.

It helps to be friends with the executive producer (see Miller, Ernest and Oono, Sonny).

He came up with The Diamond cutter before Austin was even in The WWE. I recall him using it back in '95 and he might have used it even earlier than that.
Someone has got to have this by now. I've tried some of the dirt websites out there (figuring they would have to have it up by now) and so far, no dice. Is it sad that this and the Foley promo are the only thing that I want to see of RAW?
