Sony announced a shocker - they're rebooting Spider-Man entirely with a new filmmaking team and new stars!

Spider-Man will be a teenager in high school again. (Hopefully, they won't redo the origin. We all know it. Maybe they can just reference it and start fresh with a new story.)

The all-new Spider-Man movie ("The Amazing Spider-Man", maybe?) hits in 2012.

I couldn't be happier. I hated 3. I know I wasn't excited for more of Raimi's vision for a 4th, 5th, and 6th. To me, a reboot and an injection of youth and a new vision is a great idea.

Maybe we can even get a HOT Mary Jane this time?

(Of course, this interest will immediately dissipate if Sony hires a shitty director or shitty stars for the next Spider-Man.)

I don't see this coinciding with the report that John Malkovich has signed on for Spider-Man 4 as the Vulture.

Aww I wanted Raimi to have a second chance at ending it well. Have they said anything about what the new Bryan Singer X-Men is gonna be like yet; is that teenager stories too? I wish he could just proceed from the end of X2.

For me, a reboot is welcome, but going back to high school is completely unnecessary. Go the Incredible Hulk route and retell the origin during the opening titles. Then, you can jump right into the story.

EDIT: I misunderstood the story. I'm OK with adventures in high school, I just don't want them to tell the origin again.

Oh come on, they can't reboot the franchise this quickly. It's only been ten years since the first movie. This would be like if the original Superman movie started all over again in 1989. At least after The Quest for Peace, they had the sense to leave well enough alone and leave the series idle for a good 20 years. Rebooting Spidey this quickly is a bad idea. I don't think a lot of fans are ready to start fresh so soon.

Why not just leave the Spidey franchise alone for a while. It's not like the Avengers films can't carry Marvel through the decade.

I really have no problem with it ... my son will be 7 when it comes out, so it'll be neat for him to experience a "new Spider-Man" story.

Because Avengers = Marvel and Spider-man = Sony. Avengers may carry the Marvel Comics flag throughout the decade but that doesn't help Sony make money.

Doesn't the rights also revert back Marvel if Sony doesn't use Spider-man for a certain amount of time? Maybe it's still enough time to take a break but does it surprise me that Sony is going to reboot a series that will almost definitely make money? Of course not.

Spidey 2 is my favorite Marvel movie to date and high on the movie of this decade. Going back to high school has been done to death and one of the things I agreed with part one was make Peter a dork, give him powers and get him the hell out of high school. I am not sure who they are going get to play Peter, but good luck, because Maguire even with the stupid dance in part 3 has been almost iconic in that role.

I was trying to think if there was a popular teenage red-headed chick out there but it's so out of my demo now.

She doesn't have to be a redhead. Kirsten Dunst is blonde and dyed her hair red 3 times. It's open season for casting that role, or a new Gwen Stacy if Sony wants to retire MJ as the main love interest.

Yay! Boot an actual, talented director in favour of appealing to the teen crowd with a completely lazy retread! And if they weren't willing to play ball with Raimi, you can bet that whoever they DO hire will be there to be pushed around.

SPIDER-MAN 3 had its issues, but a lot of them were caused by Sony not stepping the Hell back and letting Raimi do what he wanted. This is just such a completely transparent attempt to appeal to the younger crowd that it kills any interest for me right off the bat.

The best thing for me about Raimi's movies has been the casting. Besides Dunst, everyone seemed born to play their respective roles. Yes, Spiderman is a nerd. Yes the Green Goblin is creepy-looking even without his mast on. I thought they had a good thing going with that crew and am sad to see it changed.

But you never know; Batman surely benefitted from the shake-up.

Word. To me, Spider-Man 2 and The Dark Knight are two sides of the same coin, the finest examples of what two kinds of comic book superhero movies could be. Spider-Man 2 crystalized what I think a Spider-Man movie ought to be, straight from my memories of being 10 and reading the original Stan Lee and Steve Ditko comics collected that my dad got me. Spider-Man 2 is a tough act to follow (see Spider-Man 3).

Did Raimi still have gas in the tank? Probably. I hear he was motivated to go out strong after 3's poor reception (not that 3 didn't rake it a ton of money anyway despite most people's complaints). My understanding of the situation is that Raimi told Sony he couldn't make the production schedule for a 2012 release; nor was Sony totally on board with Raimi's ideas for Spider-Man 4.

Despite his mostly successful track record and what he did not just for the Spider-Man franchise but for setting the general "rules" and expectations by audiences for superhero movies this past decade, I personally don't believe Sam Raimi is the ONLY person capable of directing a Spider-Man movie.

And while Tobey Maguire did an amazing (pun intended) job of being the Peter Parker for a generation, I also don't think he's the ONLY person to play that role. (Hell, he's getting pretty old to play Peter Parker anyway. Peter should be a teenager or at least a young man. Maguire is in his 30's and is starting to show his age.)

Surely there are a lot of talented directors out there who could pick up where Raimi left off and bring a new vision and energy to Spidey. I hesitate to name names, but looking at Batman, 6 years ago who could have guessed what Christopher Nolan could do with Batman?

It all depends on who Sony hires to direct and star. Hopefully, it will be someone good and they aim to maintain the quality Raimi brought - because it's the quality of the Spider-Man movies that brought audiences to theaters in droves. If they hire shitty people, then I'll be pissed. But until then, I see no reason to not be optimistic for a new cinematic vision for Spider-Man.

(Oh, none of this is to say I don't have a healthy distrust for Sony and their ability to screw up a reboot. But unless they actually do screw the reboot up, I'm hoping for the best...)

I'll never understand the X-Men 3 hatred; it was quite good. To hell with the fact that the original director didn't come back because he signed on to do a lackluster Superman movie.

I don't recall the "vision" for Spider-Man 4-6, can anyone pass on a note concerning that?

I wonder how well a "Batman Beyond" approach to Spider-Man would go. I thought the entire idea of Batman being too old to continue, and passing the reigns to someone new was a brilliant story.

They could always adapt the Spider-Girl comics, which actually would be a great idea in the hands of a good director.

It only hit me now that this means we won't get a Bruce Campbell or Ted Raimi appearance.

I do think they oughta reboot it without retelling the whole origin again. Like (already mentioned) the last Hulk movie did.

Just make sure you stay away from Goblin/Oc stories and maybe still go with the Vulture or something, just to make sure you dont get compared too heavily to movie 1/2.

And all of the disgruntled fans will be back on board again the moment they reveal good villains or actors (they still scan go for a Kraven the Hunter story or something)

The risk of making him younger again is indeed that it could be aimed at a younger crowd. But that doesn't mean it wouldn't be fun to watch for the 20-30+ people.
