ROLL CALL:

SUPERMAN!
CHLOE SULLIVAN!
LOIS LANE!
TESS MERCER! (Nope, not this week)
ZOD! (Him neither. Off building his solar tower, I guess.)
THE GREEN ARROW!
Special DC Universe Guest Star:
ZATANNA!
with special mentions of:
ZATARA!
and
CAPTAIN BOOMERANG! (via text message from Oliver to Chloe "Maniac with boomerangs")

Crazy fun follow up to Absolute Justice. Smallville did their version of SHAZAM, having a young boy find a comic book enchanted by a 20 year old John Zatara at Wonder Con, and transforming into a full grown adult superhero, Warrior Angel, with all of Clark's powers, plus flight.

Then a rub of warping the Captain Marvel stand-in that might make Alan Moore proud: if the boy feels betrayed, Warrior Angel turns evil and becomes Devilicus.

A lot of neat nerd-love stuff happens in this episode:

*Lois wears a Storm Trooper costume, and then trades it in to wear a mock Wonder Woman costume.

*We get to see Clark fight crime while on the phone, including pelting a bad guy with a thrown can, while casually talking to Lois.

*In a weird Meta moment, Clark arrives at Wonder Con dressed in his mild-mannered reporter shirt and tie and immediately bumps into a guy dressed exactly like season 1-6 Clark: primary red jacket, primary blue shirt.

*Chloe tries to get Warrior Angel to explain his origin and drops that in Smallville, a Metahuman is someone born with powers (not a mutant). Someone who gets their powers from Kryptonite is still a "Meteor freak".

*Zatanna is hot for Clark and uses magic to temporarily seduce him, but he resists because he really loves Lois. Zatanna is better, funnier, and sexier here than she was in her debut in "Hex" (which The CW repeated after "Warrior"). She even looked hotter in street clothes than she did in the fishnets and top hat.

*Chloe and Warrior Angel become fast friends and she tries to test him for Justice League membership, and possible dating, but is thrown off by how he wants to drink milk and play video games. AND apparently, Lois has Project Natal in her apartment. Lois Lane has next generation controller-free video games!

*When Warrior Angel discovers he can fly, he takes Chloe on a flight above Metropolis a la Superman: The Movie (but without "Can You Read My Mind", thank goodness.)

*When Warrior Angel transforms into Devilicus and Clark goes off to save Chloe, for the first time in the 9 year run of Smallville, CLARK TEARS HIS SHIRT OPEN AND EXPOSES THE "S" SHIELD.

*After Zatanna transforms Warrior Angel back into ten year old Alec, Clark and Alec talk about heroism at the Kent Barn. Alec gives Clark a drawing he made of the Blur when Clark still wore red and blue - wouldn't you know it, it's the Superman costume (with glasses), and RBB in the chest shield. Clark and Alec agree they like the "S" better.

*Clark confesses his makeout session with Zatanna to Lois, so Lois quickly snogs a Daily Planet employee walking by as revenge. Then they make a date to go to a costume ball with Lois making Clark agree she gets to pick his costume.

*Chloe and Oliver get drunk and get closer at the end of the episode. Whiskey and archery - Green Arrow seduction 101. (Where is Speedy?)

Final verdict: Zatanna needs to be made a series regular, and the more Smallville continues to work in the DC Universe, the better it gets.

You missed the part where Clark flies to save Chloe. Holy Shit, its no flights, no tights dead. They really need to reorganize this show to be more DC centric. I loved the background stuff at the convention like the guy in the original comic book Green Arrow outfit, a girl dressed up with the traditional Wonder Woman costume, one of the Immortals from 300 and all the Star Wars stuff. This is probably the best Chloe centric episode ever due to her not being a bitch. I hate Ollie/Chloe and would have hoped the Canary hint from Ollie would lead to other things. Zatanna is awesome. Smallville has a lot of momentum right now, but next week looks terrible as well as the continuing Zod storyline. I just hope we end Zod early this season to get to a Darkseid finale.

Dude, I wish, but he didn't fly. He just Superjumped. He's done that a lot in past episodes. They're well past any credible reasons why Clark can't fly by this point. They keep teasing him getting the red and blue suit, but I think flight is the more important upgrade to Clark's Supermanity.

When Clark opened up his shirt to reveal the symbol, I jumped up and down on my couch like a schoolgirl.

I really enjoyed this episode, and the show seems to be getting stronger and stronger as the season progresses.

I found it funny (although smart) how the Smallville characters all had such high opinions of the people attending these comic-con events (such as Lois and Chloe talking about Chloe meeting a guy at the convention), where the stock joke on most shows is that the conventions are full of nerds. Hell, even Shatner has poked fun at the Trekkies now and again.

I hope they go to a more Justice League themed show in the coming seasons. The cartoon was so great 'cause you could focus on different characters each week, which is important when you are dealing with characters like Superman. Theres only so many ways Supes can save the day without it getting repetitive. They've done a great job making Green Arrow interesting and (somewhat) deep. I sure they can do the same for the other JLers while providing us with a good Superman fix on a regular basis.

I really REALLY want to see Clark complete his transformation to Superman. I feel like we've been watching this Asymptotic curve that has been getting oh so close to that "S" axis but just.. won't.. touch.

by the way, thank you John for tying all the loose ends together with your recaps. The episodes are much more enjoyable after you know all the little nuances.

Smallville will never dis Comic Con. Every year at San Diego, Smallville packs their panel with screaming, squealing, enthusiastic, rabid fans. The actors are like rock stars at Comic Con. This past year was the first time ever Tom Welling attended SDCC and well, see for yourself:

Stuff like this really makes me like this show and these actors and producers even more.
