It was hard to decide which icon to use this week. It was either go Marvel for the big Peter Parker: Fired story arc or DC for officially getting the ball rolling on Bruce Wayne's big return. I decided to go with the former, just because of all the hype, so let's do it.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #624: Issue starts with Spidey saving Jameson from New Vulture. New Vulture manages to escape, but now we've got a sticky wicket of people potentially think Jameson's the man behind the New Vulture. So in order to help him out, Peter Parker decides to doctor a photo of Jameson kicking his desk into a photo of Jameson kicking New Vulture as a means of clearing Jonah's name. Jameson decides to repay Peter by inviting him to a press conference. The press conference begins and Jameson immediately exposes the photo as a phony, in the name of journalistic integrity. Jameson completely shouts down Parker before doing his best Vince McMahon impression and firing the hell out of him. Being completely exposed in public, Peter now has zero credibility as a photographer left. Issue ends with Peter looking up to see New Vulture still on the loose.

Ok, I have a lot of major problems with the way this was done. First off, Jonah was always a guy who was a total jerk on the exterior, but always had a hidden soft side, particularly for Peter. Hell, Jonah secretly funded his legal defense at one point. So for Jameson to completely throw Peter under the bus for trying to save his administration isn't just a dick move, but it's a borderline out-of-character moment. It would make me want to have sympathy for Peter...if Peter wasn't such a complete moron. No matter how you slice it, Peter's actions WERE unethical. At the end of the day, as a journalist, what he did was 100% wrong, no matter what the reasoning. We're supposed to feel sorry for Peter trying to make the ends justify the means? This whole turn of events feels sloppily thrown together and tarnishes two of the Spidey world's biggest characters. Considering one of them is the main character, that's not a good thing. The fight scenes with New Vulture save this one from "Cry For Justice #7" bad, but I still can't in good conscience recommend it. Thumbs down!

BATMAN & ROBIN #10: And now business starts to pick up. After that resurrected Bruce Wayne of the last few issues turned out to be a fake, Dick Grayson has put two and two together and has concluded Bruce is somewhere else in the timeline. It's something the JLA apparently knew could happen with Darkseid's Omega Effect. Wait, really? And they're just thinking of that NOW? Anyway, that quibble aside, Dick and Damian look through Wayne Manor for clues and find various Wayne ancestor paintings. They begin to wonder if any of those paintings are of Bruce trying to leave them clues. Meanwhile, Damien wonders if Bruce's return means the end of him as Robin (we can only hope) and decides to attack Dick, who falls through a hole before he can do so. Damien wonders why he did that and concludes that Talia's been messing with his head and runs outside. There, he runs into Oberon Sexton, who vows to help. End issue. We have a bonafide mystery on our hands here, as signs are starting to point to Oberon Sexton actually being Bruce Wayne himself, a theory made more plausible by Damien theorizing that Bruce is ALREADY back tot he present, but horribly changed by his experience. I'm not ready to back that theory just yet, as it could be one giant red herring. Either way, Morrison's got a lot of people thinking...in a good way! Best issue of the "Batman & Robin" era to date. Thumbs up!

JUSTICE LEAGUE: RISE AND FALL SPECIAL #1: Now comes the aftermath of last week's abominable "Cry For Justice" ending. Green Arrow's trying to exact vengeance at an alarming rate. He's purely in it for the kill now. The other DC heroes start to get wise and confront Ollie, with Barry Allen notably the most outraged of all of them. Barry even declares that Ollie must be stopped "before he kills AGAIN!" Ok, so the dialogue is still pretty bad. The other notable moment is that Prometheus's helmet has disappeared, so it looks like we have a bait and switch and Prometheus should be back in short order. As for the issue, bad dialogue, bad art, bad investment. Thumbs down.

SECRET SIX #19: The Six go on a rescue mission against a Brother Blood cult. Black Alice goes undercover, but it backfires quickly and Ragdoll has to go in for the save. To make matters worse, their rescue target is already dead. The Six then meet with their client (while Black Alice passes Ragdoll as "Do you like me?" note), while Catman gets a phone call. Apparently, a mysterious guy has his son and will keep him alive depending on how many of the Six that Catman can kill in the next five minutes. Nice cliffhanger! Minus points for the Cheshire side-plot that I couldn't make heads or tails of, but good stuff nonetheless. Thumbs up!

Ok, so Blackest Night didn't end and Siege didn't continue. But come back next week, anywayy.

I continue to be frustrated with Marvel's delight in making Peter scuttle himself with bad judgment.

Marvel believes kicking Peter around well create new readers for him due to people feeling bad for him. The opposite occurs each time. Peter has been kicked around enough through out the years especially due to Brand New Day that fans are numb when it comes to his hardships. Its like cutting off the hands of a cripple kid, people will turn away in horror then be sympathetic.

It also goes against JJJ's character since he always treated Peter like a nephew. He should have fired Peter quietly for attempting to docture the photo instead doing it in public. He could have given a nice speech about no matter what people think of him, it will not compromise his principals and won't let people go so far to have people do it for him. Then he fires Peter for being too much like a family member then a reporter then says he will say its a cut back due to the economy then the real reason. Instead they went in a route where they totally alienate what fanbase the book has since Brand New Day. God, Marvel just sucks right now when it comes to Spiderman and their reboot of Tony just for people to like before the movie is stupid too. People will go see Iron Man 2, trust me.

I agree with the criticism of the Peter = Fired storyline. Remember 20 years ago, when Peter was discovered in his Spidey costume by Nick Katzenberg, who thought Peter was faking these Spider-Man photos all of this time? Pete claimed he was in the costume for a Bugle promotional photo and Jonah said that was okay with him (it was Robbie who had the issue with it and tore Peter a new one, but that was over a separate, Tombstone-related issue).

While I know that to expect modern writers to adhere to a precedent of a 20-year-old storyline is crazy, it has been totally established over the years that Jonah wouldn't do this to Peter.

"In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love. They had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock." -- Orson Welles, The Third Man
