Very rarely does the RR card include a really good match minus the Rumble itself. RR 2000 had the best card to date even though the Rumble itself was not that interesting til Rock showed up. Jericho was in the ring when Edge returned. Edge speared everyone then eliminated Jericho. Edge to a "Welcome Back" chant after the Rumble. I do hope it leads to Jericho/Edge at Mania. I predict the following card for Mania as of now.

Edge/Jericho-Smackdown Title

Sheamus/HHH- Raw Title

Christian/Yoshi-ECW Title- quick not why not Edge/Chrisitan for Mania?

Cena/Batista

Rey/CM Punk-IC Title

MITB. Kofi/Kane/Evan Bourne/Morrison/Shelton/Dolph Ziggler

MVP/Miz-US Title

HBK/Taker II

Bret/Vince

Beth vs. Mickie

Gail vs wait for it...Kong.

A card that is probably more miss then hit, but Edge/Jericho will be the IWC reason to buy while casual will be Taker/HBK II

I'm struggling to see the "miss" on that card.

I feel like we should've seen the Edge thing coming. Vince seemingly hates giving guys multiple RUmble wins, and all the favourites this year going in would have been winning either their second or third Wm shot. Regardless, what a great show. I can't believable their are paranoid IWC folk railing against Hunter for *gasp!* eliminating someone in the Royal Rumble. If that had been Kane tossing Punk out no-one would've batted an eyelid.

The miss on the card would be HHH/Sheamus due to how badly they have booked Sheamus and how buried it will be against Taker/HBK II, Edge/Jericho and Cena/Batista. Bret/Vince is going to be akward since Bret can't wrestle due to his stroke. MITB is getting very played out. I will also add Orton/Legacy match in some form which could be a good 2 on 1 match or Orton vs. Dibease which could be a fun match as well.

I think HHH/Sheamus would be fine. Bret/Vince, too. There'd be shortcuts galore in both.

The difference is HHH is HHH and Punk is Punk. HHH cannot be hurt by getting tossed out. That's the place he's in. Punk had everyone chanting his name and then Triple H stumbled out there looking fat and annoyed the shit out of me. Yes, it is projecting based on who did what, because not everyone is equal here. I really haven't been entertained by Triple H in years and want him to go away.

??? The ones who all sell their asses off for him because they respect him so much and think he deserves more of a push than management does? Rey has kind of been kicking Batista's ass for the last month.

Agreed, Batista been making him look great. I am referring to the ones who showed on SD, compared him to Hornswaggle, and scoffed at the possibility of him beating Taker. Which, by the way, is fine booking if he's going over, but don't sell it that no top guy thinks he has a chance, and then prove them right. It shits on one of their biggest stars.

HBK winning was too obvious and no one that age should ever win a Rumble.

Shawn Michaels - 44
Ric Flair - 43

I'll amend that comment to, no one that age should ever win a Rumble unless your company is in dire straights, reeling from sex and steroid scandals, your top babyface is getting booed out of buildings, and you just acquired the number one guy and World Champion from your rival promotion. Which is to say, it made sense to do it then with Flair despite his age, but wouldn't have with Shawn here.

I didn't expect Edge to return at all; I'd read that a Wrestlemania return wasn't certain...but I guess after seeing Cena win it a few years back, the Rumble has some healing qualities.

It's nice to see him back, though.

I thought he got a huge (positive )reaction when he came out, and when he won. It was weird, as I never thought we would see Edge get that kind of face reaction again. He looked a little out of shape, and I am sure he will have a light schedule the next month or so if they want him in a big match at Mania. Which leads me to: Who does he fight at WM 26? His only issue is with Jericho, but I would be surprised if he is a champion by Mania.

Not to beat a dead horse, but the Sheamus experiment needs to end now. If they aren't willing to put him over Orton here, he has no business being in one of the big matches at Mania. He seemed to get little to no reaction from the crowd, and who can blame them when the WWE has given us so little reason to care about.

Punk's performance was the highlight of the PPV. His heel turn may be the biggest 180 I have ever made on a wrestler.

You as well as anyone knows that what matters is not the result, but the manner in which something happens in wrestling. And this was kind of perfunctory. Punk was mowing through guys, but when HHH came in he morphed back into just another guy. HHH pretty much squashed him and tossed him. There was little to no back and forth. HHH came in, beat him up some, and threw him with little to no ceremony. His crazy female friend just stood there watching it happen instead of getting involved. And the presence of a second heel in the ring did nothing to deter things.

The whole thing just felt like someone saying "okay, enough of this thing, time to move on to more important matters." And yes, I'm sure that it was exacerbated by the fact that it was HHH. But really, when you're in his position, as essentially the closest thing to management/ownership as an active participant in the main event scene since the demise of the USWA, you're going to be under greater scrutiny from observers and things like last night will only serve to further the perception that HHH works only for himself and his closest friends.

Again, a small thing, and Punk certainly came out of last night better than he was going in. Just seemed like one of those things that is designed to send a message in a way that the fans won't really notice but that the participants and those in the company would notice.

I thought the RKO/Sheamus match was serviceable, I was just surprised how pro-Orton the crowd was. Right down to the 'boo!'/'yea!' chants on the punch exchanges, they were all over Sheamus. And Sheamus did give a noticeable glance in Legacy's direction when exiting the ring, so I'm interested as how that implosion will play out.

And props to the Sign Guy for his huge Rey mask. And to Rey for acknowledging him.

The story played to me like a heel was dominating the Rumble at this point and while he was immensely entertaining, in the good vs. evil world of PG sports entertainment, this villain had to be silenced lest he continue his nefarious acts. A hero was needed to vanquish him and it happened to be Triple H. But if you'd watched Smackdown, you'd know there was already animosity between Triple H and Punk and it was very fresh, so there was a storyline reason behind why it was Triple H. Plus DX does still owe The Straight Edge Society a tag title shot so the story between them will continue. And Triple H DIDN'T toss Punk immediately, he hung on until the next guy came into the Rumble.

I agree it would have been nice if Punk, given his performance, was eliminated in a fashion befitting how entertaining he was during the match, and I agree the fact it was the big nosed, McMahon-marrying Devil Triple H exacerbated the fury of smart marks, but it seemed perfectly reasonable to me overall.

Even if he wasn't in the Rumble 30 minutes, Punk was THE STAR of the first half of the Rumble. He's one of the main things, if not THE main thing people remembered and liked about the Rumble match. The Rumble was about Punk, then HBK, then Edge, and everyone else, including Triple H, were just supporting players. Though he was never supposed to win the match, I would even argue Punk's stock rose the highest of anyone at the entire pay per view based on performance.

CM Punk was definitely the highlight of the Royal Rumble tossing a few mid-carders in the process. I absolutely loved his segments trying to convert people to his Straight Edge Society and preaching to the crowd (and what about what he did to Zack Ryder....that was hilarious).

It should be no surprise that Triple H threw out Punk when he did (though I wish Punk stayed in for about 10-15 minutes longer).

The eliminations went by too quickly but perhaps that was to set-up the Edge angle.

The actual matches itself before the rumble were sub-par with Rey Mysterio showing little credibility against his match with the Undertaker (and correct me if I am wrong but the last time Undertaker won with a Last Ride was years ago with his American Bada## gimmick).

The Orton/ Shamus match ending was a little sketchy for me but it did set up more the inevitable dissolution of Legacy. I don't think Orton is going to be a babyface, despite the reaction from the crowd during the match. Orton is too much of a natural heel and the last time he was a babyface, that didn't last too long and it was boring for him as a face.

Going back to the Rumble, Beth had no business being in the Rumble (along with Khali). Khali is Mr. Irrelevant right now and the only reason why he still has a job is because of the views the WWE gets from India.

I was quite surprised how short Triple H stayed in the Rumble, even if HBK was going to go further than Trips in the event.

Overall, the Royal Rumble could have been better but it could have been worse. If the matches before the PPV were better, the Royal Rumble in general would have been more noteworthy. The 2 best things people are going to remember from last night's Royal Rumble.....

1) How great CM Punk was during his stint in the Rumble
2) Edge returning early to win his first RR

Big returns, whether the guy is heel or face, generally get a strong positive reaction. Triple H's return in '02 made him a face, even though he was firmly heel when he went down with the quad injury. (Although the promos did help the cause in that case.)

Who are "smart marks" in this case? Because I disliked something I saw on a TV show and you thought it was fine, we're somehow in different categories? Newsflash: There's no difference between us. If this was an episode of Lost we were disagreeing on, would you be using "insider terms"? We're both commenting on a pro-wrestling result on the internet. And therefore, we are both equally lame. Let's just dissent in a civil manner and not use Brian Pillman worked-shoot terms from 1995.

For the record, I don't dislike Triple H because I think I know more about wrestling than he does or because of who he married, I dislike him because he looks and acts like a dick on television, whether face or heel, and I don't find him remotely entertaining.

I thought I WAS being civil. You're the one who's coming off as angry. And I know angry because God knows I've gone on this board many, many times with ten thousand word diatribes whenever I get pissed off about something on WWE.

I actually tend to agree with your general state of dissatisfaction with WWE based on your posts I've read. And I also don't like Triple H, not because of whatever he does or doesn't do backstage, but because I'm bored to death of him and of DX. So, no, there is no difference between us. We are smart marks. We are both lame.

I'm just a smart mark who, for once, happened to not mind whatever crime Triple H committed against the Internet on the night of January 31, 2010.

I'll admit, when HHH tossed CM Punk out I couldn't help but think "man, there is gonna be some uproar over THAT."

I didn't think it was that bad because it fit the whole form of this Rumble. I thought the match was really uneven, and it had abrupt starts and sputters. Punk was really great (though, I was REALLY rooting for Khali to say "fuck it, straight edge sounds good to me" and start tossing mofos left and right as Punk's new charisma-less Diesel AND who didn't see the "Beth Phoenix eliminates Khali via Parisian Liplock" coming?) and it was disappointing that HHH quickly dispatched him, but then HBK put HHH out in the blink of an eye, too, right?

I totally believed HBK was going to win, and then I totally believed he was going to try and finish the Rumble anyway (after he got eliminated). For all the "Punk was the star of the Rumble"-chatter, I don't see how he's anything but #2 behind Michaels in that regard.

Frankly, once HBK was eliminated I was rooting for a Batista win, but then I'm on a bit of Cena-overload and I don't watch Smackdown. I didn't think Edge was going to win in any way, shape, or form, so when he ultimately did win, I was just kind of stunned by it.

Seriously. No. This is the kind of stuff that makes me post witty rejoinders like "shuuuuuuuuuuuuut uuuuuuuuup smaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaark" when I'm not totally in control of my emotions. So, Punk is eliminating everybody and the world is okay, then HHH throws Punk out and we're all upset.

This might sound odd, but isn't that what SHOULD happen, given HHH's statement to Shawn that he was going to win the Rumble and a Title shot was just as important to HIM as it was to Shawn?

I mean, the guy went in and did his business, according to storyline.

I was watching the '07 Rumble the other day to get, like, Rumble pumped, and did remember how enjoyable it is to get to do stuff without him.

I've been kind of disingenuous because I definitely was all "boo" when Punk was eliminated, 'cause I didn't want the good times to stop rolling. But I saw it like JOrquiola, a time-tested Rumble meme where a big heel's luck runs out and he gets stopped by a big babyface.

Beth in the Rumble was perfect, Khali is a comedy act anyway at this point. It got a seven foot comedy act out of the way very quickly, established Beth as a dominant female afraid of nothing, and the roof was prepared to come off the place if she eliminated Punk.

Oh, and then they put more heat on Punk by having him hit his finisher on a woman, and dumping her during another man's intro.

Punk bashing people with a Mic mid sentence is one of my favorite things about him. He did the same when he originally turned full heel on Hardy. ("You know Jeff...over the past couple of weeks...*BONK*" "YOU! YOU Have potential! How would you like to join the...*BONK*")

The HHH/Punk elimination does not really bother me too much since DX and Punk are currently feuding. Hell, I would love to see HHH/Punk at Mania, actually. If that happens, Punk NEEDS to go over. He would be made for life.

I think SES gets the tag titles soon, but I get the feeling that they would be more of a vehicle to get Punk on both shows rather than to get the tag titles a meaningful match at mania. (Though imagine the card if Jeff Hardy even came in for a One Shot Deal...)

As far as the Punk elimination is concerned: See it this way: It NEEDED Triple H - arguably the greatest of ALL time (in the WWE Universe, of course) - to eliminate Punk and end his great, powerful performance!

Great, great show! I really liked this PPV! Christian looked great and credible, as did The Miz and Punk! They acutally kind of pushed some young guys, if you will!

Edge got a big pop from the Atlanta crowd and a MASSIVE pop from the audience at the theatre where I was watching the PPV. And an even bigger pop when he actually won the thing.
