I understand the Rams' frustration, but who knew the QBs would drop that far either. They re-building an entire team and Shu with McCoy or Clausen would have helped. The real problem in that pick is there is no difference between Bradford and Clausen. I am not sold on Bradford on being an NFL QB, because the Rams' O-Line sucks and he has already proven to be injury prone. I like Colt, a lot and I do expect the Browns to take him. Clausen's problem is that he was a Notre Dame QB on a team where the defense let them down 100% of the time. If he had beaten a USC or gone to another bowl game and put up the numbers like he did against Hawaii last year, he would have gone first. I am guessing Clausen will be picked by either the SeaHawks or Vikings. The Vikings have to get over Favre as a long term investment. He is going to be there one more year and if Childres had any balls, he would have gotten a commitment from him before the draft. Jarvis is not their answer at QB.
The Teabow thing just annoys me. Yeah, he is a winner, but how many winners do we see in the QB position in college who never pan out? A lot. I get the media darling thing even though the New York crowd deemed his abilities as less then spectacular. Of course, they boo everything which makes no sense, but its the same crowd who probably frequented ECW. Shocked they didn't boo the Make A Wish kid. Teabow to me is all hype. He will work hard thats a given, but if he tries to run down some of those DE especially Merriman, he will get knocked the fuck out.
Originally posted by StaggerLeeThe morons on the local ESPN radio show were saying there's a ton of backlash against the Bradford pick, claiming people were mad because the Rams coul d have taken Suh and picked. Up Clausen or McCoy with the 33rd pick.
Uh...why are they morons for saying that? Cause I agree, Suh was a smarter pick and they still could have had one of two QB's that I have more faith in than Bradford.
They could be morons who're right. Suh at #1, one of the other QBs later. St. Louis isn't a quarterback away from contending, they need more pieces and Suh or McCoy would've been a great start.

Looking at the package of picks so far, I'm pretty happy with the identity the Browns are coming out with. An improved secondary, power offense, and a QB to develop who doesn't have to start right away. The big 'if' will be if the players can stay healthy as they've had some health issues (to put it lightly).

I still think Colt may turn out to be the best QB from this draft, so that was a steal getting him so late IMO.
The Steelers had a rather unimpressive second and third round. I can't believe they passed on Tate and Shipley as well as not trading up to get a CB or Tony Gearhart. They have 3 picks in the fifth round which they probably have used to trade up.
Due to a hectic travel schedule I wasn't able to watch much of the draft, but looking at the Seahawks picks, I'm pretty pleased so far. Guess Pete's Tweets haven't been too much of a distraction yet . . .

As for the Raiders draft, it has been refreshingly normal for once. There were players I liked better in each round, but I am happy with the way they have addressed their needs.

Perhaps no one told Al the draft started early this year?

"Unimpressive" would be a compliment in my eyes. What awful picks. And I think they could have traded down to get Pouncey in the first round.
And all those 5th round picks just sitting there unused for the first 3 rounds. You gotta be kidding me.

And now he's a gigantic Panther. I thought our backup did a fine job in the face of the Delhomme collapse, and I'm surprised at the talk that Clausen could start soon. Fox said the Panther offense was like the Notre Dame system, and that doesn't sound entirely like a good thing. Still we got a name player, and that brings greater attention.

I really like what the Pats have been doing. I do hope they find a way to get a legit running back before the season starts. I'm sick of the Maroney/Morris combo, and they need some kind of back to take the pressure off of Brady.
The Notre Dame offense is a good thing, it was their defense and special teams that sucked. He is going to be throwing long balls to Steve Smith all season.

This frustrates me to no end as a Pats fan. Micheal Lombardi said this on a podcast. The spread offense only works if you have a legitimate back to be afraid of. No one is afraid of Maroney/Morris/Faulk. And I don't see any kind of back out there that can fill that need.
On topic, we had a fantastic draft and we are set up very nicely for the next few years too. Yay, Bill.

Well. They brought back McFadden (it's alumni year). So they got a starting corner in the 5th round. 3rd round picks really aren't that much more likely to stick than 5th round picks so there's nothing necessarily wrong with carpetbombing your roster with draft picks and hoping some stick, rather than moving up a few spots in the 3rd round just to do it.
If the WR is the Mike Wallace clone he's been touted as then that will help offset the loss of Holmes.

To expound on what RecklessEric said, they'll have two Round 1 and two Round 2 selections in 2011. Awesome.
As for the Packers...I'm posting this from the visitors' locker room @ Lambeau Field. (It's where they set us TV folks up for live draft reports.) First in, last out. Figures...man, I've got a ton of gear to tear down.
I like the Bulaga pick (he gets #75...shades of Forrest Gregg or Ken Ruettgers). The OL still needs some shoring up, with Clifton and Tauscher not having much time left. Plus, it makes a Packer fan from Iowa that I know extremely happy.
DE Mike Neal from Purdue seems a solid pick, but a lot of us were surprised that GM Ted Thompson traded up to snag S Morgan Burnett. There might be a question or two about him. Plus, many folks here this weekend saw it as a challenge/threat to Atari Bigby's spot in the Packer secondary. Bring on training camp!
Even more questions about TE Andrew Quarless, considering his extremely checkered past at Penn State. But Packer personnel are convinced he's changed his ways. If this one flames out, it'll be in a big fireball of a sh*tstorm.
TCU's T/G Marshall Newhouse will play both tackle AND guard, says Packer O-line coach (and former center) James Campen. Pros and cons to that: with the inevitable OL injuries, sliding guys from one position to another to fill holes has become the Pack's SOP. But what will that do to a guy's development as an NFL O-lineman?
RB James Starks is a steal in the 6th round, according to a bunch of people from Buffalo U. we hear from on Twitter.
Finally, C.J. Wilson, DE from East Carolina. He told us over the phone that he did not expect to slide this far, and he's P.O.'d about it. He intends to prove some GMs wrong this season.
All in all, I like it. Bulaga makes lots of sense, and a focus on improving the front 3 of Dom Capers' 3-4 defense is a pleasant surprise. Bonus points to the front office (who took good care of us all weekend) if the "steal" guys like Starks and Wilson pan out.
I'll be keeping an eye on Burnett and Quarless, though.
And I HATE that the Lions got Suh...but I don't blame the Rams for taking Bradford 1st. They SO set the table for it all week long prior to the draft.
One last thing...DEEP-SIX this 3-day format crap. Gimme one good weekend like the old days!
Hey, I'll happily take a versatile lineman like Newhouse. He's a fifth-rounder, I don't think anyone expects him to be a 15-year starter anyways. I'm fine with a super-sub.
Hopefully Starks becomes the good compliment to Grant that the Packers need, and Bulaga is hopefully a steal. And really, the more players to challenge Atari Bigby the better. That guy is a stiff.

This. I can't believe the Patriots had all those picks this year and didn't use even one of them on a running back. They took a punter in the fifth round, for pity's sake.
This was a fantastic weekend for USF. USF can really claim only partial credit for Jason Pierre-Paul because he only spent one year there after two at junior colleges, but he was the highest draft pick in school history nonetheless. It seems like he got drafted into an ideal situation for someone of his status - a freak athlete but with a lot of technique still to learn. I'm hoping he can live up to that draft pick, he was definitely amazing in his one year with USF.
Nate Allen in Philadelphia is awesome, and exactly what I hoped would happen. I think he's a player who is going to make an immediate impact there, he is a really strong coverage guy and he makes a ton of big plays. He seems to always be on top of the ball. I think it's a great pick by Philly and I think it's the perfect place for Allen. The Eagles in general seemed to have a great weekend, and I think this pick is a big part of the reason why.
I couldn't believe Carlton Mitchell fell all the way to the sixth round, that guy is a great athlete who needs to get better at catching the ball in traffic. He is 6'3" and has the speed to get open deep, I think he had catches of 50 yards or more in five of USF's games this season. Mel Kiper compared him to Brandon Marshall and I agree with the comparison. I'm excited to see what he does as that offense is rebuilt, I think in a few years Cleveland fans will look back and see this as a major steal.
The Rams, my dad's favorite team, pick up two USF players, cornerback Jerome Murphy and defensive end George Selvie. Murphy is fast and good in man coverage, but seems to get beat deep on play action plays a lot. Selvie is a major disappointment after his great sophomore year when people thought he could be a first round pick by the time he came out. But two years later he hasn't returned to the level he showed in the first half of the 2007 season. I'm hoping he can get over some nagging injuries and live up to his earlier hype, but who knows.
One more USF guy, middle linebacker Kion Wilson, signed a free agent contract with San Diego, and from the sounds of it he has a good chance to make the team because San Diego is looking for middle linebackers still. It's exciting having all these USF guys spread around the league.

Yeah, I love the Pierre-Paul pick on both ends. The Giants won the Super Bowl in part by throwing wave after wave of weapons-grade linemen and linebackers at opponents, and I'm sure they'll make room to get everyone in there. Besides, he doesn't have to come in and kill everyone right now, he can learn from a bunch of strong DE's.
Although I'm kind of surprised Groethe didn't get picked at all. I just remember what he did as a freshman, and injury isn't much of an excuse.

If you're the Rams organization, you have to take Sam Bradford. Especially after you've passed over Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco & Mark Sanchez over the past two drafts. Not saying that Bradford is going to set the world on fire, but they have to get a QB in there who is the face of the franchise ... and Colt McCoy, Tim Tebow or Jimmy Clausen just ain't it.
