So we all remember the attempted car bombing in Times Square, right? Well, we caught him ( and just in time, too (news.bbc.co.uk)).
Originally posted by BBCFaisal Shahzad was on a Dubai-bound plane at JFK airport on Monday that was turned back as it taxied for take-off.
According to court papers, Mr Shahzad has admitted his role in Saturday's attempted attack and said he received training in bomb-making in Pakistan.
The Pakistan-born US citizen has been charged with terrorism-related crimes.
Shahzad's been singing like Justin Bieber since getting locked up, telling the authorities about his training and such, both before and after being read his Miranda rights, and he was caught in a little over two days (ctpost.com)...

But yeah, funny thing about those Miranda rights (cbsnews.com) (note Shahzad's a naturalized citizen)...
Originally posted by CBS NewsSen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said reading Shahzad his Miranda rights would be a "mistake."
...McCain, echoing comments he's made in previous national security situations, said on a radio program this morning that "obviously that would be a serious mistake (to Mirandize Shahzad)... at least until we find out as much information we have," the Hill reports.
"Don't give this guy his Miranda rights until we find out what it's all about," McCain added.
...Rep. Peter King (N.Y.), the top Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, is also asking whether Attorney General Eric Holder discussed the treatment of Shahzad with the intelligence community before deciding to arrest him on criminal charges, Politico reports.
"If they believe they got enough from him, how much more should they get? Did they Mirandize him? I know he's an American citizen but still," King said.
King acknowledged that the case against Shahzad is different since, unlike Abdulmutallab, he is an American citizen and most of his alleged attempted efforts to detonate a bomb appear to have taken place in the United States.
"That said, before there's a rush to indict him, I think they should make an effort to figure out what is the best venue for him," King said.
(Emphasis mine.)
Yeah, good luck trying to earn those political points, guys. I suppose it'd be too much to praise law enforcement and the job they did, and, oh, I don't know, acknowledge that part of what makes this country great is that it's a nation of laws or something like that. I'm guessing they wouldn't be quite so critical if this wasn't an election year, McCain wasn't getting primaried from the right, or if this was a Republican regime. Certainly doesn't make me feel better about my civil liberties.

Wait, don't you have the Miranda Rights whether or not they are read to you, and if you aren't made aware of them, you basically will get acquitted when you go to trial?
Oh wait, that's assuming that there'd ever BE a trial. Aren't we still holding terror suspects indefinitely?

Not to derail your sarcasm but he is a US citizen and this happened here.
My feeling is cover all of your bases like doing Miranda Rights and such, because you don't know where this is going to be held. The GOP is such a bitter group of fucks that even when we get a win against the terrorist there has to be a problem, because Obama and friends don't know what they are doing. If this was under Bush, they would hold a parade the next day for those guys with G.W. as the main attraction. Give the cops their due and move on. Its stuff like this that make the GOP look worse as they head into the elections.

Which means treason needs to be the main charge.
Is it treason or sedition? I know under wartime conditions it's treason, so does this fall under that? I agree he should be toast if guilty.
I swear to goodness the people in charge of running our country canNOT be this dumb... can they???
If you don't Mirandize someone after you detain him, you risk not being able to use any of the information that person provides you to convict him. Period. There is virtually no wiggle room. What on earth were McCain and King thinking?

I believe what they're thinking is that we should be taking the phrase "the war on terror" literally, and that it's somehow violating that principle to give accused terrorists a trial. So it's not so much the Mirandizing per se that bothers them, but the fact that he's being classified as a criminal rather than, I guess, a prisoner of war.
It's really sad to see how McCain seems to be abandoning his principles. I'm a liberal, but he always seemed to be a guy I had to respect.

"Are there any other bombs we need to know about?" is a very different Miranda exception than an 8 hour interview session. Let's make sure we are talking about excepting Miranda for very limited periods of time during immediate threat (such as during a search of a suspected suicide bomber) instead of during police interrogations after a suspect is safely stored at the precinct.
Yeah, seriously. That Eric Holder character seems to know the NAMES of the Miranda exceptions but sure isn't displaying any knowledge of what those names actually mean.
