For reasons I've never been able to divine, we get a lot of Ralph Macchio traffic here. On a mostly unrelated note, the trailer to the Jaden Smith/Jackie Chan 2010 remake of "The Karate Kid" is now available at www.karatekid-themovie.com - or embedded right here:

Thanks, Sony!

6/11/10 is the current scheduled date of release. Now you know.

1.) Miyagi/Chan seemed a bit too eager to teach Will's kid to fight. I guess 1984 = "Karate is not just for fighting" while 2010 = "Karate is for kicking Chinese punk ass." Good to know.

2.) That rap song added up to more than 100%.

3.) No young Elizabeth Shue.

I'm not sure Fort Minor qualifies as rap, but it's close enough I guess. Also, I'm pretty sure it's a "X% + Y% + Z% = 100%" kinda thing. ESPN has played it enough over the past three or four years to give me time to ponder this, sadly.

On an unrelated-but-similarly-bizarre note, we used to run a property site that every month managed to attract significant numbers of people looking for "Billy Joe Armstrong topless". I put such things down to both the internet and people being clinically weird.

On topic, I had no idea such a movie was in the works. Between this and the A-Team movie it's reassuring to know the 80s are still fashionable. "Jacket" is the new "wax" it seems, and it does look a little more "kick some ass already!" than I remember the teachings of Miyagi.

This was also the first time I've knowingly heard Fort Minor, I think. I can't fault their math. Their music, another matter.

Except the whole point of "wax on/wax off" was to demonstrate that one needs a good work ethic and a lot of discipline in order to master the martial arts - where as this is more like "you need to comfortable in high humidity" to be a karate master.

I don't know... I still maintain that having keeping the cast the exact same except bringing Elizabeth Shue as the love interest, and, thus turning this into a Karate Kid version of the Mary Kay Letourneau story would be far more interesting.

No No No No No.... This is all kinds of wrong. 2010 will most definitely be a Cruel Summer.

This movie is ignorant on a couple levels. Some thoughts:

the good:
Jackie Chan gets to show off his kung fu chops again and not in a novelty "I'm a nanny superspy!" lameass way.

bad:
Why in the hell are they using the karate kid name? They're all doing KUNG FU. *Not* karate. Jackie Chan doesn't know karate. This is the most glaring error (or ignorant) aspect of the movie. It doesn't make any sense to me, especially since the movie looks like it could stand on it's own without relying on the '84 reference.

Daniel-san was a way more sympathetic and likeable character that you actually could connect with and wanted to see succeed. I'm guessing jaden is just a Will Smith Jr. which makes him cocky and...well, boring...and probably borderline annoying.

There is no way that a group of Beijing kids are going to come across as bigger assholes or bullies than the Cobra-Kai. That's because there are no bigger assholes than ripped white dudes who are bullies and think they know martial arts.

(If they follow the original's plot) it's kind of unbelievable that a foreigner will accelerate so much and beat people at something they practically grew up with (kung fu). At least karate was a foreign enough entity in the original movie to make it a quasi-plausible victory (and even then Daniel got his leg obliterated).

sidebar:

Fort Minor must be getting crazy publishing money off that song. It's in the trailer for almost every "rise up and fight" movie these days.

Wax on/wax off > jacket on/jacket off

If they keep the "Get him a bodybag!!" quote from the original, I will forgive everything else and give this movie 5 stars.

It says so right here in the wcw handbook!

I am afraid to know what kind of comedies you like if this is considered awful. This is far and away the best comedy of the year.
