(starting a new thread so that this doesn't turn into my monster Conan O'Brien thread that Zed became not-too-fond of)

Ben Roethlisberger was suspended for six games on Wednesday for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, the NFL announced.

When these stories first started to break, I would have never expected six games. Hell, people like Mike & Mike were saying things like, "No suspension! One-game suspension max!!" But I guess after details and such started coming out, it started looking pretty bad for Big Ben.

I should also add that the suspension could be reduced to four games for what amounts to "good behavior," and it could also be extended BEYOND six games if Roethlisberger fails to comply with the NFL's directive.

John Clayton actually pinned this one down on Monday, just in case anybody like me is keeping a running tab on NFL insiders.

Or, maybe he should get consent first.

So he's gonna be suspended for three years then? Might as well trade him right now, seriously.

Well now that ESPN has said there are trade rumors maybe it will happen. I heard quantity not quality for the picks as long as one is in the top ten. I am thinking the smart thing to do is get the best CB or OL out there. Get Golden Tate with the other 1st round pick and if McCoy or Pike is around in the 2nd round get them. No need to pay number 1 draft pick money if you can get one of those QBs later in the draft.

Ben's routine for as long as he is in the NFL.

1. Wake up
2. Don't leave home except for team functions
3. Never drink
4. Avoid women
5. Go to bed by 10 pm
6. repeat daily

And a little counciling wouldn't hurt.

His suspension is twice as long as I thought he was going to get. He definitely deserves to be suspended for his actions and bad decisions. He's a franchise, two time two time Superbowl champ,I wouldn't think that he has to hunt for drunk pussy in a bar. Apparantly I'm mistaken.

I ain't goin' back to life without an elite quarterback. I only just got used to it. It's cold out there without one. There's no way that the unknown assets in Lots O' Picks can be equivocal to the trump card of a franchise QB. Ben is mine, mine, mine until his body breaks down, concussions ruin him, and the league spits him out like everybody else in the meat grinder.

And oddly enough, Bill Simmons suggests this intriguing, it-makes-so-much-sense-it'll-never-happen possibility:

Oh, like the Oakland fans would have judged him? Come on. JUST WIN, BABY!

    ...

So what if Al offered Pittsburgh the No. 8 pick and a No. 1 pick in 2012? Wouldn't the Steelers have to do it? If you're Al Davis, and you died four years ago … wouldn't you have to do it? If you're Roethlisberger, wouldn't you want a fresh start somewhere else? Stay tuned. I have no inside info whatsoever, and I made this whole thing up three minutes ago, but stay tuned.

He'd sure as hell be a lot better than whoever else Oakland dumps out under center, not to mention probably more helpful than who the Raiders would pick there (Simmons sez Dan Williams), and, oh, Adam Schefter's reporting (espn.go.com) that the Steelers like the cut of this offer's jib...

He's not going to my Raiders. As much as he would dramatically improve our chances to at least win the division, it would force Al to admit his mistake with Jafatass. I don't even think that Pittsburg is honestly, seriously thinking about trading him. I think it's just a scare tactic to every player on the team that NOBODY is safe.

Important lesson to Ben: If he wants to do anything questionable in Georgia again in his career, just obstruct justice in a murder case. NFL precedent would allow him to skate on that.

Apparently you're referring to Ray Lewis. That was in 2000, many years before the player conduct policy was created. The NFL couldn't very well retroactively penalize Lewis 7 years later. You might as well bring up the fact that Leonard Little killed a woman while drunk driving in 1998, or that Rae Carruth had his pregnant girlfriend shot and killed in 1999. There is no "precedent", no double standard; there wasn't a policy to penalize players for their off the field behavior and now there is.

He has worn out his welcome in the city. The real shit storm is in Pittsburgh where most of his bad behavior there has gone undocumented has now boiled to the surface. I also heard Adam Schefter on Mike & Mike retreat on his Oakland predication. The guy is flip flopper. He now says that most teams view Ben as radioactive and the Steelers are going to have to live with him. Apparently, the Rams of all people turned down the trade. If Washington didn't get McNabb I would expect them to do it, but I could see Peter Carrol or even the Bills making the trade. Its going to be an either uneventful draft or the most exciting one in years.

Nah. "I just can't live with Ben anymore!" is a manufactured controversy because of the emotional response to the misrepresentative reporting of the Milledgeville case. The pendulum is already starting to swing back once people stopped dreaming that they were going to get ten first round picks for him.

I don't know. The stuff I am hearing on the local radio from the fans is pretty well accurate. I am sure down the road if he is still around, some of that will become 50/50 or even break his way. I just don't know what would be worse for him or the Steelers if the go 5-1 when he is gone or break even or be 1-5? Those first six games are not cakewalks. The NO game on Halloween night is going to be awesome though.

Mostly what Justin said. Also, online polls are a terribly inaccurate guage of public opinion, as are radio phone-ins.

He'll probably be back after four games. To answer your question though, for the Steelers 5-1 would be better, clearly. For Ben....I doubt he'd be quite selfish enough to wish for them to tank it without him, but if they were to only go .500 in his absence he probably wouldn't be heartbroken.

That might be the stupidest question I've ever heard. Even if they go 6-0, he will be the starter. He's won 2 Super Bowls for them, and if they don't trade him (looking like they won't now) then they obviously want him around. And someone will overpay for Dixon.
