Pretty self-explanatory. What's your favorite song that's about another song? I'm saying Jimmy Eat World: "Authority Song". A love song about putting the Mellencamp chestnut on in a bar... aww.

No, Guru there isn't. I came into this thread just to say "Tribute" and you beat me to it.

Thanks for the link Guru. I still haven't seen the video, mainly because I avoid MTV like the plague. The probably play it even less than Wonder Boy which *should* have been a Top Ten single if they would have supported it. It's THAT good.

When I saw the subject line, that was the first song I thought of. Not that there`s anything wrong with Tribute...

Come on people, even if it's not your favorite, have we all forgotten "Killing Me Softly" so quickly? I kinda dug it, though of course it must bow at the altar of the D.

Anyone remember the joy of seeing him bash the Undertaker's motorcycle with his sledgemhammer and doing no damage and being all like, "Mjolnir will not break thine cycle? I say thee NAY!" and dumping it off the stage. - Enojado Viento says the funniest thing I've ever read on Wienerville.

Well it got absolutely no airplay anywhere in the world that I know of ... but I have to say "Nebraska" by the Cash Brothers. It's about sitting in your car at 3 in the morning with a broken heart and listening to Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska album.

If you like alt-country/roots rock, definitely check out the Cash Brothers' How Was Tomorrow. Click Here to visit their website. This album was one of my favourites of 2001 ... I really hope they have another coming our way.

Cash Money? Nope. They are actually brothers by the name of Cash ... Andrew Cash (Boomtown and Hi) and Peter Cash (formerly of the Skydiggers ... Restless and Road Radio).

If you have the chance, download the song "The Only One" by them. I just put the album on after posting my reply ... if you are on their wavelength this song will convert you.

Edit: If you can't find "The Only One", download "Awkward Game" ... I'm kidding myself you'll never find it. But "Awkward Game" is the best song of 2001 ... it should have been all over the radio and won awards and sold five million copies of the album and been in six movie soundtracks.

"Hook", by Blues Traveler was interesting if you listened to the lyrics. (Which were about how the lyrics weren't about anything but you probably thought they were because they really sounded like it. "It doesn't matter what I say, as long as I sing with infliction. It makes you feel like I'll convey some inner truth or vast reflection, but I've said nothing so far and I can keep it up as long as it takes.")

If you're talking about songs that talk about how they aren't about anything you will never beat NOFX, "Please Play This Song On the Radio." (We wrote this song/It's not too short; it's not too long/It's got backup vocals in just the right places/It's got a few "ooh's" and "aah's"/And it takes a little pause/Just before the second chorus)

For songs that are about the song itself, you can go back a bit to Sly & the Family Stone's "Dance To the Music", where the song is about the parts of the song, with the various band members saying what they're playing at that moment and why. Sort of Sly's blueprint for writing a Sly Stone song.

Then there's the Beatles' "Only a Northern Song", which is about intentionally writing a bad song ("If you're listening to this song/You may think the chords are going wrong/I just wrote it like that" and "If you think the harmony/Is a little up and out of key/You're correct"...and the chorus is "It doesn't really matter what chords I play/What words I say/Or time of day it is/'Cause it's only a Northern Song"). Northern Songs was the songwriting company for Lennon & McCartney, and at the time, George Harrison was contractually treated like just a staff songwriter when his songs were published under Northern Songs.

Well, I thought that was more about begging to get airplay, their formula for doing it (and their inability to even write enough lines, never mind their ability to rhyme--which they pronouce "rim"), and then setting up the DJ playing it to be in a position where "the FCC's gonna shit right on your head" by spewing every single swear they can think of after a false finish. But yeah, that's nothing of substance.

I should have clarified. It's a song about how the song means nothing, but for a reason. Is that oxymoronic enough?
