Hugo Weaving is the gift that keeps on giving for nerds.

Red Skull Officially Cast - Movie News at IGN

May 4, 2010 - Marvel Studios announced today that Hugo Weaving has been cast to star as Johann Schmidt aka the Red Skull in the studio's highly anticipated movie Captain America: The First Avenger opposite Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell.

In the early comics, Johann Schmidt was drafted into loyal service of The Third Reich and renamed "The Red Skull". The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. Joe Johnston will direct the film penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige will produce Captain America: The First Avenger. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Louis D'Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Captain America: The First Avenger will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Weaving was last seen in The Wolfman and his voice is very recognizable as Megatron from Transformers and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as well as Noah the Elder from Happy Feet. His other film credits include starring in V for Vendetta, The Matrix franchise, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Is there any other actor in Hollywood with as much nerd cred as Hugo Weaving right now? His turn as the Red Skull should be more than enough reason to catch the new Cap movie.

Chris Evans, who will be making his 5th superhero movie?

(FF 1 and 2, Cap, Losers and Scott Pilgrim)

Nice cost-saving move for the studio, since Weaving's head already looks weirdly shaped.

I don't think anyone involved with the FF movies has any cred with comic nerds. Well, except for Jessica Alba, but that's for other reasons.

Chiklis might also, especially since he is doing the con tour.

Plus TF fans went in an outrage when he was casted as the voice of Megatron, while the original voice was sitting right there waiting to be called up.

And to be honest, his voice doesn't add anything other than "ooh big name"

He was cast as Megatron, because Frank Welker can't do the voice anymore due to illness or thats the rumor. I think Welker has been doing other voices for the TF franchise either in video games or in the movies. The real shame of it is Chris Ladd passing away who was the voice of Starscream and Cobra Commander. He has been sorely missed in all of the live action movies. Having nerd cred doesn't mean how many comic book films you are in which at this time almost every actor or actress is going to end up being in one. Its all about how many successful dork franchises you have been in as well as how big the part was. Captain of the Enterpise and leader of the X-Men is going to damn near trump any other dork cred out there. The Shakespeare stuff helps too since those are mostly fantasy stories anyway. The only thing close is probably Christopher Lee who was Dracula, a Sith Lord and Saurman. He needs to be a named comic book character or be the next Trek villain to top Stewart. Lee may go down as probably the greatest character actor villain of all time.

Hugo wouldn't even need much makeup. Then again, I said the same thing about Willem Dafoe as the Goblin, and then they stuck him in that awful helmet.

I take it you've never seen this?

Christopher Lee earns his 'dork cred' not just from LOTR, Starwars, and Dracula. His work on many Hammer Films where he played, not only Dracula, but Sherlock Holmes and Rasputin. He was in Julius Caesar with Chuck Heston. Return To Witch Mountain. Tim Burton uses him all the time. He was The Man With The Golden Gun. He was Death in Terry Pratchett's Colour Of Magic. The Wicker Man!

Christopher Lee is the preeminent 'dork cred' actor.

(Can we change that to 'geek'?)

Didn't he play Watson to Peter Cushing's Holmes? I believe he also played Frankenstein's monster and The Mummy for Hammer. When you add it up, the guy has an amazing legacy, especially among geeks like me.

Sing this special song. It's just for you.
How about Captain of the Enterprise, time traveler, AND savior of errant Cleveland Indians? BAKULA.

Welker simply said "I don't know." when asked why he wasn't Megatron. The only way to right this karmically is to have Welker play Agent Smith in a Matrix animated movie.

FYI producers: Just shave and paint Weaving. Don't get cute with CGI or a mask (as Kentish mentioned)

Weaving should be wearing a mask in the film. In the comics, the Red Skull's was originally masked, and I have no doubt that Hollywood's costume guys can put together a truly tremendous-looking mask for him to wear. Of course, directors and producers are notoriously allergic to having their leading men try to emote through a hood, so we'll see what happens.

So were Bullseye and the Green Goblin. I have little faith in the art direction departments of the world when it comes to villains. Marvel Studios didn't exactly do themselves any favors by making Whiplash V2 into the Iron Monger with whips.
