Of course it does, but not every year with a team that's ranked #3 and trying to go undefeated. I wasn't talking about the practice in general, I meant this specific instance. It happening in the Meinieke Car Care Bowl doesn't make a difference either way, but we're talking about the Sugar Bowl.

If he leaves, Kelly will be the second Big East coach in three years to leave his team as it was preparing for a BCS game. Granted, Cincy being undefeated means they have a little more at stake than West Virginia did in the Fiesta Bowl, but it's not totally unprecedented and it's not like a Sugar Bowl win is THAT much more meaningful than just getting to the Sugar Bowl. Not for a head coach who has just taken Cincinnati of all schools to back-to-back conference championships.

I think what it shows is that the system is not fair, obviously. The man has done everything he's can to make Cincinnati a national power and has nothing to show for it but 2 Big East titles and maybe a Sugar Bowl win. He does the same thing at Notre Dame and he becomes a legend. He probably realizes he had as much a same shot as winning a national title at Central Michigan as he does at Cincinnati.

Psycho is on point. The BCS bowls are set-up to take either a Pac-10/SEC/Big 12/Big Ten school or Notre Dame instead of ACC or Big East school. Those schools are known to travel well and they are big money makers via the cable companies. Kelly realizes that and is more then willing to make the switch. Now having said that, I don't know if he is the right guy for the job. He has the offense on all cylinders, but his defense is a bit weak which is the same thing that got Charlie fired. ESPN was making a big deal about him supporting pro-choice Democrats as well. I love how people lump Catholics into the Pro-Life category automatically.

I don't think that's *bad* because they are clearly the best conferences. Though, I disagree with your assertion about the Pac-10, because they have a relatively shitty bowl set-up because none of the southeastern-located bowls are interested in taking a Pac-10 team precisely because they are know not to travel well. That's why the eastern-most Pac-10 bowl is in El Paso.

And in SUPPORT of the BCS, is this excerpt from Stewart Mandel's mailbag on SI.com:

For all the BCS haters, could you please publish what the bowl matchups would have been under the previous system?
-- Sam, Atlanta

I know I've done this in past years, but it's a lot tougher this year because teams like TCU and Cincinnati didn't finish in the top four very often in the old bowl system. And that's not to mention, would this be Southwest Conference-era TCU or Mountain West-era TCU? Since Texas was also in the SWC, I'm going to treat the Horned Frogs as a bowl free agent for the purposes of this hypothetical.

Rose: Ohio State vs. Oregon

Orange: Nebraska vs. Florida

Sugar: Alabama vs. Georgia Tech

Fiesta: TCU vs. Boise State

Cotton: Texas vs. LSU

I tried to find a place for Cincinnati, but the Big East didn't come along until the early '90s when we were already into the Bowl Alliance/Coalition era. Under the old, decentralized system, I don't think one of these five would have taken them. The Orange Bowl, with its Big 8 ties, would have snapped up Nebraska, and with no two-teams-per-conference limit, the Cotton would be free to take LSU.

On the one hand, that's just gross. On the OTHER hand, I GUESS if TCU/Boise State was a blowout and 'Bama and Texas struggled with their games, under this scenario the Fiesta Bowl winner *could* have won the national title. (Is that better? I say no.)

lotjx, the problem with Cincinnat's defense this year is that they lost practically everyone from last year's defense which was quite good. He's an offensive game planner but the defenses have usually been decent under his watch. Don't forget Cincinnati was picked in middle of pack in the conference due to all their losses from their defense last year.

The Big 12 and Big 10 were really better than the ACC and Big East this year, JayJay? Really? Actually, I'd argue the Big 12 was the weakest of the 6 power conferences this year. Outside of Texas, a North team ended up the best team. A north team. That needed to beat Kansas State to clinch the division. That lost to Iowa State. Uh huh.

Also, while the BCS is better than the old bowl system, it's still not great. TCU vs Boise would NOT have happened in the Fiesta under the old system, I firmly believe that. BYU played in the Holiday Bowl the year they won their national title.

EDIT - Actually that article makes no sense. He's treating Texas like a SWC team but ignoring Boise wasn't even in DIA then? Must be a typo on that Fiesta pick. Maybe TCU vs Penn State?

EDIT EDIT - Um, there could still be two national champions this year really. Hell, there was just a split title in 2003. The BCS doesn't guarantee a single national champion.

I was thinking generally, not specifically about this season. Generally the ACC and Big East are the two weakest of the BCS conferences.

And some would argue that they DON'T guarantee at least one national champion.

EDIT: Added the "don't". Was really tried.

I think that's a bad way of looking at it, though. It should be based on this current season, not historically. The NFC West is hardly what we'd call a dominant division, but it's had 2 super bowl participants since 2005, one more than the esteemed NFC East. (and if we count previous seasons, it's had many Super Bowl participants)

What, what year has there been zero national champions? The BCS was created in large part because there was 2 national champions in 1997.

Technically speaking, there is no NCAA champion in football at the 1-A level. There's the AP national champ, and the coaches poll national champ, and a bunch of other less known national champs, but not an NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPION. There are NCAA champions at the 1-AA, Division II, and Division III level. That's why every sport gets a similar trophy with the round NCAA logo but the BCS champ gets the crystal football.

On the Pac-10: UCLA does go to Washington DC to play Temple in front of 43 people unless Army upsets Navy.
If you want to slot everyone pre-Arkansas jump from the SWC to the SEC, Cincy would be in the Metro with Florida State and Louisville.
Oklahoma State probably would have been in the Orange Bowl instead of Nebraska, as there would be no divisions in the Big 8.
Could flip a coin between Texas and TCU in the Cotton, but remember, odds are one or both are on probation, since the whole conference was on probation by the end.
Georgia Tech would be in the Citrus Bowl, as that was the ACC bowl tie in, which was why Georgia Tech won half a national title playing in the Citrus Bowl. That didn't change until Florida State came on board.
Penn State ends up in one of the bowls as an Independent. Cincy might as well, since the Metro had no bowl tie-ins.
And, most importantly, there would be 15 less bowl games.
BYU won the national title in the Holiday Bowl because the WAC champ was tied into that bowl.
