Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it is that time of year once again: the fourteenth-annual Fuzzies! (To put that in perspective, the first year I did these I was a fifteen year old high school sophmore and I scrawled out the nominees in a lunch period because I was annoyed by the Grammies the night before. Bill Clinton was President and it was his first term. The nominees largely consisted of The Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica and Weezer before any of them started embarassing themselves on a regular basis and No Doubt was nominated for Best New Artist. It's been a while.)

OK - voting begins now (obviously) and lasts until Sunday, January 17, 2010 at 12:00 noon. Get me the votes however you want to - in this thread, in a personal message, in an email, on Facebook - whatever you want to do, as long as I get them by that date.

Everyone gets TWO votes in every category. You can cast them both for the same nominee or split them between two choices. Write-in votes will be noted and ignored.

Kirk, crackers are a family food. Happy families. Maybe single people eat crackers, we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know. It's a market we can do without.

Just bumping this in case anyone else wants to vote in the next week - "turnout" has been lower than usual this year everywhere I post it. I think my taste is getting too pretentious. Oh well.

I've been away, and I'm only just getting caught up with the board...glad I didn't miss this. To me, the year belonged to Ben Lee and Brandon Benson, so I don't know if that's less pretentious, or more, or what. B^) But let's see what we can do:

BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST:

Hey, I'm old and out of it...I don't really know these guys. But I've heard some Phoenix on the radio and it sounded pretty good to me, so they get both votes.

COVER SONG/PARODY of the YEAR:

I'm telling you, Ben Lee covering "Ben Lee" (a song which totally blasted him) totally belongs here. But of the nominees, I'll give my votes to the handome Weird Al Yankovic.

COMPILATION/SOUNDTRACK of the YEAR:

I saw both (500) and Watchmen on the plane rides, and I thought the former was the better movie, and I guess the better soundtrack too. 1 vote for that, and one for War Child, mostly for Duffy's take on "Live And Let Die".

MUSIC VIDEO of the YEAR:

It's not like I ever see music videos anymore. I mean, nothing on my cable really shows them anymore, so the only way I would would be YouTubing them. But anytime I can vote for the Muppets, you bet I will.

SONG of the YEAR:

One vote for Phoenix, and one for Bruuuuuuce.

ARTIST of the YEAR:

Well, I loves me the Beatles. And Paul's show at Citi Field was probably the musical high point of my year. ("Mrs. Vandebilt"~! "Calico Skies"~! "Only Mama Knows"~!) Sure, my votes will be the Fab Two.

ALBUM of the YEAR:

One vote for Phoenix and one for Pearl Jam.

FUZZIES HALL OF FAME NOMINEES:

Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and the Kinks. Three of my all-time favorites, bar none. And I've said before that this Hall needs to get blacker.

RESULTS!

BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST
4th RUNNER UP: Raphael Saadiq (2.33%)
3rd RUNNER UP: The Limousines (6.99%)
2nd RUNNER UP: Florence + The Machine (18.64%)
1st RUNNER UP: Cage The Elephant (30.29%)
WINNER:

PHOENIX
(41.94%)
Shoulda been Florence, but Phoenix is more than worthy.

COVER SONG/PARODY OF THE YEAR:
4th RUNNER UP: "Sunday Morning" - Beck (10.85%)
3rd RUNNER UP: "Straight To Hell" - Lily Allen (13.02%)
2nd RUNNER UP: "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" - She & Him (15.19%)
1st RUNNER UP: "Seven Nation Army" - The Oak Ridge Boys (17.36%)
WINNER:

"WHATEVER YOU LIKE" - "WEIRD AL" YANKOVIC
(43.4%)
How do you not vote for "Weird Al"? This category name has "parody" in it entirely because of him. He now becomes the first artist to "three-peat" in a Fuzzies category - winning in 1999 for "The Saga Begins" and 2003 for "Angry White Boy Polka".

COMPILATION/SOUNDTRACK OF THE YEAR:
4th RUNNER UP: War Child Presents Heroes, Vol. 1 (4.76%)
3rd RUNNER UP: The Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack (11.9%)
2nd RUNNER UP: (500) Days of Summer soundtrack (16.66%)
1st RUNNER UP: Inglourious Basterds soundtrack (30.94%)
WINNER:

WATCHMEN SOUNDTRACK
(35.7%)
I dunno - this was a hard one. Watchmen did make great use of classic rock staples - I don't know if "The Times, They Are A-Chagin" well ever sound quite the same. Honestly, that "War Child" album might be the best of these, but considering as I never heard of it until I started doing research for these awards, I'm not surprised it didn't get a lot of votes.

MUSIC VIDEO OF THE YEAR:
4th RUNNER UP: "Treat Me Like Your Mother" - The Dead Weather (7.14%)
3rd RUNNER UP: "Strawberry Swing" - Coldplay (11.9%)
2nd RUNNER UP: "Kids" - MGMT (14.28%)
1st RUNNER UP: "Sugalumps" - Flight of the Conchords (16.66%)
WINNER:

"BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY" - THE MUPPETS
(50%)
I think - I'm not 100%, but I THINK - this is the biggest winning margin in the history of the Fuzzies. You don't fuck with the Muppets. A few notes - this is the first time a video made specifically for Youtube has won this category instead of a "proper" music video (although I never saw any of these anywhere besides Youtube anyway.) And while technically the Muppets are first-time winners here, the video for Weezer's "Keep Fishin" won in 2002 in which the Muppets were the stars.

SONG OF THE YEAR:
4th RUNNER UP: "Heads Will Roll" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs (2.38%)
3rd RUNNER UP: "Medicate" - A.F.I. (9.52%)
2nd RUNNER UP: "Kiss With A Fist" - Florence + The Machine (19.04%)
1st RUNNER UP: "The Wrestler" - Bruce Springsteen (21.42%)
WINNER:

"1901" - PHOENIX
(47.6%)
No complaints here.

ARTIST OF THE YEAR:
4th RUNNER UP: Wilco (9.08%)
3rd RUNNER UP: Karen O (11.35%)
2nd RUNNER UP: Bruce Springsteen (18.16%)
1st RUNNER UP: Phoenix (27.24%)
WINNER:

THE BEATLES
(34.05%)
I know - nominating the Beatles felt like cheating to me too - but that period where the Rock Band game came out and the remastered versions of their catalog came out and Beatlemania briefly ran wild like it was 1964 all over again, well, it couldn't be ignored.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR:
4th RUNNER UP: "The Hazards of Love" - The Decemberists (10%)
3rd RUNNER UP: "Wilco (The Album)" - Wilco (12.5%)
2nd RUNNER UP: "Backspacer" - Pearl Jam (15%)
1st RUNNER UP: "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" - Phoenix (30%)
WINNER:

"IT'S BLITZ!" - YEAH YEAH YEAHS

HUGE shocker here - Phoenix had been dominating the awards this year - and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs had been doing horrible ("Heads Will Roll" got a grand total of one vote for Song of the Year!). As little sense as it makes, I'm not about to argue with the results. "It's Blitz", in my opinion, was the best album of 2009 and took the Yeah Yeah Yeahs from a band I was fairly indifferent towards (I watched Santigold's set instead of theirs at Bonnaroo, for example) to a spot somewhere in my top ten. Honestly though, those were five solid albums this year and I'd have been happy seeing any of them take what I consider to be the "big" award.

FUZZIES HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES
LOSER #3: The Band (2.64%)
LOSER #2: Al Green (3.96%)
LOSER #1: The Flaming Lips (6.6%)

TO BE RENOMINATED NEXT YEAR:
4th RUNNER UP: Neil Young (7.92%)
3rd RUNNER UP: The Kinks (9.24%)
2nd RUNNER UP: B.B. King (10.56%)
1st RUNNER UP: Jerry Lee Lewis (11.88%)

WINNER #3:

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND
(14.52%)

WINNER #2:

STEVIE WONDER
(15.84%)

WINNER #1:

MICHAEL JACKSON
(17.16%)
Of course Michael Jackson. He probably should've gone in years ago but I, like everyone else, forgot about the music (which had all but faded away behind, well, the creepy alleged pedophile). Stevie Wonder - more than a worthy choice to (finally) start getting some Motown in the Hall. And the Velvet Underground! HUge last minute comeback there - the beginning of the week it looked like they were going to wind up in that "no nomination next year" bottom three. Considering I personally spent all three of my votes on them (figuring MJ was a lock and that they were the most worthy other nominee), I'm quite thrilled.
