Recap for WWE SmackDown 4.9.2010, taped from Chicago, Illinois.

We open with a video recap of last week's events before Tony Chimel introduces our NEW World Champion, Jack Swagger. Swagger talks about how he shocked the world last week. He says it doesn't matter who wins tonight's Number-one contender's match, because he's the odds-on favorite to walk out of Extreme Rules as champ. He says being champion suits him; it's changed him for the better. He says some people are born to be champs and calls himself the greatest competitor in the WWE now that Michaels's career is done. He says he deserves to be champ, which draws the ire of John Morrison. Morrison calls him a fluke, and says winning last week makes him a title holder, not a champion. Nice line. He says Swagger talks about changing, but he's still got the same stupid haircut and the same speech impediment. Swagger denies this, but Morrison presses on. Swagger gets one back, saying Morrison is still living in the shadow of The Miz. Morrison says all that might be right, but he still doesn't have a speech impediment, which finally pisses off Swagger enough, and we have...

Non-Title: Jack Swagger over John Morrison via Doctorbomb in 10 minutes. The promo was a bit childish and the speech impediment jokes are going to get old very fast. The match was enjoyable on its own. They need to name the Doctorbomb, but I can't think of any suitable name.

Backstage, Chris Jericho is talking to his rookie, Wade Barrett. Jericho is less than pleased that he's not the champ and that Barrett is not the #1 NXT rookie. Jack Swagger interrupts to tell Jericho that he's pulling for him, and that the only reason he cashed in on Jericho instead of Cena was because Jericho was injured; he was a sure thing. Jericho takes objection to that, and rips on Swagger walking around in a suit and looking stern, saying it doesn't make him Chris Jericho. Tru dat. Swagger says the belt makes him World Champion, and that is the end of that argument.

Shad hits the ring with footage from last week when he turned on JTG. Shad says it's his tyme, and all he did was remove JTG who was in his way. JTG attacks him, but that turns out badly for him when he eats a big boot on the outside.

Drew McIntyre and his awesome entrance music grace us with their presence. Drew tries to say something several times before he gets fed up and says that he's not wasting his breath on these people. Well, that was counterproductive. This all leads to...

Match 2: Drew McIntyre over Matt Hardy via Future Shock on the floor in 10 minutes. Another nice long match. I enjoyed the first one better, but this might be Drew's most enjoyable match to date.

CM Punk and the Straight Edge Society are out to save their NXT rookie, Darren Young. Serena calls the audience sinner who are leading pathetic lives. She pleads them to see the light and let CM Punk save them and make their lives better. Gallows says the moment of cleansing is worth a lifetime of pain. He says he recognized his destiny and allowed himself to be saved. CM Punk says that there was a time when Serena and Luke were just like everyone in the audience, but then he came along and saved them; made them better than everyone else. He sees despair and loneliness in the eyes of the audience, and in the eyes of Darren Young. He wants to fix it and prepares the clippers, but Young has changed his mind. "Who do you think you are?" - Punk. Young shoves him down, and gets mobbed by the SES before Rey Mysterio makes the save. Serena saves Punk from an early haircut, and Mysterio accepts the challenge and promises to end the SES. Boo for that!

Match 3: The Hart Dynasty over The Dudebusters via Sharphooter (Smith on Baretta) in 3 minutes. The Dudebusters are nothing special, and the Hart Dynasty could become something special. As such, the result was fairly obvious here.

Dolph Ziggler is with Josh Matthews, who asks him how it felt to put the Great Khali to sleep last week. Dolph offers a demo and puts Matthews to sleep. Oops.

Jack Swagger bumps into Edge to wish him luck. He says if Edge wins tonight, he's gonna do what Jericho could not and put Edge back on the shelf. Edge says to drop the nice guy act, because he's gonna win tonight and then win at Extreme Rules with the "ssshpear." "I do not have a speech impediment!" - Swagger.

Match 4: Chris Jericho and Edge battled to a double-countout in 19 minutes. A great match, though not on level with their WM match. The finish came when Jericho avoided the spear and they brawled out into the crowd. Edge avoids a chairshot and gets a Spear and stands tall.

- End Show.

Wrestling Counter: 42 minutes.

- A whopping 42 minutes of quality wrestling makes this show an automatic thumbs-up. After a couple of stinker shows during the past month or so, SmackDown seemed to get back on track with this show. I liked the DCO ending and wouldn't mind a triple threat at Extreme Rules, though I hope they keep the title on Swagger. And the speech impediment jokes have got to stop.

McIntyre's music makes me think of Bob Seger's 'Turn the Page' every time I hear it.

Last night's Smackdown did have some good matches and for the first time in a few weeks, Smackdown had more than 1 quality match.

I will agree that the speech impediment jokes on Swagger are already too old and need to create other ways to add fuel to future feuds with Swagger.

The Swagger / Morrison match was pretty solid. Swagger is a solid wrestler as he has had good matches with Cena, Orton, Morrison and others. The bump of the night has to go to Morrison when Swagger tripped Morrison from the ring apron and had the thinnly padded floor to cushion his fall.

I enjoyed the McIntyre and Hardy match. Fine for what it was and the Future Shock DDT on the outside was a good way to end the match and get the eventual pin.

I was actually hoping for Darren Young to join the SES just to see something different. Poor Darren Young; he gets jumped by the SES for refusing and pushing CM Punk and soon won't be on NXT too much longer.

The Dudebusters are already making me wish they would receive a couple of pink slips and just stop wasting my time of watching wrestling; they are not too bad in the ring but their gimmick is fricken stupid. Not surprised to see the Hart Dynasty to win here and now as faces, the Hart Dynasty look to be relevant and pushed in the tag team division.

How do we get a predicted triple threat match at Extreme Rules? By having a double countout in what was a good match to end the show.

I can see Edge winning in a couple of weeks at Extreme Rules but I think if Swagger is to be a credible champion, the Swagger should win at the PPV and keep the belt for at least a couple months.

Giving Smith -- the less interesting of the Hart team -- the Sharpshooter was brilliant. That crowd went nuts for it, and voila, he's got some traction.

Swagger had a better night. Almost anyone will look stiff when chatting with Edge or Jericho, so I cut him some slack. I thought his work against Morrison was fine. As was Drew's with Matt. Those guys were proving a point (seemingly against my comments from last week), and it made for a good match. Matt, however, looks even chubbier this week. I again plead for whittling him back to smaller size.

I love me some Punk, and I get the point of this week's SES segment, but I want to see that cat wrestle again. The extended skits -- no matter how well he does in them -- are getting routine.

The Swagger lisp thing has gotta keep going so the fans have an easy detriment to harp on him for, kinda like Albert and his hairy back getting "Shave your back" chants. As long as Swagger isn't made to look like a chump and has some credible wins he can be chastised for his speech while being seen as a main event threat.

Plus, dude he does sound kinda funny when he talks. If it gets you heat.......

I haven't heard Swagger that much, but haven't really noticed the lisp.
It can't be any worse than the lisps of Ric Flair or Dusty Rhodes.
With Swagger, I can't stop wanting to call him Biff from Back to the Future.

I found the Edge/Jericho match to be a total BORE.
It felt like they were going in slow motion or something. Two commercial breaks slowed it down even more. It was redeemed some by Jericho yelling throughout "Where's your spear now?" and whatever else was on his mind.

Man, Drew McIntyre's music (and entrance video for that matter) is so awesome, it now gets a huge pop everytime it starts! And the people really don't seem to cheer because of him, but because of his fn great entrance music!

I agree, it's one of my favorite themes to come along in a while.

AND I DREAM BROKEN DREAMS! I MAKE THEM COME TRUE!

That has to be on the next CD, won't it?

I really enjoyed this episode of Smackdown. Drew McIntyre is starting to grow on me, and I am among those who like his new theme music.

The idea of a triple threat at Extreme Rules intrigues me. These three guys could put on a great match. The font for Jack Swagger's name plate looks different though, and not quite as elegant, or regal as it used to.

Can someone post the lyrics of that song? I don't need the whole song, just the part that plays during Drew's entrance. I got the "What is yours, now is mine" part, but I'm drawing a blank on the rest.

Googling lead to another forum, where someone apperently messaged the guys on facebook and got this as a reply.

-----------------------------------
What’s that metronome I hear, perhaps the end is drawing near
You never hear the shot that takes you down
Now your dream’s a memory, and seems more true from far away
Just like smoke that fades and makes no sound
Out of time, so say goodbye
What was yours, now is mine

I dream broken dreams, I make them come true
I make them for you
I make them for you

Almost to the mountain top, you slip and fall just like a stone
Rolling ever faster to this nightmare you have sown
You had it all right in your grasp, but in a breath your minute passed
Now, at last, the end has come, you are all alone
Out of time, so say goodbye
What was yours, now is mine

I dream broken dreams, I make them come true
I make them for you
I make them for you

All your dreams are just illusion
Based on nothing and confusion
Don’t you look behind the curtain
No more time, the end is certain
Holding out for something you had dreamt about for years and years
Each day thinking tomorrow was the one
A train somewhere is off it’s tracks, it’s whistle blows, it wants life back
And echoes through a night of setting suns
Out of time, so say goodbye
The dream was yours, but now is mine

I dream broken dreams, I make them come true
I make them for you
I make them for you

I know, I'm a bad person -- but I cannot get past Swagger's lisp. I know that's immature, but it is what it is. "It can't be any worse than the lisps of Ric Flair or Dusty Rhodes.", sayeth dwaters -- yeah, it really is. Much worse. Not sure whether "I don't have a speech impediment" makes it better or worse.

Not only am I disappointed that they didn't pull the trigger on the Darren Young shaving. But gosh-golly he did a terrible job of acting in that segment.

Dear Matt: as you seem to be plumping up a bit, please consider a shirt. Watching your belly jiggle is neither attractive nor studly.

So I'm the only person who doesn't like Drew's new tune?

Not saying it's a bad song (I may have to give Shaman's Harvest a listen), just saying that, tempo-wise, it doesn't fit his gimmick. It's too slow, too sinister. His gimmick isn't "evil bastard", it's "priveleged bastard". The song would better fit Raven or Kane, not our current IC champ.

I'd be all over it if he were a stronger performer.

He isn't that bad, methinks. He's not spectacular by any stretch of imagination, but he's not horrible either. Just kind of dull. Perfectly carryable. I quite liked his match with Matt Hardy (who definitely needs to start wearing a shirt for his matches until he gets back in shape).

Morrison and Hardy make a lot of people look good. So far Drew has done a good job keeping up or working the big spots with them. But I'd like to see a distinct moveset. Currently I count the Future Shock and "odd ringside sequence" that leads to an easy pin or countout win.
