With the up and coming Iron Man 2 due in early May, it made me think if this movie could possibly does as well (or even better) than the first one and where it could rank among the top comic book movies of all time.

Iron Man 2 looks very solid with a cast that any movie would want. If it does well, I could see this movie being at the top 5 of all time.

My List of the Greatest Comic Book Movies ever made thus far (but in no particular order);

1)Batman Begins
2)The Dark Knight
3)Iron Man
4)V for Vendetta
5)Watchmen

I believe V for Vendetta and Watchmen were considered comic books (and graphic novels). I think this would still put them in this category.

2 others on this list to consider would be Batman and Batman Returns

What are your thoughts or your opinions on the best movies to hit the big-screen from the comics?

well, my favorites would be a bit different. I like the movies you list a lot, but I like campy movies a lot more - cartoony, if you will.

Dick Tracy is my favorite. It's a hoot

of the batman movies my favorite so far has probably been Batman and Robin, but I dug Dark Knight of course. I don't think if it as cartoony. I must admit I liked the 60s and 70s Batman a lot more than I do the current batman.

I also liked Howard the Duck - great adaptation of that misunderstood comic.

and Superman - the first one, with Chris Reaves. Classic and ned Beatty's in it. That's really all I need.

and the first Punisher, the one with Dolph. Frank was appropriately pissed off in that one.

Plus, I rather dig the 1966 batman movie with Adam West and Burt Ward. Pow Zap Crash!

I won't try to put these in any particular order, but I loved both of the first two X-Men films, Iron Man, every Batman film except Batman and Robin (though I feel The Dark Knight was the best of the bunch so far), Superman I, II and Returns.

I think Spider-Man 2 needs to be right up there, though that's a solid top three.
I can't see how Iron Man 2 could be anything but awesome.

I always seem to like the second movie better than the first.
I think origin stories take too long to unfold-- I'd rather just jump in with them established.
Though it's hard to say if The Dark Knight would have been as good if Batman Begins didn't lay all the groundwork.

I like the Green Lantern: First Flight choice. I don't have high expectations for the live action movie. I can't imagine it being any better than First Flight. I saw Planet Hulk this weekend too, there are some pretty good straight-to-DVD comic book movies out there.

My top favorites would have to be Dark Knight, Iron Man, Green Lantern: First Flight, Men in Black (that was a comic wasn't it?), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Rocketeer. Oldboy if we're counting movies based on manga.

My favorite comic book movie of all isn't actually based on a comic book. It's Unbreakable. It's based on (and prominently features) comic books in general, so in my mind it qualifies.

After that I'd put the two Nolan/Bale Batmans (I hated the 1989 Batman with a passion and never saw the sequels to it), Superman 2 (three, if you count him twice) and maybe the first X-Men movie. Roughly in that order. And, yeah, if you want to count Men In Black, it would be up there, but to me it's not a comic book movie because to me that implies superheroes, since that's what I read comics for.

There have been more disappointments for me than comic book movies that were something special.

All this stuff is subjective and is mostly justified by "because it's what I like", but I'll try to give reasons anyway.

1) The Crow - One of my favorite movies period of all time. Perfectly captures the mood of the comic, fantastic soundtrack, killer visuals, iconic imagery and pretty much obsessed me when it came out (yes, I was an angsty seventeen year old).

2) The Dark Knight - Heath Ledger's Joker. Do you need another reason?

3) X-Men 2 - Felt very, very much like an X-men comic, lots of fun little geeky cameo stuff. The X-Men are probably the biggest part of my comic-buying life (when I bought comics) and this was the best of their film canon.

4) Iron Man - Not a character I'm deeply attached to, but tremendously well-made and Robert Downey Junior is both perfect casting and one of my favorite actors anyway.

5) Batman - Tim Burton's vision of Gotham and Batman might seem too cartoonish compared to the Nolan version, but I can't deny the impact that movie had when it came out. I've seen it more than virtually any other comic book movie (save The Crow). Jack Nicholson's Joker was terrifying in his own way and I still like Michael Keaton's performance as Batman/Bruce Wayne better than pretty much anyone else's (yes, even Bale, who I think almost tries too hard).

Honorable Mentions: Spider Man 2 (very close and definitely sixth), V for Vendetta, Sin City.

And, on sheer performance, I love Jackie Earl Haley's Rorschach in Watchmen. Of course, that might just be because I love Rorschach so much, but I thought he did a fantastic job.

Oh, and I retain love for the Dolph Lundgren Punisher. The crash through the skylight with a chain gun seen alone makes the movie worth it.

This is going to be tough. My top ten.

1. Spiderman 2. This is what I wanted from day one of Spiderman. A great story, pure action, Dock Ock and developing Peter from down on his luck loser to the guy who gets the girl. MJ's "Tiger, you just hit the jackpot." line seals the deal for me.

2. X-Men 2. I am torn on this, because when I see Phoenix in the Dam, I get excited for the sequel then I remember how hard X-Men 3 sucked. Wolverine tearing apart the army guys as well as giving each X-Men expect Cyke, a great scene here and there is what makes the movie great. They also did a great job of setting up the mutants in the real world. The opening scene with Nightcrawler is amazing.

3. Superman II. As much as I love Superman I, it was missing the big fight which this one delivers in spads. We also get to see a side of Clark with giving up his powers for Lois as well as Lois figuring it out that Clark was Superman. Yet, the real reason for how high it is, is due to the kneel before Zod scene. Superman crushing Zod's hands with the John Williams' score in the background is the greatest scene in superhero history and one of my top ten scenes ever in cinema.

4. V for Vendetta. Out of all the Alan Moore films that were transferred to film, this is the best one. Granted, its not as faithful as Watchmen, but it doesn't blur things like From Hell or League. V keeps the core of Moore's story of a man out for vengeance what the government did to him. It doesn't look away from the politics it is stating and never really apologizes for it either which it shouldn't. The domino scene maybe the best montage of the 2000s. V really is the Poli Sci hero that Poli Sci people have been begging for.

5. Batman Begins. I bought this DVD on a bet. I loved Burton's Batman and didn't want to believe this could be better. So my friends beat me if I don't like the DVD, they would re-buy the DVD from him. Needless to say they kept their money. Minus Gordon in the Robin role and Bale blatantly ripping of Keaton when he was Batman and Katie Holmes, this is a near perfect movie. Bale is the best Bruce Wayne to date and the cast is filled with top notch actors who aren't there for a pay check. As much as people love Ledgar as Joker, Liam Nesson as Ras Al Ghul owns all. Made it possible for reboots in comics not to be seen as a joke and set itself up nicely for a sequel that went off the rail as soon as Ledgar's body hit the floor.

6. Incredible Hulk. A lot of people liked Iron Man from this year, but I enjoyed this a tad bit more mainly it was a sorta sequel to Iron Man. Norton as Banner provides the missing human quality that was missing from the first Hulk. He plays him as an average guy with a giant problem. While not in the acting league of Jennifer Connolley, Liv Taylor is a good Betsy Ross. Tim Roth is a great villain as well as Sam Huston as General Ross. It felt less like a Hulk movie and more like a chapter in a Marvel crossover.

7. Batman. While it has not aged well, it is still the movie everyone with a dark character steals from. Burton did a great job of taking the casual fan's views of Batman from the Adam West TV show and turning it on its head. Keaton is still the best Batman today and the one everyone steals from. His Wayne is played for comedy, but his is brooding when need be. Nicholson played Joker damn near perfect only to be slight edged out by Ledger year later who had better writers that fleshed out the character. Basinger sucks as Vale, but most of the female parts at the time had the screaming damsel in distress even though she is supposed to be a tough as nails photographer. Burton did a wonderful job of capturing the grit of Gotham as well as what the Batman character represents to the average viewer.

8. Watchmen. It should be higher since it is one of my favorite books of all time, but it has a problem. A problem that brings it down a number of notches. The problem is changing around a line from one character to another. The line is "Nothing ever ends." This line was originally spoken by Dr. Manhattan to Ozymandias as his computance. Many people believe that Ozy got away with everything he did thus making Watchmen so different from anything else written at the time. The reality is that line is meant to put a thought into someone who values knowledge and his self-worth above all else that what he did was meaningless. If they had just done the line right this would be in top 3 if not 1. Instead they went with Owlman beating up Ozy who looks bored. The rest of the film is as close as anyone is going to get to film the unfilmable book. Rorschach and Comedian are perfect.

9. The Crow. While many consider it a Batman rip-off it was the definitive grunge/goth movie. A great soundtrack and Brandon Lee's final performance make this a great film. The movie doesn't have a bullshit in it. It gets to the point it wants to make and the movie just flies by. Ernie Hudson is awesome as the old cop. While not as faithful as the comic, it does get the main theme right as well as most of the characters. A good indy style film buried in a sea of big budget heroes.

10. Superman. It is the Citizen Kane of comic book films. For awhile this is the movie all comic books were judged by. Donner put together one of the best casts in cinema and created a film that made you believe a man could fly. Christopher Reeves as Superman is tour du force that when people think of Superman, they say his face. Hackman makes a good Lex and Kidder is a great Lois Lane. Yet, John Ford as Pa Kent and Brando as Jor-El steal the movies. They create great father figures for the orphaned alien of Superman. The reason why its so low is due to the fact that Luthor's plot was weak even back in the 80s and the special effects have not aged well. It probably could stand to lose ten minutes here or there to keep it from being a bit boring at times. Still, it is a great template for all superhero films.

I'm going to try something a bit different. Instead of just listing my favorite movies, let me try to be a bit more objective and come up with what I think are the best made movies. Because if we're all honest with ourselves, we can usually see a difference between the movies we like the best, and the movies that are the best made. Based on cinematography, acting, and the clarity of the narrative, I'd say my picks for the 5 best comic book films are The Dark Knight, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, X2, and the 1989 Tim Burton Batman. I think, based on my criteria, even though there are other films I like as much or more than these, these 5 are the best.

When referring to comic book movies are we really talking about superhero movies? That means we leave out films like Road to Perdition, A History of Violence and Persepolis, all of which are great movies. That said, sticking with superhero flicks I'd say...

1- The Dark Knight
2- Superman II
3- V For Vendetta
4- Batman Begins
5- Swamp Thing (No real relation to the comic but I love the campy nature of this one)

I forgot all about Dick Tracy (someone mentioned him) and yes, that definitely is a classic.

The Incredible Hulk with Ed Norton was definitely good and as far as I am concerned, the one that came out a few years ago never happened.

In terms of people who played their characters well, I would say Robert Downey Jr. played Tony Stark/ Iron Man down to a tee (and I think Iron Man resurrected his acting career). Christian Bale was nothing short of really good as Bruce Wayne and Batman and Danny DeVito as Penguin? No one could have filled that role as well as him.

If I heard correctly, Christopher Nolan is re-doing Superman which would be good because that franchise has had a hard time making a name for itself again and what better person than Nolan who has had giant success with his Batman movies.

With Captain America somewhere in the works and so far an all-star cast for an Avengers movie, right now is the best time to be a comic and a movie fan.

Nolan's a producer on the new Superman movie. While he doesn't plan on directing it personally, he'll be helping to shepherd the project along. Really, I think good producers are some of the most overlooked people in the film business (although, there are definitely a lot more bad producers than good ones, and it's not like producers aren't getting a ton of money for what they do anyhow, so it's not like they're going unrewarded). A good producer can really help a picture from getting bloated or overwrought, which was the root cause behind all the problems in Singer's Superman Returns.

I think that the pre miller Batman and post miller batman characters are so totally different (and the criminals too) that we overlook the 60s Batman movie. As much as I liked Danny Devito as Penguin, nobody will ever be more Penguin to me as Burgess Meredith. PLus, I always dug Alan Napier as Alfred. Again, in the pre-miller world, where Batman was a gimmick master and pure as the driven snow.

also, back in the day, where a movie also existed from a TV show, Adventures of Superman, Noel Neill was completely awesome as Lois Lane. Again, from that era of comic books.

Huh, maybe I am wrong here, looks like there wasn't an adventures of superman movie back then. She played Lois Lane in a few movies and series back then and cameo starred as Lois' mom in the first modern Superman and was in Superman returns a few years ago.

certainly the greatest Lois Lane of all time - still alive too. She's like 90

Wasn't she Lois Lane in the Kirk Alyn superman serials/movies? I think "Atom Man vs. Superman" was kind of a backdoor pilot for the TV show, but Kirk didn't want to lower himself to doing TV.

I always thought it was kind of neat that the first actual Superman movie was Atom Man vs. Superman and the last one (until Superman Returns ruined it) was Nuclear Man vs. Superman. Neat how they snuck that in.

Actually, there was a Kirk Alyn serial before Atom Man vs. Superman that was just called Superman. Like all the early serials, it runs a bit longer than the premise can really support, but it begins with my absolute favorite Last Days of Krypton sequence.

I don't think Noel was in the serials, but she was in the Kirk Alyn movie(s?)

OK, now, MUST look

she was in the two Kirk Alyn movies, but not in the serial, Joan Alexander did that. (she was also the voice of Lois in the 60s cartoons!). Then for Reeve's first movie, they tried a different actress, but went back to Noel for the TV show.

(thanks to IMDB)

she played Gertrude Vanderworth in Superman Returns too.

she must have retired after Adventures was over, she wasn't in anything again until she played Lois' Mom in the first Chris Reeve's movie.

Wait, this is confusing me. I did a double-check on the IMDB credits, and it says:

Superman appeared in two film serials in 1948 and 1950. Kirk Alyn starred and Noel Niel played Lois Lane in both. Noel Niel also played Lois on the "Adventures of Superman" TV show. Joan Alexander was the voice of Lois for the Max Fleischer cartoons (which are phenomenal, by the way).

I didn't realize that superman and atom man thing (and the others ) were serials.

Yeah, Supes stuff (especially back then) was pretty cool. Hope some day we can have something that isn't Superman Returns
