I think it's fair to say that Letterman's opinion may be somewhat tainted by the fact that he spent most of this century losing to Leno in the ratings when then went head to head, while he's been beating Conan's ass pretty much from Day 1 (which, incidentally, was months prior to the premier of Leno's show at 10:00). It's pretty much no contest as to whom Letterman would prefer to compete against if he gets to choose.

Leno certainly could have. But instead he chose loyalty to the network that made him a rich star, and took their offer of the show at 10:00. But now that same network, who forced him out of the Tonight Show, now wants to use him to force his replacement out. Unless you picture Jay Leno as some sort of Machiavellian genius who set this whole thing up last spring, it's pretty easy to see why he would be pissed at NBC.

As for my own personal opinion, I'm in agreement with almost all of what John Orquiola had to say a few posts prior. I have no stake in who hosts which late night show, as I rarely watch any of them (that's why God invented cable). Personally, I hope Leno tells NBC to shove their whole network, leaves television all together, and spends his remaining days working the showrooms in Vegas. Leno doesn't need NBC's money, and I'm sure he doesn't need this bullshit.

Leno started the bullshit. NBC didn't tell him he was going back to 11:35 pm, he demanded it. I have no sympathy for Leno and I hope he utterly fails in this. Letterman and Conan have a mentor/student relationship since Conan took Dave's spot. I am sure Dave taking shots at Leno might have something to do with ratings or the fact Leno is once again manipulating NBC to screw over another talk show host on their network like he did with Dave. Leno's PR move is a sad cry for help from someone who wants attention. Late Shift got it right, Jay is someone who carves attention and has to be liked. Well, he is got the attention, but people are sick of him. A TV Guide poll finds 83% agree with Conan, so I don't think its just the young people out there who are pissed either.

Here, let me ask you an even easier question: If Leno could "demand" (your word) NBC move him back to the Tonight Show, how did he lose it in the first place?

Yeah. I'm firmly Team Conan but there's been no sign that Jay wanted away from 10et and back to The Tonight Show except for that throwaway quote two months ago where he said "if they wanted me there, I'll go back." Should he have said that publicly? No. Did he "demand" it? There's been no proof of this.

Would an internet based show technically be "on the air"? Not that I want Conan to be internet only, but wouldn't that be an option while the other legal stuff gets sorted out if he leaves NBC?

Here's my thing:

Leno said in '04 that he was planning to retire. He didn't want this kind of thing to happen, and so he said, and NBC agreed to, "I'll go five more years with The Tonight Show, and Conan'll take over in '09."

But then Leno pulled a Brett Favre in '07 and was all like, "Wait, I'm not ready to retire." And he made noises about going to another network, forcing NBC to scramble around to find some way to keep him around. He's the reason for the mess. So I say, get rid of Jay, bring back five dramas a week (and some good dramas), and keep Conan at 11:35.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

This pretty much nails why Leno's almost as much as a villain in this situation as the NBC suits are. (I blame the suits more because they're clearing trying to have their cake and eat it too, but Jay created this mess when he began dropping hints that he'd pull a Favre.) It's not like there are 31 other networks in need of a better late-night show host.

The right thing would be for Leno to step aside, but I don't think it'll happen.

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

I thought (and I don't have a source on this) it was that Jay's contract was up in '09 and NBC decided to go with Conan as the new host instead of renew. Jay was OK with it at the time because 5 years seemed like a long way off and he would have had a good run by then.

So it was NBC's, not Jay's, decision to move on. Jay was amicable about the decision at the time, so it seemed like he was "retiring". And because it was NBC's call, that led to Jay now saying things like, "NBC canceled us at 11:30, then they canceled us at 10:00" (From his monologue a few nights ago.), which is kinda sorta true and kinda sorta not.

Conan did exactly what Jay did: "when the other guy retires, I get the gig." That was the terms for not jumping elsewhere back when he had the chance. But NBC brought Jay in on it and he agreed with the plan, rather than keeping everyone in the dark like the first time, and Conan didn't (and didn't need to) try to undermine Jay like Leno's agent did Carson.

The Brett Farve analogy is quite apt, but I honestly have little sympathy for Jay. Shouldn't have agreed to retire, then shouldn't have agreed to the inane 10et plan.

(from one of the articles)

"The median age of Conan’s audience last week was 45.6, nine years younger than Nightline's" 55.0 and 11 years younger than Letterman’s 57.3."

Nightline's viewers are younger than Dave's? Wow.

People are saying they don't feel bad for either because they are both multi-millionaires, but are forgetting that both shows have large production staffs.
Most of Conan's show has the original staff from New York, who uprooted their families and moved across the country and bought new homes. These people are not millionaires and it's a shame they have to get caught in the middle of this.

I agree completely. Like the African proverb says, "When elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers." Sad but true.
