I ain't got much right now, just random gibberish...

The wooden shack with the EM toys eerily reminded me of...Jacob's cabin, complete with wooden chair.

Desmond in the MRI and getting a hefty download of his "other" memories eerily reminded me of...Smokey.

We see more head trauma - in Desmond's case, he started having visions of the original Charlie after suffering his blow to the head.

We see light being shone in Desmond's eyes - something we've seen a lot of in the show.

Eloise really is the temporal police. She speaks of someone (Charles?) affecting the way Desmond sees things, and warns Desmond of a "violation." It's implied that meeting Penny is the violation. When Desmond *breaks the rules* and meets her anyway - not just meets her, but *touches* her - his consciousness travels.

Charles: Let me explain my mission...
Desmond: No need brutha. I understand.

REALLY?!? Desmond, you are an asshole.

c and p from my column tomorrow:

Disclaimer: I’ve only watched the episode once so far, so some of the more subtle points have not come to me yet.

So, Desmond is not dead (yet). ABC deserves kudos or a kick in the nads for the promo (playing Amazing Grace on the bagpipes, making all us nerds think about Mr. Spock dying) that swerved most people. And it appears he is on a mission not from God (or Jacob), but Charles Widmore.

Has there ever been such a loaded list of guest stars in one episode? Charles Widmore, Penny (Milton?), Eloise Hawking/Widore, Daniel Faraday/Widmore, Charlie Pace and even George Minkowski.

Early thinking is that Eloise is working somehow with MIB right? And she’s probably doing it all for Daniel, to atone for killing him in 1977. And she probably doesn’t like Penny, since she’s the evil stepmother.

I have to admit, I chuckled when I saw that Penny was running at the track. Is she the one entering the race around the word in the Flash Sideways?

Hard to miss the giant painting of a scale in Widmore’s office. Same with what I presume was the Black Rock. And there’s that Scotch again.

I totally expected the page in the notebook Faraday was going to reveal was the one that said “Desmond Hume is my constant” (pictured in last week’s column).

So was Charlie actually the first person to become aware of the Sideways-verse on Earth-2? We think Juliet somehow was aware of it. Do you need a near-death (or death-death) experience to converge?

We all knew that MRI machines were evil already, yes?

the EM building seems very reminiscent of Jacob’s cabin, right down to the rocking chair.

They should have just gone ahead and cast Patton Oswald as the tech guy working for Widmore.

Next week: spotlight on Hurley. How many dead characters will return? Looks like at least 2 from the trailer.

If I'm trying to get out of that cabin I'm going to bang and kick on something other than the door which looked like the sturdiest part of the whole shack.

The flash sideways just got a lot more interesting. It has to be the MiB that put them all in this position though, right? Charlie, Charolette and Daniel are all alive and Jacob already told Richard that he could not bring his wife back from the dead.

The episode put a huge smile on my face, just like most of Desmond episodes do.

I did NOT expect Daniel. I thought he was not signed on for the show...Yes, I also expected 'desmond hume is my constant' in the notebook, but it was cool to hear him go 'suddenly i wrote quontum physics' which hints at HIS mind slipping between the universes?

And all the little things, including the eerie moment when Charlie put his hand on the glass in exactly the same way he did when he drowned were all very well done.
The scene with the bottle of scotch was very anvil-ish but still cool.

But like with most of Desmond's episodes I cannot think of anything but the MIchael Moorcock eternal champion stories.

There's several champions that have the power to change destiny (the candidates) but only one that can travel through the various universes and has memories of them (Desmond)

Now Daniel mentions detonating a nuke one time, and possibly hinting they just might have to do it again. The same thing one of his characters does/did (Oswald Bastable)

Anyways, all of a sudden it seems as if the alternative universe where 815 did land has a reason for existing and that it might be the key to the solution.

Awesome stuff.

"That man is the only person I'm aware of in the world who has survived a catastrophic electromagnetic event! I need to know that he can do it again. Or we all die!"

Well, fuck. Last week, I was pretty positive Lost and Not Lost were funhouse mirror images of each other but weren't going to cross over directly, and I told my friends so. I shouldn't have opened my big fat mouth. What do I know? Nuthin'. Not only did the sideways realities directly cross over this week via Desmond, but Charles Widmore on the Island seems to be aware of the other reality and is working against impending catastrophe.

Since the Island has always has been attributed with some form of sentience or otherworldly knowledge, I'm conjecturing the Island itself is aware of the sideways reality and is threatened by it, with a prideful umbrage that the Not Lost reality exists without it (and almost all of the main characters are doing relatively well without the Island in their lives). Maybe the Island has been taking steps to eliminate the sideways reality. Perhaps the Island communicated the existence of Not Lost to Charles Widmore via Eloise Hawking, gave the marching orders on what to do and even how to find the Island, which Widmore had been unable to do but suddenly he was able to take his Widmarine right to it.

That's as much speculatin' as I care to make at the moment.

I love that the glimpses of a crossover between the realities are via the love stories. Charlie has not met Claire but in a near death experience glimpsed that he loved her in another life. I also like that Desmond met Claire at LAX and then had to deal with Charlie for the rest of the episode. Daniel Widmore remembered he loved Charlotte. And of course, Desmond and Penny, the go-to weapon of mass tear-jerking Lost always turns to which never, ever fails. What is it about that scruffy Scot and that stiff ass Brit that their love story always leaves a lump in the throat? It's a Constant.

I liked Jack scoffing at Desmond that someone on Oceanic 815 ended up at the hospital. "Brother, a surprising number of people on our plane have ended up in this very hospital since the plane landed. Me, Charlie, the pregnant girl, the brunette in the handcuffs came by to see the pregnant girl. Any second now a couple of Koreans we don't know are on their way here."

They did a spectacular job showing Desmond's car crashing into the water. The camera angles used pretty much showed as closely as possible what it would be like to sit in a car that goes into water.

I also liked that the building housing the electromagnetic coils on Hydra Island resembled the raptor holding pen on Jurassic Park.

George from the Freighter turned out to be a great guy and was the best limousine driver since Argyle drove John McClaine to the Nakatomi Tower in the first Die Hard. The Freighter folk are generally nicer folk on Not Lost.

I loved all the callbacks: Widmore sharing his McCutcheon scotch with Desmond. The stadium where Jack and Desmond first met became where Desmond and Penny first meet. And of course NOT PENNY'S BOAT. Glad to see Daniel (Faraday) Widmore and Eloise Hawking too. "What happened, happened." In both realities, Penny is Daniel's half sister. I wonder if Penny's mother is ever going to be mentioned or if she's in any way important?

Desmond episodes are always so moving, I totally forgot about Sayid until he showed up and killed everyone at the end. I tend to think Smoke Locke is not aware of the sideways reality and what's going on with Widmore; that Sayid is taking Desmond back to Smoke Locke just because Desmond was "the Package", and to figure out what's going on.

"See you in another life, brother!"

So... at the end, did Desmond jump back to the Sideways world, or is he back to having two separate consciousnesses in each universe, with his sideways counterpart now vaguely aware of what he must do?

I was covering my eyes at the end because I completely expected Sayid to shoot Desmond. I was mildy disappointed he just told Zoey to run.

LOVED all the aforementioned Desmond-centric call backs in this episode.

Was it just me or did the museum exterior remind anyone else of the church where Desmond served as a monk?

So in Sideways LOST, you get what you always wanted... Its one of those booby traps where you are presented with something tantalizing so it distracts you from your ultimate goal. I'm starting to feel like Hawking's been pulling the strings this whole time. I agree that for her, its all about protecting Daniel.

You believe me, don't you?

THANK you!

Now, in my memory, the guy who yelled "Shoot her! SHOOOOT HER!" looks a helluva lot like a young Charles Widmore ... In fact, I'm gonna go check IMDB right now and make sure it's not the same actor.

It's not. Bob Peck (Robert Muldoon in JP) has been dead for quite some time, I think.

BTW, one of Widmore's henchmen was the kid from Kate and Allie.

tidbit I picked up this morning: All 3 of the people helping Desmond (Faraday Charlie Minkowski) are dead in 2007.

Apparently, in the original script Zoe was supposed to be killed off as well, but Darlton gave her a last-second reprieve. Take that for what it's worth. The last time this happened, to my knowledge, was Ben Linus. Not saying Zoe will become as integral to the plot in the next 6 episodes as Ben became over 6 seasons, but it's food for thought. I keep expecting her to pop up in someone's Flash-Sideways to fill out her backstory, but we'll see.

Since we don't have enough literary references on this show already, we found out that Penny's maiden name (and presumably her mother's last name) is Milton.

Wow. This show is brilliant. Absolutely, totally, entirely. It's worth all the energy & time & obsession that I've put into it. I'm grinning. This is an amazing ride.

There are so many things & they've done them all so brilliantly. Wow.

I was just watching a show on Science channel yesterday -- may actually have been while I was recording Lost -- titled "Parallel Universe" (tivo.com). It's on again tonight, if anybody's interested in catching it. One of the visuals toward the end was a representation of 2 branes, each representing an entire universe, fluttering like silk scarves in a breeze. I liked happening to have that freshly available in my brain (*arr-arr*) when I watched this Lost.

Awesome - the Desmond episodes always going a long way toward advancing the story and this one did not disappoint. the connections between the LOST world & the slideways world now have a whole new meaning.

I had said a few weeks ago that it seemed like the slideways world was a world without Jacob. Slideways Faraday basically confirmed that with his comment that he felt like he had already set off the bomb that altered the timeline. We did see the island at the bottom of the ocean in the opener which would mean that both Jacob & MIB would be sleeping with the fishes.

Slideways Charlie was creepy throughout - not anything like the character he came to be on the island.

Sayid let Zoe live as a warning to Widmore.

so much more to process - must go to hulu and ignore work for the next hour or two

So, when we rewatch the series in it's entirety, after the end of this season, high up on the "List of Things to Watch For" is all the "altered consciousness" events. I'm thinking they probably all have some cross-perception between (among?) the universes.

So, definitely head trauma, on the way to being dead, CPR'd back to life, really dead but back anyway. All the times that classically your life "Flashes Before Your Eyes". All the various things that they muttered, seemed to be confused about, or had major shifts in personality or direction.

How about the LSD (-ish) trip that Oldham sent Sayid on. ("No, you gave me just the right amount.") Prescribed sych meds that Hurly (& probably others were variously on). Wasn't Jack popping pills in addition to the drinking, after the O6 return? All the crazies: Rousseau, recent Claire, & Locke's mother. And generally, all the other psych & parapsychology stuff Dharma was doing. Those all have to count as "visiting that between-worlds place".

Does really drunk count? Jack's father was spending a lot of time in that altered state. Sawyer had been drinking pretty seriously over Juliet's death before he saw the blond kid in the jungle, that MIB was so surprised Sawyer could see. Do some of those count too?

How about coming in & out of surgical anaesthesia? Ben waking up to make decisions while Jack was in the middle of his spinal surgery.

Almost everybody has had one or more of these "opportunities". Some of them give us some hints of the other world they'd been off to. Once we have the full tapestry, we can go looking for even more of those linkages.
