I've started getting into sports games again; it all started on a boring day when I popped in my sons' copy of ESPN NHL 2K5 for our PS2. I was hooked with how much fun it was, and outside of a few weird glitches (freezing during the season mode when injuries were active), I enjoyed creating my dream team and winning the cup.
Now, I'm working on NHL 2K7, but there are some bizarre bugs in that too, with the game freezing up if the profile is being saved right at the end of a game; it's still a fun game.
Coincidentally, I bought NHL 05 from EA Sports and stopped playing it, I put the game on it's easiest level (to gauge how it works) and within two minutes, the opposition scored on me five times. Whuuuh? Even with automatic goalie control, to boot.
Now, EA and 2K both release games for the major sports: what do people here prefer?
Well, actually, they don't. EA has exclusivity with the NFL, and 2K has the same deal with the MLB license. The MLB 2K is apparently trash, but then they do bring out fun stuff like the Power Pros series, which is the best recent baseball game ever made.

I can't give a high enough recommendation to MLB '09: the Show. Otherwise, I'm an EA guy.

ESPN NFL 2k5 was so good that EA ran so fast to monopolize it they left a cartoon dust silhouette behind. Also, it was $19.95 the day it was released. Loved that game.
In hockey games, particularly recent ones, EA wins hands down. It's really no contest. NHL 09 justifiably won an awful lot of "Sports Game of the Year" awards, and NHL 10 built on that. The 2K games just haven't been able to keep up, and are resting most of their marketing on their motion-control Wii version (which I haven't played as I don't have a Wii).
Maybe 2K is better on the Wii, I don't know, but on the 360/PS3 NHL 09 and 10 are the kings of the genre.
I have to go with EA on this one. How bad are 2K's baseball games? Earlier this year I paid $40 for EA's MLB 2005 four years after it came out over paying $19.95 for 2K's most recent version.
I've always heard 2K had good NFL games but I only play college football so EA wins there. I think EA's NHL games are better also, as Chumpstain said NHL 09 was worthy of Sports game of the year.
I quit playing basketball games a few years ago because nobody was making good basketball games. I don't think I've liked a basketball game since SNES/Genesis.
I played NBA 2k7 when I first got a 360 and I thought it was fantastic. I've heard that the later 2K basketball games were as good if not better.
I loved most of EA's NCAA football games on the PS2, and I think they've only been getting better on the PS3 (that's just hearsay, though). I also think Madden is fantastic and Madden 10 might be my favorite sports game of all time.
