Man...this sounds like a really bad idea...

IGN: WWE Comics Bodyslam Industry

December 1, 2009 - While there currently is no WWE television programming on Wednesdays, there will soon be comic books based on Triple H, Undertaker and John Cena, courtesy of a new partnership between Titan Publishing and the WWE. With that dark, mid-week void filled, WWE fans have a reason to get out of bed.

The deal, which forms the imprint WWE Comics, is currently set to last for 20 issues. The "flagship" title of the endeavor will be "WWE Heroes," which is set to launch March 23, 2010.

Here is the official description of the series as provided by Titan:

"[WWE Heroes] will take the biggest WWE Superstars and Divas beyond the spotlight of the squared circle and into a brand new fictional universe. Issue #1 reveals an eternal rivalry set against the backdrop of the history of WWE. Why is the ruthless Shadow King so obsessed with WWE?
What is the reason for his eternal and supernatural war with the Firstborn? And could his ancient opponent really be a member of the WWE roster?"

Heroes is being written by Keith Champagne (Justice Society of America, Green Lantern Corps, World War III) with art by Andy Smith. Liam Sharp is provided a variant for the first issue.

Nothing is out of bounds in the realm of comic books. Hell, I spend weeks reading about dead superheroes returning from the dead as cosmic zombies. But even I'm skeptical about this endeavor. If WWE Films couldn't get me interested in wrestlers set in a fantasy world, what hope would comics have?

On the other hand, if by some small chance this were to succeed, could we get Keith Champagne on the writing staff? He can't be any worse than the stiffs that are writing storylines now.

I hope this goes into "Big Apple Take Down" territory.

They've done the comic book thing before. I remember Kane, Taker, and Austin had comics during the Attitude era. WWE shouldn't get anywhere near graphic novel territory or they may be doomed to repeat...

Wasn't it Eric Bischoff and Billy Kidman? Don't I suck for being able to find this in seconds? (Well....I DID *write* it.)

Now, seriously, let us never speak of this again. IT'S BEEN TEN YEARS.

I get the feeling I already know what the next posts for Wrestlecrap are going to be. That said, they've done this even more recently in the magazine, right? I remember a preview for the new WWE kids magazine or kids section where they had a comic for the Hardy Boys just a year or two ago. If I remember correctly, they were almost as entertainly bad as the Warrior comics.

The late 90s gave us many wacky wrestling-related comics.

The Nash comic?

All the Chaos stuff?

For someone interested in good comics with a wrestling theme, I'd recommend:

- Whoa Nellie by Gilbert Hernandez
- Sonambulo by Rafael Navarro

Interesting that they're trying this narrative route. They canceled quickly the short comic stories in the official kids magazine (John Byrne was working on them). This comic seems aimed at teens.

El Borbah! is also excellent (by Charles Burns).
(Luchadore detective in a one-armed singlet fights androids and other weirdness.)

To see images from the comics and some commentary by a friend of mine: http://www.comicsalliance.com/2009/12/02/titans-wwe-comics-will-most-likely-be-terrible/

As I told him "Most likely be terrible" is waaaay too charitable.

Yeah, one panel has Triple H telling Cena that he doesn't have "the balls" to face him ... doesn't seem like very kid-friendly language to me.
