I haven't seen this topic discussed yet, so here goes. Anyone else feel sick to their stomach watching RAW last night? I felt the same way the day after Bret Hart left the company and they turned Bret's situation into an angle. This is a man's life we are talking about here. First, we get Vince breaking character and saluting Austin (which was classy to be sure). Then Eddy gives us the fake Austin entrance for pure shock value (it did work into his storyline, but that's beside the point). Then Vince shakes in his boots because he thinks Austin is coming. Then the Rock gives an over the top interview about how the WWF is home and that anyone who doesnt want to be there is a hunk of crap! Just because Austin doesn't agree with the WWF doesn't give them the right to bury him on national television. And CRZ is right: if Austin owes us an apology, we also are owed an apology by Vince for all the crappy wriring lately. It's gonna be a while before I feel good watching the WWE again, and I will be watching...

They didn't even touch on Steve's life. They talked about his career, not his life. If they'd brought up the whole Debra thing or went into detail about Austin's emotional state, you might have a point. But they basically said Steve's gone and it's his own fault and he shouldn't have done it. All of which I basically agree with.

I felt worse for the way they were jerking the fans around about it. First you've got the Vince shoot which I thought was cool. Then the Eddy thing, which I thought was hilarious. But the whole pretending he's coming back at the end of the show thing was a dangerous line to walk. I was scared for a moment the crowd was going to turn on Rocky. But I guess it worked.

That's like saying just because WCW was challenging the WWF in the 1990s, the WWF had no right to go on RAW and tell their fans WCW sucked.

Many times Vince has tried to get Bret to show up at a WWE event. Most recently WM18. As for Austin the impression I got last night is that if Austin wants his career buried he obvously he will not wresle anymore. It may take some healing time but Vince is a forgiving man and when Austin gets his problems straight I believe Vince will allow Austin back if he(Austin) wants to come back.

The bottom line is that Austin did this to himself and if he wants back in the WWE, Austin will have to work his way back to the top.

Bottom line, wrestling's taught us to be cynical.

The saying they're not going to be there, only to run in on the main event.

The fake injuries.

The even faker retirements.

The swerves.

So when Vince announced that Austin wasn't going to be there and probably was gone from the WWE for good, the fans assumed that he'd be there.

So they fed into it. They led the fans on. But if they hadn't, the fans would've led themselves on. If Austin wouldn't have been mentioned anytime during the show, whenever there was a heel beat down, they'd chant "We Want Austin". Anytime there was an opening for him to come back, they'd expect the glass to shatter and him to come walking out. It's our nature. It's the WWF/WWE's fault. We've been conditioned to expect everything is a work.

I don't blame the WWE for teasing us last night. Anyone who knows anything, the vagueness of the angle, knew that it wouldn't be Austin. I was just hoping that it would be someone that the crowd would accept. I wasn't dissapointed in that aspect.

If they really wanted to bury Austin, trust me they could have done it. They didn't last night. If they wanted to bury Austin, they could have shown news clips of reports about what he did to Debra. They could have had Rock say he beats wrestlers, not women. They gave closure to Austin being in the WWE and explained why. With that said, if they had done a burial job on Austin, he would have deserved it.

They left the door open for him to crawl back in and beg forgiveness. Once they wake up and realize that isn’t going to happen they will start in with the cheap shots.

I guess the point I am trying to make is that it seems mean spirited to attack Austin at this point. They didn't do it when Jerry Lawler walked out on the WWF. Why not just let him go without badmouthing him? That would be a much classier move IMO.

They hardly badmouthed him. They could have been a hell of a lot meaner than they were, and I honestly expected them to be a hell of a lot meaner than they were. No Austin midgets, just a brief telling off for bad behavior and a few necessary storyline transitions.

Austin got the kid glove treatment last night. For someone who walked out on them and now is a confirmed wife-beater, he was still made to look like a hero and a good guy. Which he is not.

If only they had been so classy to some of their other outgoing superstars.

They did pretty much the same thing when Lawler left, only on a smaller scale, because Lawler isn't quite as high on the totem pole as Austin. They led off and people saw he was gone, and the new guy who replaced him took a few potshots, but nothing really as bad as could have been done. You don't remember Paul E. saying "Oh, here's a women's match, J.R. Is there where I'm supposed to scream 'puppies! puppies!', J.R.?" or even go so far as to make comments about Lawler being a lousy husband because his wife walked out on him? In both cases, to the casual fans at least, neither Lawler or Austin has been truly buried, and when Lawler got his life back in order he was welcomed back with open arms. I figure the same will be true for Austin if he can manage to set his affairs straight. Like Lawler though, it'll probably take months as opposed to weeks..

Actually, I only remember Heyman coming out on his first RAW and saying Lawler did a classy thing by standing up for his wife. Also, I think King left in a bit more of a dignified way than Austin. King didn't just leave without telling anyone, right? I'm pretty sure he at least told the WWF he wouldn't be there to do TV instead of leaving and not saying anything to anybody.

As far as swerving the fans go, that's one thing, but I think they showed a hell of a lot more respect to Austin last night than he deserved, considering everything that's happened in the past few months. He probably got the classiest WWF sendoff since Mick Foley.

Vince just has to stop mentioning Austin. The Austin era is done, finished, finito. It's in the past. T Focus on the future. The more Vince mentions Austin, the more the casual fans will think that this is just some new angle. Face it, the majority of fans out there do not read the 'net, and do not subscribe to the Wrestling Observer. Most fans out there do not know everything involving Austin. These fans are probably saying "I can't wait for Austin to come back and kick Vince's ass!". As long as Vince stop talking about Steve, fans will start to realize that Austin is gone. All Vince is doing now, is setting the fans up for dissapointment.

Yeah, and those same non-smark fans without internet access are the reason why Vince had to mention Austin so much last night.

Your top big name for the Raw brand walks out on you. You manage to downplay it the evening of the walkout, and throw together a decent show all things considered. Over the next week, said star goes on to be involved in a domestic dispute, and at this point, even if the walk out itself could be resolved fairly easily, bringing the star back would be bad PR at the moment.

However, you've got all these fans who have no clue about how or why Austin left, or even knew that he was gone. They haven't heard the reports of spousal abuse on their local news yet. You HAVE to address the issue somehow. This isn't the 80s, where you could just "suspend" someone or whatnot, let them fade away, then pop up in a rival promotion 3 months down the road. This is the "information age", and everyone and their brother, one way or another, will find out the "truth" from somewhere. They might hear it from their mother's best friend's hair dresser's nephew's teacher's husband who knows Dave Meltzer personally.

The fact is, sooner or later, everyone's going to hear about the whole Austin incident - from the walk out to the spousal abuse. Vince has NO BUSINESS whatsoever touching on the domestic incident, and he didn't. However, Vince has every right to go out on Raw and give his side of the story. He can't just sweeps Austin's departure under the rug. This wasn't Henry Godwin leaving or some other insignificant nobody. This was, arguably, THE top star in WWE. This was the guy who they built the company around when they were in bad financial shape.

They had to address it in one way or another, and all in all, I can't say fault them for the way they handled this situation. Vince never came out and said that Steve Austin was the anti-christ and that we should all hate him. He merely said he's gone, here's why, maybe one day we can work this out, but we've got to move on. The Eddy/Benoit/Flair thing had to be done, just to tie up the loose ends in that story. AND, they even had to do the "Austin's on his way" BS...otherwise, everyone might've just changed the channel once they realized Austin wasn't going to show up.

Like it or not, Vince did the right thing here.

Tricking those people into thinking he's coming back just because you want to get every last bit of ratings out of his name isn't the way to tell people he's gone. The two actually have nothing to do with each other.

For Vince to do what you say he should, which is address the casual fans about how Austin's gone, he should have just had a 10 minute promo about it near the top of the show. Actually... he did do that... too bad his ego kept him going throughout the rest of the night.

I remember when Bret Hart left and they kept teasing about how "Bret Hart will be here soon!!!" Bret said it was a good example of how pathetic the writing is that they KNOW he's not coming back, and yet ALL they can manage to write is stuff involvong his name, even though he's not with them anymore.

He may have also said "Schmozz"

I'm still half-expecting to hear that Austin's gone and shot himself in the next few days. Sorry if that makes me sound callous, but obviously there's *something* wrong with him.

Maybe he's whacked out on pain-killers.

Maybe he's just whacked.

Maybe he's just drunk.

Whatever the case, the story will get out. I bet I'll see it on the cover of People at the grocery store next week.

It was pretty classy of Vince to give such a big send-off to a guy who turned his back on him. Especially after the events of the weekend, which I'm sure he was well aware of, even if the majority of the audience wasn't. I guess he figured he didn't need to bury Austin, because Austin was doing a good enough job of it on his own.
