Last week, Rey Mysterio cheated Batista out of a Beat the Clock Challenge victory. Special Consultant Vickie Guerrero announced they would face off this week, and the winner gets world champion Undertaker at the Royal Rumble.

This week begins with Batista demanding a spotlight to accompany him to the ring. Seems like nothing's changed in the New Year, he says, particularly GM Teddy Long continuing to screwing him over. He wants Teddy to explain himself or Batista walks. Instead, Rey takes the stage. Rey calls him a crybaby and calls his actions payback for Batista messing up Rey's title match against Taker on Christmas. He wants the match tonight but thinks Batista fears another loss. The fans agree. Batista insists he's eager for the match, but Rey promises victory.

Kane vs. Dolph Ziggler
Hosts Matt Striker and Todd Grisham say Kane is still fuming about his match with Ziggler last week. Ziggler controlled and hit his finisher, but neither man advanced to challenge Taker. Kane overpowers him to begin and controls with a headlock and seated dropkick. Two count only. Unlike last week's match where Ziggler pursued an amateur wrestling style, Kane is wrestling to his strength (which is, um, his strength). He puts Ziggler up top. Ziggler fights him off and connects with a weak second-rope dropkick. He clobbers Kane and seeks a neckbreaker, but Kane fights it off. Ziggler kicks the knee to set up a kneeling DDT. That gets two. Ziggler with a running snapmare for a pin. Kane reverses a running hiptoss, and Ziggler tries a sleeper. Kane knocks him off in the corner and shrugs off a tornado DDT try. He hits the avalanche, but Ziggler twirls out of the sideslam, goes to the ropes, and runs into a boot. Kane pins for two. There's the sideslam for two. Kane goes up and hits the flying clothesline. He wants the chokeslam now. Ziggler fights it off, hits the Zig Zag, and sits on Kane for the cover. It only gets two. Instead of going for a second, he leaps up for a sleeper. Kane quickly goes to the mat. Ziggler is scissoring the ribs with his legs. Kane stands back up, and the both roll outside. Ziggler still has the hold, and the ref counts. Ziggler minds the count and slides back in at eight. Kane is too weak to beat the count, and Ziggler gets the win. This wasn't up to par for either guy, but it begins new momentum for Dolph.

Backstage, women's champ Michelle McCool and Layla kiss up to Beth Phoenix. They botched their planned interference and failed to give her a win over Mickie James. They have a gift: a trough of greens made for Piggy James. Beth ain't havin' it and reminds Layla they have a match tonight. Michelle, wearing a Team Lay-Cool shirt, is glad she's not facing Beth tonight.

Chris Jericho tells The Hart Dynasty he's still the face of SmackDown despite the RAW defeat at the hands of DX. Two weeks ago, the Dynasty rose to his challenge to assert themselves by attacking Jericho. He admires that. Natalya says it's their time. They cite Vince's embarrassing attack on Bret Hart on RAW and again claim they are better than the best. Jericho is happy to see the swagger.

R-Truth/Cryme Tyme vs. Chris Jericho/Hart Dynasty
We take an ad break before the match begins, making this the second consecutive week we've ditched the breaks that occur once someone is tossed to ringside.

It's disheartening to see Seth McFarlane in an ad for the Tooth Fairy, the type of Rock vehicle he normally would ridicule on Family Guy.

This match continues the extended rivalry of the two tag teams, but it looks like the Harts will finally get their chance to move up the card. Although, there's only one team they can rise against: DX. The only other team on SD is Wang/Slam Master J. Kidd and Truth start by trading hammerlocks. Truth hits a backflip dropkick and tags in JTG for a double flapjack. JTG covers for one and brings in Shad Gaspar for the alley-oop avalanche. Shad follows with a corner clothesline and a running elbow. Truth tags back in, and Kidd tags in Jericho. Truth flips, flops, and splits before dropping him with a bicycle kick and a cover. He runs into a boot in the corner but comes back with a back kick, and out goes Chris. And, back to form, because he touched the floor, we go to ads.

We come back with Shad dominating Jericho in the corner. He press slams him flat, but falls outside when Smith pulls the top rope down behind him. Natalya punts him in the ribs while Kidd distracts the ref. Jericho escorts him back inside and gives him the boots. Kidd tags in with more stomps, and Jericho sneaks in a shot from outside. Kidd kicks Shad's back for a cover. Jericho comes back in -- notice Smith is barely a presence as yet -- and loses an exchange of forearms. Shad comes off the ropes and right into a dropkick for two. Kidd comes back in again and kicks the knee to keep Shad reeling. He knocks Truth off the apron and runs into a clothesline from Shad.

Both men are flat and there's the hot tag. JTG is in, and Smith again stays out of it as Jericho gets the tag. JTG (Striker: "Just That Good, Jedi Times Gucci" hits the somersault shoulder block and keeps Jericho down. Floatover Helms Street gets two. The cover is broken up by Kidd (Is Smith on probation or something?), and Truth comes in to put Kidd outside. Kidd stays on the apron until Shad boots him off. Jericho shoves Shad outside. JTG rolls up Jericho for two as Smith helps Kidd to his feet at ringside. JTG goes up for the reverse Rocker Dropper, but Jericho easily catches him for the Walls. It's the full-on Liontamer version too, and JTG taps quickly. Smith moved the rope and nothing else, but he joins the others to celebrate on the ramp. His measly participation isn't a plot point, just an observation by your humble correspondent.

Next Monday's RAW features guest host Mike Tyson and, presumably, a quasi-explanation by Vince for dropping Bret with a grapefruit punt.

Tony Chimel introduces CM Punk, accompanied by Luke Gallows, and Punk intends to follow up on last week's promise to convert an audience member. Punk's beard is getting Lincolnesque. He asks for a volunteer to embrace Straight Edge. He points out a lucky fan and asks Luke and security to let him get to the ring. He calls himself James. He sits in the middle of the ring while Punk kneels next to him. "Endear yourself to me," Punk demands. James declares he'll clean his system and refuse temptation. Punk requires him to do one more thing, and Luke unveils electric clippers. James fears for his hair, and Punk puts him back in the chair. Punk announces it's a clean slate, and there goes the hair. Punk announces his evolution and strength. James takes Punk's hand and thanks him. Punk welcomes the newest member of the Straight Edge Society. Luke and Punk hold up his arms. Does this happen to someone else next week? Luke gets Matt Hardy for the former's first post-conversion singles match next.

Matt Hardy vs. Luke Gallows
Matt's entrance is a short trot downstage, a tiny hop, and a walk to the ring. He's ailing. He has to be. Punk taunts him with the Slammy he won by retiring Jeff, and this might be the only way -- unspoken -- they now acknowledge the biggest angle of Punk's career. Jeff popping up in TNA was not smart for a lot of reasons. Luke shoulders Matt down and stomps away. An elbow levels Matt, who then evades a knee and works on Luke's leg. He stretches it on the ropes and fires off the floppy punches. Luke blocks a suplex, drapes Matt over the top rope, and knocks him to the floor. Matt goes backfirst against the apron before getting back in the ring. A standing backdrop suplex gets two for Luke. He applies a reverse full nelson and a chinlock. Matt punches out for a sunset flip, and Gallows awkwardly rolls back for a quick one-count.

Gallows mounts with punches and a knee to the head. He works him over in the corner before going back to the chinlock, ended by a jawjacker. Gallows corners him again but misses a Stinger Splash. Matt climbs up and flies into a pinning moonsault for two. He hits a kneeling clothesline and the neckbreaker drop. Luke evades the bulldog after a corner clothesline, but Matt drops him with a tornado DDT. That gets two. Matt goes to the second rope, but Punk distracts him, allowing Gallows to drop Matt with a boot. Gallows Pole ends it. As by-the-numbers as you can get for a muscleman victory.

I like Punk a lot, and it's too early to say the Jeff angle is forever verboten. Neither he nor Matt is doing anything but treading water, and it's stale. Both guys need to move on. But Jeff, at least until last Monday, remained one of the two three faces on this roster behind Rey and Taker. It's time for Punk to raise up a midcarder to the main event, and I don't think Matt is healthy enough for that push.

Backstage, Teddy congratulates Maria for making the next Celebrity Apprentice. Vickie says she's too busy to do the show and shrugs off Teddy's insult. Hopefully, he can play the backstage Escobar role from now on. Vickie asks Maria to sell the new Mattel toy line as practice for Apprentice. Teddy takes another shot at Vickie, and Khali interrupts. His translator says Vickie's toy reminds him of a cow. Vickie isn't especially evil in this skit, and the fat jokes come off mean.

Beth Phoenix vs. Layla w/ Michelle McCool
Beth wants revenge for Team Lay-cool costing her a win to Mickie James last week. Beth got the last word then by Glam Slamming James after teasing a team-up. Layla doesn't want the match. Beth lifts her up and casually rolls her off a shoulder to the mat. She punts Layla and demands Michelle get involved. Beth drags Layla back in, and Layla tosses off some kicks. Beth misses an avalanche, and Layla jumps on her back. She's rolled off and yanked up by her hair for the Glam Slam. Beth forgoes the usual hair-flip pin in favor of an angry cover. Michelle gets in the ring, and Team Lay-Cool double teams her. Mickie makes the save. She and Beth lock eyes, and Beth smiles for what looks like a handshake. Mickie, however, kicks her in the mush, and down goes Phoenix.

The RAW Rebound nicely condenses the Bret comeback, leading to Vince's boot of villainy.

Backstage, Intercontinental champ Drew McIntyre tells Josh Matthews (who now looks like a Straight Edge convert) he dominated John Morrison last week, and John attacked the ref out of frustration. He promises to be the first IC champ to win a Royal Rumble. Morrison walks up and dares Drew to talk trash to his face. Drew remains silent, and John imitates his accent. Drew won't take the bait and says he's moving onto bigger things. Morrison slaps him to start a brawl. Morrison is hamstrung by the face attitude; his promos were miles above this last year.

Rey Mysterio vs. Batista -- No. 1 Contender's Match
My TiFaux says this segment is starting at 1:47 of a two-hour show. That's before entrances. Dave eschews the pyro tonight and instead enters to a darkened arena and his lone spotlight. Dave is impatient, and Rey runs away from to set up a slingshot dropkick to the floor. Dave misses a clothesline out there, and Rey gives him a few shots before sliding back in the ring. Batista follows and catches Rey running off the ropes and drops him in the corner. A ringside sequence and Rey running into a power move: That's 50% of their match content since the summer. Rey is shoved across the ring to the other turnbuckles before eating a backbreaker. Batista now prowls around him before hitting a backbreaker drop. Rey crawls to the corner, catches him with a boot, and springboards into the hurracanrana position. Dave blocks, but Rey punches him from atop and drags him into position for the 619. Batista slides out, catches a leaping Rey, and slams him into the ringpost. we go to ads.

Rey and Batista are up top when we return. Rey knocks Dave down and hits a frogsplash. He lands on Batista's shoulder, and both guys are hurt. A replay sequence shows Dave working the torso on the floor during the ad, and now Rey springboards into a deep standing spinebuster. The pattern holds yet again. Another spinebuster, and Dave is in the zone. He sets up for a spear, and it hits a staggered Mysterio. Now he calls for the bomb. He turns the thumbs, traps Rey between his thighs, and GONG.

Lights out (uh-huh, dance dance dance), and when they come back up, Batista is on the mat and clutching his head. Rey gets up first and hurls a flurry of punches. A seated dropkick sets up the wheelbarrow bulldog. Dave is flailing but catches Rey for the Oklahoma. He's still woozy, and Rey pops the 619. Rey waits for Batista to get into position for the finale. Another gong, and when the lights come back up, Rey is down. Both guys are flattened. A third gong takes out the lights once more, and the stage heralds the Taker's entrance. Fire, smoke, music, and ... end credits? We're out. We never see Taker. we also get no decision in the match.

I imagine the backstage booking for the match consisted of "when the lights go down, so do you," and quick reassurances that no one will notice Taker was never there.

An odd episode.

I saw the last match. Pretty dumb ending, but maybe it works with the 6-12 year old market.

What is wrong with Batista's head? It's all weird and bumpy.

CM Punk sure does bring a lot of crap to the ring with him. A Slammy, a steel chair, hair clippers, Luke Gallows...

In the PG climate, no one's out and out stating it but it seems pretty clear Luke Gallows is a gay character. His finisher the "Gallows' Pole" and his cover are a dead giveaway.

Chris Jericho busting out the old school Lion Tamer actually made me do a spit-take. I wish Stone Cold Steve Austin were on color because he'd actually call it "the Lion Tamer!"

I'm really intrigued by this idea of Chris Jericho leading the Hart Dynasty and how that might impact Bret Hart down the line.

The Divas booking has been great the last few weeks. They didn't rush Beth's face turn and are working the "enemy of my enemy is eventually going to be my friend" mistrust between Beth and Mickie extremely well. I hate to say it but McCool has played her role in this to perfection. I'm really looking forward to the Beth Phoenix-Mickie James Megapowers team stomping on McCool and Layla when it happens.

Teddy Long had some pretty good zingers on Vickie as well. He must have borrowed the King's Henny Youngman jokebook.

When the Great Khali said Vickie looks like a cow, does that mean he worships her?

Number of Jeff Hardy mentions: 0. How disappointing. I was hoping for one last mega-burial from Punk. Well, clippers being introduced can only mean one thing. A Hair-vs-Hair match is nigh. I'm guessing it happens at Wrestlemania, but against who? Not against Matt, I'd hope.

That six-man had some bizarre segregation going on. All of Smackdown's black wrestlers vs. all of Smackdown's Canadian wrestlers. Just an odd factoid.

That had to be the single-dumbest "ending" to a main event match on this show in a while and the worst way they could build up to a three-way at the Rumble.

Matt came back way too soon from every injury (and worked thru that icky abdominal issue too!)... I wish the guy had taken the proper time to be 100%...

I read an interview with Punk a few months ago where he suggested that a.) He'd love to face Rey Rey at Mania and b.) "Boy I sure could use a haircut..." He started growing out the beard, etc. soon after... So I figure we're working towards hair vs. mask at WM.

I think the haircut aspect of this is the beginning of the desired Wrestlemania feud Punk has talked about in interviews, him vs. Rey Mysterio in hair vs. mask.

edit: I think I opened my reply box before the post before me said the exact same thing. Sorry! Suffice to say, I agree.

I wish I could give Rey more than a snowball's chance in hell of coming out of his three-way feud with UT and Batista with the title. A Hair vs. title match with Punk sounds a lot more fun than hair vs. mask.

If Undertaker/Shawn was for the title, that would add a new wrinkle to their rematch, and Shawn could win the Royal Rumble to lock in the match like Vince said he'd have to. If Batista works with Cena, that could be for the title too ... except it's Cena's turn to beat Batista, so that would mess the titles around. And then there was that thing about Cena saying he wouldn't lose again until he won the world title. Or what if Cena wins the belt from Sheamus and defends against Batista??? But that means HHH would wrestle Sheamus with no belt? That doesn't sound like something he'd do. If they really did convince Rock to wrestle Cena then Batista and HHH could have their first meeting in five years. I don't know, man. I don't know. I just hope Kofi Kingston wins Money in the Bank and Yoshi Tatsu is in it.

Old people, unite!

I keep thinking about the balance of SD. The main event faces are Rey and Taker. Morrison is the top midcard face, followed by Kane, Truth, Matt, and Khali. The top heels are Batista and Jericho, with Punk as the top midcard heel eclipsing Drew.

But the roster seems heel-heavy with Ziggler and Knox and the Harts, and a new hot good-guy could help take the burden off Rey (who's gonna blow a knee again with this workrate) and Taker (who doesn't work every week).

So, again, I have high hopes for Edge's return.

I'm loving the idea of Punk vs. Rey, hair vs. mask for Wrestlemania. I'd probably be better as hair vs. title since otherwise it's a bit too obvious that Rey wins, but even still, I'm down with any angle that would get us a Rey/Punk match at the big show.

So why DOESN'T Jericho always do a Lion Tamer as a finisher? Sheer laziness? That move looks painful and brutal as hell.

Cena vs. Batista could be for a unified world title. If HHH/Sheamus has to be for a belt, they could elevate the US and IC titles so the holders could be seen as each show's "champion" (with the unified world champ as a godlike interloper roving from show to show).

From what I recall it's because the Lion Tamer is too good a finisher. It doesn't allow for the opponent a decent chance to counter or crawl to the ropes. There's just more they can work with using the Boston Crab. As much as that sucks by comparison.

I thought I remembered Jericho saying somewhere that he changed it because he had trouble putting bigger guys in the Lion Tamer, and he wanted a more consistent-looking finisher?

So, does Shawn get his win back and break the streak? I would say he shouldn't. Will this show who has more sway in the back or is this one already pretty much agreed upon?

Is it too far-fetched to wish that Jericho should be in this title extravaganza? What a way to go if Jericho gets in the title mix and Edge comes back and wins the Rumble. Perhaps this is wishful thinking but it would make more sense instead of Rey or Batista face or win against 'Taker.

I thought he said (maybe in his book?) that the Lion Tamer is actually painful, and that he changed it to the crab for safety reasons, specifically for the bigger guys.

I think Shawn has already said he is taking time of after Mania again, so if the match happens, and is for the title, then the rematch would be more anti-climactic than last year. Unless the time of story was just a ruse to throw off the smarks. Hopefully so.

The ending of the main event was so lazy, and way too 1994 for my tastes. If Taker (the Champ!) can't even bother to show up for the show, why not just book some kind of draw, or double DQ to build to the 3 way at RR? Or just announce the 3 way after Rey interfered last week in Batista's match?

Taker's title reign has been a joke since he beat Punk. If a guy won't show up consistently then he shouldn't be champ. Taker/Shawn II doesn't need to be for the title since we all know Taker is going to win. Rey vs. Punk regardless of the stips is something I could get behind. I do want Edge to win the Rumble since its the one thing he hasn't done yet and Jericho deserves to be in the ME spot this year. I just don't see a united belt happening even though Batista/Cena for the title is one of the last dream matches they have.

More important than anything else, Layla was such an incredible performer on this show. Her scared version of her entrance pose was genius.

I liked the finish because Undertaker always mysteriously knocks out the one heel. This time he did it to the other guy, and it made sense because Rey 619'd him after their match.

I'd like to see Jericho/Edge for the title too but I don't think it's likely. I don't think Edge is ready to come back in time to win the Rumble unless he's bluffing about it like Cena in 2008.

"Taking time off after Mania" doesn't necessarily mean he'll immediately disappear the next night though. If it called for him to wait around for a month to drop the belt I'm sure he would. You might be able to get the best of all worlds if Shawn won the Rumble, challenged Taker, Taker lost the belt to whoever in the Elimination Chamber, and Michaels didn't take the title shot because he wanted to wrestle Undertaker.

But I also think they learned their lesson from last year and aren't going to risk putting any other match than that on last, and they always want to end the show with a title match.

I think it's already pretty much agreed upon, but it's brilliant for that exact reason. With his reputation, it plants that seed of doubt in people's head that there's no way Shawn will lose clean two years in a row.
