Welcome home, men of the 2nd Bn, 127th Infantry, 32d "Red Arrow" Brigade, WI Army National Guard! Job well done in Iraq!

If Linda McMahon wins the Republican primary for Chris Dodd's US Senate seat from Connecticut, the favorite to oppose her on the Democrats' side could be sinking fast.

Thanks to his own mouth.

An article in Monday's The New York Times says that Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal never served in Vietnam, despite his speeches to the contrary. The Times says Blumenthal is often either deliberately foggy in his speeches, or outright claims to have served as a Marine in Vietnam...when in fact, he used three student deferments and joined the US Marine Corps Reserve in 1970, thus avoiding going to Southeast Asia.

Naturally, Blumenthal has issued a sort of mea culpa, but still tried to crack on those who questioned his service.

And apparently a lot of this stuff was dug up by...drum roll please...Linda's campaign.

Wonder if this'll cause the Dems to lessen their support of the guy they were hoping would succeed Dodd...can't hurt Linda much. (Can it?)

Maybe Blumenthal can get together with former Blue Jays manager Tim Johnson and exchange stories about how they combined to annihilate Charlie.

The sad thing is he probably didn't need to lie about serving in order to get where he is now. So much of his success as AG had nothing to do with fighting in Vietnam that it's basically immaterial. Dickie B was expected to mop the floor with whoever the Republicans nominated, but it's been getting closer lately.

UPDATE!

Linda has won the CT GOP party endorsement for the Senate. However, her Republican opponent, former Congressman Robert Simmons, says he'll fight on until the August 10th primary.

(And apparently a fella named Peter Schiff, who didn't get the 15% of votes at the Connecticut GOP convention necessary to get on the ballot, says he'll petition his way on there.)

Looks like Linda's on her way to the nomination. Vince and the family even showed up with her last night.

The way this political season looks to be shaking out, getting the endorsement of the party might not be worth much in a primary. And, Simmons would be crazy to drop out of the race before the primary, as Blumenthal is likely to take aim at McMahon and by extension her family's personal and business dealings, so Simmons might be able to slide into a primary victory by letting the Dems do the dirty work for him.

What about Chris Dodd? This is his seat Linda is going after? Boy this will get good if it comes down to those two come Nov.

Dodd a few months ago announced his retirement to spend time with his family, thus allowing Blumenthal to run for the Senate seat as a 'safe' Democrat.

Rob Simmons is suspending his campaign, essentially clearing the field for Linda McMahon to win the GOP primary and run against Blumenthal (or whomever takes his place if he drops out).

Good in the sense that Linda has the right people on her side. You sure ain't going to hear Hannity ask about Benoit

I've liked Linda all along for the (R) side. But who knew that (except for he is a lawyer and also has a reputation to go belly-up when he gets hit hard) the idiot would crow to Veterans, lying about Vietnam

Linda = WWE, death, rape, murder, addiction, multiple felonies, Simmons 10 Questions, etc

Blumenthal = lied about military service

There is one sacred cow left and that's lying about military service. The worst criminal analogy of a human you can think of doesn't trump that

I'd like to think that this "amazing discovery" was planned, but knowing how Vince books, it was probably dumb luck. "Get this story out now" - yes Linda's campaign is / was are behind it, so what - in October, no one will remember their participation when Linda sits in front of Hannity and pimps a WWE produced hit piece on a lying skunk..."I think his words speak for themselves, Sean"

"Katie Vick" vs. "When we returned from Vietnam, I remember the taunts, the verbal and even physical abuse we encountered"

The Godfather would have been weird if The Don arranged for Kay to be "Senata Corleone. President Corleone". But here we go

It could be considered the sign of an immature campaign though. They had to have been piling up opposition research on Dodd coming into this campaign, and that is useless now. They find something on Blumenthal, and they leak it to get the race to tighten up. Now, if this was an experienced campaign, you hold this sort of information in your back pocket until it is of the utmost value, which would be leaking it in October. You leak it now, you make the race close in May, but give Blumenthal 5 months to go through the damage control phase. You use this as an October surprise, you get the momentum going in your favor building up to election day, and you might be able to 'steal' the election.

So, if Linda suddenly lost her mind and raped an infant before murdering it, that wouldn't be as bad as this Blumenthal guy stumbling over some words? Given that video has already come out showing Blumenthal specifically what exactly his military record was earlier in the very same speech, I'd say this story is overblown.

It stands to reason that if you live in Connecticut and watch FOX News, you're voting for McMahon anyway.

Look the trends - Quinnipac trends left anyway, and they use registered voters. They were at 41% in January, 33 in March and 25 now. Rasmussen, who trends right and uses what they call likely voters, had it at 24 in January, 29 in March, 20 in April, 13 a couple weeks ago and just 3 this week.

So the race isn't over yet.

The pollster.com average (which aggregates several different polls) shows it at Blumenthal +15 as of today.
