The Rockets, Kings and New York Knicks have agreed to terms that will expand the Houston-Sacramento deal into a three-way trade that lands Tracy McGrady with the Knicks, according to NBA front-office sources.
The Knicks will acquire McGrady and Sergio Rodriguez from Sacramento, sources said.
The Rockets get Kevin Martin, Jordan Hill and Jared Jeffries from New York and will have the right to swap first-round picks with New York in 2011 as well as take on New York's 2012 first-round pick.
A source close to the negotiations told ESPN NBA Insider Chad Ford that the Knicks' pick is top-1 protected in 2011 and top-5 protected in 2012.
Sacramento obtains Houston's Carl Landry and Joey Dorsey and New York's Larry Hughes.
It looks like the Knicks made this trade with the huge assumption that they're hitting paydirt in the free agent market this offseason. They'd better hope they're right, because if they don't and they wind up cellar dwellers again, they'd lose significant positioning in the 2011 draft and are already losing their 2012 first-rounder. And I wouldn't bet all that on a T-Mac trade. Hell, they'll probably get better mileage out of Sergio Rodriguez than T-Mac.
I think the Rockets are clearly the big winners here, especially once the Jared Jeffries deal expires.

Oh man, just beat me to it. Here's my work anyway:
Here's how it looks as I type this:
KINGS get now former Rockets Carl Landry, Joey Dorsey and the Knicks' Larry Hughes (and get to keep Kenny Thomas, who surely feels screwed)
KNICKS get Tracy McGrady from Houston and Sergio Rodriguez from the Kings
ROCKETS get Kevin Martin EDIT: and Hilton Armstrong from the Kings, and from the Knicks: Jared Jeffries, Jordan Hill and an option to swap #1s with New York in 2011 AND maybe the Knicks' #1 in 2012 as well.
Martin reuniting with RICK is probably a good thing, and this definitely signifies a torch passing to young Tyreke Evans. Hard to believe Martin was the longest-tenured King on the roster before today. (Kenny Thomas doesn't count.) Martin and Yao could be a big deal next year, or a non-factor. How's THAT for fence sitting?
I like Landry to the Kings, but to be honest I know next to nothing about whether Hughes is a good fit or not. I have no idea who Joey Dorsey is.
I will leave Knicks analysis to The Usual Suspects. ;-)

There was talk on the local radio that the knicks must think they can get two of the three 'big' free agents next season, Lebron (who I doubt is leaving the Cavs) Dwayne Wade (who probably doesn't leave Miami) or Chris Bosh, who they were saying loves it in Toronto.
If they can't get ONE of them, they're screwed, not to mention putting all their eggs in the "we can get TWO max contract guys" basket.
The Rockets made out like bandits, especially if Yao can make a comeback next season.
To me the most stunning part of this is that the Knicks traded those draft picks, so if they DON'T get any of the Big Free Agents they are completely screwed, unless I'm missing something.

I really liked this article (nymag.com) by Will Leitch.
So what happens if they don't get LeBron and Wade/Bosh/whomever this off-season? If this trade goes through, they are doomed. With no big free agent coming in, you'll have a team of Gallinari, Douglas, Curry, Chandler and ... well, whatever detritus is lying around. And there will be a low draft pick next year and none in 2012 to fill the coffers. The Knicks are going all-in for this summer's free-agent bounty with this move. It's an extremely risky maneuver, with a potentially massive reward. But if it doesn't work, this team is going to be even worse than it is now, for a long time into the future. Don't expect Mike D'Antoni to stick around much after that.

The inclusion of the draft picks stuns me. You'd think the Knicks would treasure those things like gold after wasting and/or dealing so many high picks under Isiah, but now they're mortgaged through 2012 yet again.
Kirk, crackers are a family food. Happy families. Maybe single people eat crackers, we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know. It's a market we can do without.
It's a steep price. A steep STEEP price, but Isiah dug such a deep hole it is kind of amazing that the Knicks might finally be out of it. I would have really liked to have 2 of the 3 things Houston wanted, with some combo of the picks and Hill, but not all three because Jefferies really isn't a horrid player anyways.
Anyway it's done. The dice had to be rolled. I can't watch this bunch of idiots get blown out and play crappy basketball, and D'Antoni looked like he hated them all so why not bring in a new batch to finish the season.
They do look like they are screwed if they lose out on Lebron, but on the other hand Miami failed to get Wade help and maybe two of these guys get together and decide that they want to build in NY together.
Of course if they miss out on all the top names there are going to be teams looking to dump salary and next year we will be hearing a lot about Eddy Curry's expiring contract. So, there are plenty of options. Hopefully, they don't sign two major guys like Orlando in the 90's and have one blow out his foot right out of the gate.
As for now I'm actually kind of excited to see Sergio Rodriguez run a D'Antoni offense and T-Mac, well it will be interesting to see what he has left.
At least the future looks full of possibilities again, so that's something for a Knicks fan.
*can we put the word 'Knicks' in the spell check bank?
ESPN is saying this is like a trial for T-Mac for next year - they get to see if he shows up or gets hurt this year before spending money on him next year. Is there any other outlet reporting that they are looking to keep him past this season, or is this just an analyst looking to fill time until the story gels?

It came up in the article I linked to.
Is the McGrady aspect of the deal just for this season? Officially, yes: McGrady's contract expires after this year. But Knicks president Donnie Walsh is hoping to keep McGrady around after this season, depending on what happens in off-season free agency, and McGrady is on record as saying he'd love to play in New York.

I think Houston kinda made a bad decision to deal Carl Landry away as he has been the catalyst for keeping the Rockets above .500 in the rugged Western Conference. Granted, they did recieve Kevin Martin but Landry has come off playing good this season.
The Knicks can only hope for a healthy T-Mac (pretty unlikely now these days) for next season where they hope to use their cap space to sign one or two big name players (good luck NY).
The Kings made off alright, as well as Houston but the Knicks are clinging on to all hope that they can sign at least one big name and going for two in the off-season.
The Rockets and Kings may have helped themselves for the season after the all-star star break.

Staying around .500 is nice considering the injuries, but it also leaves you in NBA purgatory. You need to be either really good or really bad(unless you are the Knicks and then get bad and have no picks or the Clippers and well, your the Clippers). Mediocre either gets you bounced in the 1st round or the 12th pick. Rockets would have potentially been better off if they took a page out of the Robinson-less Spurs of '96-'97, and the payoff to that was a healthy Robinson, Tim Duncan, and several championships.
One game in and the Knicks are at least finally playing D'Antoni run and gun ball again. They're missing the playoffs, but with a real scorer like T-Mac playing with David Lee and a suitable PG in Rodriguez, they look like they will be fun to watch. Teams with good big men will destroy them though.

Game 2 of the McGrady Era must have had a playoff atmosphere, as the McGrady led Knicks score 67.

When, in 1938? How is that possibly relevant at all? I agree Cornell has a decent chance, but come on now, that's a silly thing to bring up even in a 'interesting fact' mention. It was one time and probably before our parents were born.
