They're saying on the news that it's like 500 times the energy released as the Haiti quake.

Struck about 200 miles south of Santiago, initial report is 122 dead, and the main highway stretching up and down the country has a number of failures. Working in their favor is that it's a lower population area near the epicenter, and generally better construction standards. Communication is very sporadic so far.

The evacuation plan for Hawai'i is underway with four or five hours to prepare, and things appears to be proceeding smoothly. Oregon, Washington state, Alaska and British Columbia have just been specifically added to the tsunami warning in addition to California.

We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

The Haiti quake was 7.0. This one is 8.8. A 9.0 would be 100x more powerful than a 7.0, so this would be 80x, at least accoring to the Richter scale.

The tsunami warning was on our weather today - that's just insane. Hopefully it turns out OK.

EDIT: This is kind of omnious. (From the Seattle Times)

The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area of Chile on May 22, 1960. The magnitude-9.5 quake killed 1,655 people and left 2 million homeless. The tsunami that it caused killed people in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines and caused damage to the west coast of the United States.

According to the calculator, it depends on how you define strength. It's about 80 times the magnitude, but about 500 times the amount of energy released. Either way, it was significantly stronger.

Sing this special song. It's just for you.
Well this was unusual to wake up to. Apparently my work has shutdown for the day and I can't hear any of the usual neighborhood kids doings as kids do. Still, the view outside my window says the apocalypse hasn't happened yet.

Most homes and businesses in Chile are built to handle earthquakes. Chile is far better prepared for something like this than Haiti.

Screwing up on Poland in his debate in '76 is viewed as a miscue that cost Gerald Ford that election.
