I was impressed with Gilbert's play at quarterback, but it sucks that Colt McCoy went down. I don't think it would have changed the outcome, but it could have. Either way, McCoy had a great career and was a great college player and I felt bad for him.

But like I said, Garrett Gilbert was impressive in leading the Longhorns back within three, but he just turned the ball over too many times. And Alabama's rushing attack was too strong. I'm not a Texas fan by any stretch, but I really, really didn't want to see Alabama win. Oh well.

From here it's an anti-BCS rant, be warned:

One thing that really bothers me, that's not directly related to the game though: Joe Schad from ESPN tweeted this after the game:

SEC: First conference with four consecutive national championships w three different teams

Now, I don't want to see a playoff in college football - and I know we've covered this debate plenty of times here - but I also hate the BCS, and this is why. There's something very disingenuous about voters who determine the national champion heaping praise on a conference, and then heaping more praise on that conference when it reaps the inevitable rewards that come from the first round of praise in this setup. The SEC was great for maybe two seasons, but in 2006 and this year it certainly wasn't better than the other BCS conferences by any significant margin. The SEC teams went out and won those BCS title games, to their credit, but that still doesn't live up to the hyperbole surrounding the conference, in my opinion. If that's the criteria, how does Alabama losing to Utah last year fit in?

That's not to say all six BCS conferences were equal this year, but they were all fairly close, I'd say, and I don't think the SEC was top-to-bottom the best. It's between the SEC and the Pac-10 this year, I'd say (before the bowl games, anyway)

Anyway, my point... oh yea, my point is, voters have so much power now that I think this kind of self-fulfilling prophecy is inevitable. Voters decide the SEC is the best, so they make the SEC the best. None of that's to say Alabama didn't have the best season this year, just that the love affair with the SEC is old, annoying and, in my opinion, off base. Here is a column from 2009 by Bill James criticizing the BCS with some other arguments I agree with. James uses those points to argue that a playoff is necessary, but I don't think it follows from his column: His points only support the theory that the BCS is kind of stupid. I think I support simply abolishing the BCS and letting the bowls work out their own deals like it was years years ago.

Congrats to Alabama for reaching the national title game next week against Boise State!......wait, what's that? Oh, then never mind, this exhibition game was meaningless.

Also! Here I am to make fun of myself for some horrible preseason predictions:

    1) The Florida Gators will repeat as national champions. Urban Meyer is a smug son of a bitch. But I guess I would be too if I was as good at my job as he is at his. The Gators have probably the best coach in the country, or at least one of the top three. They return the best player in the country. The SEC has, in my opinion, experienced a slight decline from a few years ago when it was head and shoulders above all the other BCS conferences (it probably still is, but the Big XII was pretty close last year). I think the Gators will go undefeated this year.

I guess I am glad I was wrong, but Saban and the Tide winning isn't much more enjoyable. Man did the Gators offense struggle this year. And Tebow crying after a loss again was pretty lame.

    2) Tim Tebow will win his second Heisman Trophy. With apologies to Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy, Tebow is the best quarterback in the game by far, and I hate admitting that. This year, he cements his legacy as one of the greatest players in the history of college football. I hate Tebow with more passion than is healthy. I hate that he wins all the time. I hate that he won the Heisman as a sophomore. I hate that he seems so friendly and humble. Most of all, I hate that he's a Gator.

But damn I wish he was on my team.

I'm definitely glad I was wrong here. Florida Gators in Tim Tebow's three years as a starter: didn't go to SEC title game; won SEC title game; lost SEC title game.

    3) Oklahoma will beat Texas and win the Big XII, earning a national championship game rematch with Florida. Sam Bradford is an amazing quarterback. That's all the insight I really have to offer. Colt McCoy is obviously damn good himself, but I think Bradford is better. That's ultimately what this boils down to.

Wrong again. That's 0-for-3. I don't think Oklahoma can blame this on Bradford's injury.

    4) Michigan will go to a bowl game. I think last season was understandable, no matter how disappointing it might have been in Ann Arbor. I mean, in going from Lloyd Carr to Rich Rodriguez, the Wolverines underwent about as radical an ideological change as is possible in a head coach. But Rodriguez is a good coach, and had big second years in Toledo and Morgantown. Competing for a BCS birth is out of the question, but I think he'll have this team bowling.

Wrong again. I still think Rich Rodriguez will get Michigan on track next year though - by which I mean to a bowl game.

    5) Illinois will play in a January bowl game. I think the Illini's Rose Bowl trip two years ago was clearly the result of a crazy season in which everyone who was supposed to be good just kept on losing. But I think Ron Zook is a good coach, and, while everything I've read about them suggests the Illini have some major questions at running back and all over the defense, Juice Williams has been great at quarterback every time I've seen him, and I think he'll have Illinois competing in a not-so-strong Big Ten.

Not even close: 0-for-5. How did Juice Williams look so promising two years ago and so hopeless as a senior? Why haven't the Illini fired Ron Zook yet?

    6) Alabama will return to the SEC Championship Game. I can't believe the Crimson Tide went 12-0 in the regular season last year. They just didn't look that great to me - though I only saw two regular season games and the SEC championship game, plus the Sugar Bowl. But the schedule only gets easier this year. Last year, they played Georgia, LSU and Tennessee on the road; this year, the Tide play LSU and the Vols at home and don't play Georgia. I'm just not that impressed with the SEC after Alabama, LSU and Florida. Alabama won't go undefeated in the regular season this time, though.

I'm counting it. 1-for-6!

    7) No Mountain West Conference team will reach a BCS bowl. I think the Mountain West is stupid to make a pillar of its anti-BCS act the argument that it's as good, or nearly as good, as the weakest BCS conferences. Other than the transition year of 2004, after Miami and Virginia Tech left the Big East but before Louisville, USF and Cincinnati joined, I'd say last year was the first time the MWC champ might actually have been better than the Big East champ. And even that I don't think is a given - I'm not as impressed with Utah's Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama as some people seem to be.

And after the top of the conference, the Mountain West is as weak as any of the non-BCS conferences, save for the awful, awful Sun Belt conference. It would take BYU, Utah and TCU doing what they did in 2008 every year for this argument to hold water, and that's just unlikely. The conference and school presidents should instead focus their arguments solely on the inherent disparity of the current system. Because when the conference champ has two losses this year and doesn't go to a BCS game, it will make the conference look silly.

I was wrong, but I still stand by my argument the the Mountain West can't compare to any of the BCS conferences. It's a shame Boise State and TCU ended up playing each other instead of BCS conference teams.

    8) USF will win the Big East and go to the team's first BCS bowl game. No. 8 seems like a good place to bury the homer pick. USF returns four-year starter Matt Grothe at quarterback and defense end George Selvie, one of the best returning defensive players in the country. In a conference lacking any real star power after those two guys and also void of a clear preseason favorite, I think it's Grothe in particular that makes the difference as he turns in his best season to date. The Bulls will enter the season with their fourth different offensive coordinator in as many seasons, but the players seem really excited about what they're doing now in what is probably a make-or-break season for USF in terms of national perception.

And now there's a 50/50 chance Jim Leavitt will be fired in the coming week(s), which makes me even sadder. 1-for-8.

8b) USF will lose at Florida State but beat Miami in Tampa. One great thing about being a fan of such a new team is that almost every year, we get to experience "the biggest game in school history." The trip to Tallahassee in September is a huge game, much more exciting for USF than for FSU I'm sure. It would easily be the biggest win in school history, even if it wouldn't be the best opponent the Bulls have beaten.

As for Miami, I expect USF to be the favorite in that game, so I don't think that's too crazy of a pick.

I got it backwards. Miami was way better than I thought they'd be, and it looks like they're going to be pretty good in 2010. A win in Tallahassee made USF's poor Big East season a little easier to swallow, but not much. 1-for-9.

    9) Ohio State will win the Big Ten ... and actually win a BCS bowl game. Terrelle Pryor looks like the real deal. And by all accounts, he looked even better in the spring than he did last season (as he should, being a sophomore). Jim Tresell is too good of a coach for this streak to continue.

Bam! I nailed this one. I'm so smart! 2-for-10.

    10) Someone other than USC will win the Pac-10 conference title. I don't know who it will be. Pete Carroll and co. have had a monopoly on that conference's BCS birth for pretty much the entire decade. But the Trojans almost didn't win it last year, needing Oregon to knock off Oregon State late in the season to secure the bid.

Maybe not the boldest of predictions, given there were nine teams that could have made me correct. But I'll take it. I like Pete Carroll, but it just seemed like it was time for that streak of conference titles to end. It's impressive the way they've dominated that conference in the past decade.

3-for-11! You guys know who to turn to next time you need a clutch prediction - though maybe user carnage would be a better source.

SPECIAL BONUS PREDICTION: If South Florida does in fact go into Doak Campbell Stadium on Sept. 26 and defeat the Seminoles, I will never let wmatistic hear the end of it, perhaps incorporating a victory dance outside his home in Austin (Hey wmatistic, what's your address? I'm just curious.) into my celebration. If FSU wins, I'll remind him the Seminoles were the favorites playing at home at were supposed to win that game, so who cares? :)

Well, USF won, but I didn't really gloat and I didn't do a victory dance outside wmatistic's home, which is surprising because I always love an excuse to go to Austin.

That's what i did, he got hurt, Bama put up 6, and I decided to watch the replay of TNA Nitro that I didnt see Monday due to work. That included with no NBA on TNT today, made for some very underwhelming TV.

Such a shame to have it start off with that injury. The Texas defense actually played an outstanding game overall, taking away the pass all night long. To me it wasn't that Bama shut it down in the second half and let Texas into it, it was that they couldn't do anything but run all night anyway. And in the second half Texas pretty much shut that down too and Bama's only scores came on a two yard drive and another short one after turnovers. For that reason I have to believe if McCoy played Texas likely would have won, but we'll never know.

I watched in a movie theatre and the Texas fans were not pleased with Saban going for a meaningless TD when he could have just knelt and ran out the clock at the end, but whatever.

Gilbert has a strong arm, just no timing and the play calling for much of the game was questionable in my view. You bring in a freshman and have him throw over the middle all night?

Oh well, sad way to end but with the changes in Tallahassee I can't wait for next year.

And Bucs, I was shocked you never really did go all Gator fan on me after that USF game, which was kind of you. I'll have to remember that if FSU can win the next one.

In just checking out the final AP poll, I'm kinda stunned Boise was put fourth. Last year Utah moved up to second at the end I think. Not that I think Boise is better than Texas, but I don't get that vote. I'd have put them second.

Difference from last year is Utah destroyed an Alabama team that was #1 going into the SEC Title game, while Boise beat a very good TCU team. Throw in Florida demolishing an unbeaten Cincy and Texas getting a probable out from the voters due to the injury of McCoy. it is understandable Boise only moved up to 4.

Texas' coaches choked the entire first-half away. You don't have an "oh-shit-Colt's-out-but-here-are-the-plays-Gilbert-likes"-package? Really? The Longhorns seemed like they were going to try to win 6-0.

I remember seeing an NFL Films-clip of the Drew Bledsoe-era Patriots with Bledsoe and Brady (then a rookie) on the sidelines, with Bledsoe asking Brady about his "favorites" - plays he liked in the gameplan. After a couple drives I thought if you asked Gilbert his "favorites" you might get a list of movies or something.

(Now having said all that, but the time Texas started coming back, I was rooting for them like crazy to come back and pull off the miracle comeback, especially with Colt on the sidelines. I can't remember feeling so sick for a guy on a team I don't particularly care about.)

Bama dodge a bullet with McCoy going out since most of those early FGs could have been TDs. I think a lot of credit has been to given to Bama's Defense for beating the shit of the Texas O-line for most of the night. Ingram did what was asked of him even with his own injury problems and seem to have a quite 2 TD 100 yard game. I think Boise State being number 4 is a joke and proves yet again, the pollsters are a bunch of idiots. TCU was a tougher opponent then Cincy. And with the new head of the BCS saying the world will end with a playoff system, get used to these fairly bullshit titles.

I'm glad Texas came back and made it close in the end. I spent most of the game being pissed off that I was watching a glorified scrimmage. I felt awful for Colt McCoy and possibly even worse for Gilbert. There's no way to know for sure what would have happened had McCoy not gotten injured, but personally I think those first 2 FGs would have been TDs, and Bama would have had to come back from down 14-0 instead of 6-0. Totally different ball game. Plus I can't help but feel McCoy would have done a better job getting Jordan Shipley involved earlier in the game.

He definitely did. Either because he's not down with celebrating before the game is over or because those jokers actually HIT him with the Gatorade cooler.

I had an argument with a Bama fan about this. He seemed to think if they had just taken some knees Mack Brown would have used his timeouts. I call bullshit. On top of that, did anyone else see Bama's QB McElroy throwing up that anti-Texas upside down hook 'em Horns hand sign? Pretty classy couple there, Saban and McElroy.

Texas only had one timeout at that point, not enough to stop Bama from running out the clock. Plus, why risk a fumble when you can just take a knee? It wasn't smart or nice.

Didn't catch the sign but others have mentioned it too.

My own predictions for review and half-ass explanations.

1. Florida will lose in the SEC game. I still don't understand how the SEC is this awesome conference, yet Florida has a weak schedule. What?

-Well, I got this right. 1 for 1.

2. Penn State wins a back to back Big Ten. They won't go undefeated, but will beat OSU at home which will be enough to win the Big Ten. OSU will slip along the way to someone else.

-1 for 2. I should get partial credit for predicting PSU won't go undefeated.

3. Colt is your Heisman winner. Its his turn with the trophy and will beat Stafford.

-1 for 3. Didn't see Ingram coming.

4. Texas wins the Big XII. They win, but they don't go undefeated.

-2 for 4. Should have not said that thing about being undefeated.

5. USC will lose three games. One, Pac-10, One to OSU and finally to Notre Dame.

3 for 5. Wrong about the games, but right about USC losing three games.

6. USC wins the Pac-10. They are still the lead dog and will be until someone can recruit worth a damn out there.

3 for 6. My faith in the USC machine is way too much.

7. Kiffan will be a story all year and win only one meaningful game. ESPN is already hyping him up for his radical styles and name calling. I think we found the NCAA equivalent of T.O. He will upset one team though.

3 for 7. To be honest, I don't know how to judge this one since Kiffan did win some games, but lost the games he talked smack about. The real story was again Teabow.

8. SEC will destroy each other. Like the Big XII last year, one team will be up for a week or two and then drop a major game. It will lead to an SEC winner with at least one loss maybe two and looking out of the title game.

3 for 8. The Big Ten fell victim to this instead of the SEC.

9. The smaller confrences will force their way back to the BSC. I am not sure what some of these teams have to do to be perfect and get into a title game, but they will at least force one BCS' bowl games hand.

4 for 9. At least right about the one bowl game didn't expect them to be one.

10. Notre Dame will go undefeated in the regular season. The schedule is made easy even with USC, Boston College and the Michigan teams. If Charlie ever had a time to win a title its this year. I think the Hawaii game was a breakout game and they should carry it over to the USC game. I will agree it does look too good to be true which means if they lose more then 2 games, Charlie is gone.

4 for 10. Probably, the worst pick of the lot. Sadly, I was right about him getting canned if he lost more then 2 games though.

40% not great, but better then nothing.

I understand what you're saying but as a biased SEC fan I have to say it's about time the SEC got love. I know that everybody thinks the SEC gets love year after year after year but that's not true. As recent as 2005 there was all this "style points" bullshit and conferences that sucked were getting ranked higher for beating bad teams by a lot of points. Hell, Auburn went 13 - 0 in the toughest conference one year and was left out of the Championship game and Florida came awfully close to not making the championship game when they won their first title just because Michigan was beating up on crappy Big Ten schools. So I'm glad to see the SEC get teams in the National Championship now.

Is the SEC overrated now? Yeah. LSU ended up 17th and Ole Miss was a joke. Next year Florida loses...well, everybody. It is time for the SEC love to stop but on the other hand I think they teams that won the last four National Championships were clearly the best teams so I don't know that there is a whole lot to argue about there.

This is my problem with people who are anti-BCS (not you necessarily but mainly the "experts"). Out of Boise State, Utah, BYU and TCU I don't think any of them were as good as people said. Boise State is overrated because people now know who Boise State is. Utah is for the same reason. BYU and TCU are overrated because they are on the same level as Utah and everybody thinks Utah is great now.

Sure, in the BCS there are more teams overrated due to their name and conference and to a greater deal, but these non-BCS schools are also now overrated because of their name. How is that any better?

What's even worse is that these anti-BCS people champion teams like Utah and Boise State and then they don't know a single thing about any other non-BCS school. I bet none of them know that Troy has won the Sun Belt four years in a row, they probably all thought East Carolina beating Houston was an upset when it wasn't really and the words Dan Lefevour have barely crossed their lips.

These same people that say not to ignore the non-BCS schools think that 99% of the bowl games featuring non-BCS teams are not interesting to watch. Well, why should we care about the non-BCS schools if you're admitting none of them are worth watching?

Most of the people that run their mouths about the non-BCS schools don't deserve to be listened to because they are completely clueless about the very topic they are talking about. They just run their mouths about Boise State and Utah being included because they want to be different because they think that somehow makes them cool.
