According to SLAM Wrestling Gene Kiniski is dead at 81 after lengthy battle with cancer.

Indeed he was. The Bruiser dropped it to him for a six month run. Right before his three year reign as NWA champ. So, it was at his prime. He was the WWA's 2nd Champ.
