Yeah but. Hulk Hogan in 1995 was drawing 1.0 buyrates with Vader. Hulk Hogan in 2008 was drawing a .4 Nielsen on Country Music Television.

Yeah, and WWE isn't the WWF in 1995. The WWF in 1995 was a diminished company recovering from Vince McMahon's years long battle with the US government over his steroid trial and most of the top stars from the 80's defected to WCW.

WWE in 2009 has spent 8 years as the single most dominant wrestling promotion in the world, has had the creative services of both Eric Bischoff and Paul Heyman, absorbed the combined histories of WCW and ECW to add to its championship lineage, has three weekly programs on cable television and one weekly program on network television, regularly sells out tours internationally, and annually fills if not sells out STADIUMS for WrestleMania.

WWE is not some weakened lion ripe for the kill, regardless of two McMahons off doing other things. Jim Ross says this all the time in his blog and his words should be heeded (I'll paraphrase here): TNA should worry only about improving their product and not about what WWE is doing. Much less directly challenging them.

JR is also a tool of Vince, too. He is not going to say "Hey, TNA is at least interesting more then I can say about Orton/Cena or the revolving title door on Smackdown." No, he is going to do the condensending pat on the head for TNA. I do agree that TNA is not full ready to take on WWE, but I think they are more ready then people think.

WWE is not at 1995 levels, but they are not at attitude era level either. They have been treading water for years correctly building new stars. However, Orton, Cena and Batista have been the only ones to catch fire. Out of those three Orton is not a mainstream guy, Batista is one bad break from the end of his career and Cena has been kiddified, so much that he a almost a non-factor of getting new fans or creating mainstream buzz. They do have Miz, Morrison and stand favorites Jericho, Rey and DX. Yet, if with that going on, the ratings are almost half as they were during from 2001 and 2002. TNA needs to figure out this Hogan situation once they do and they can use for momentum for the entire organization then yes, they should go after Vince, because Vince will eventually go after them.

Or, you know, he just wouldn't mention TNA if he were really trying to bury them.

"WWE is not at 1995 levels, but they are not at attitude era level either."

No other wrestling company has ever been at "attitude levels", and WWE was only there for a couple of years. To expect them to continue to be a pop culture phenomenon for decades at a time is a bit silly.

I'd wager that WWE could be putting on shows of 2000-quality and they'd still be drawing the same ratings right now. Wrestling is cyclical, always has been - the mainstream public just don't like it right now. The huge 7s and 8s of 1999 and 2000 weren't made up of full-on wrestling fans, they were guys and gals who, for a brief period of time, hopped on the Austin/Rock bandwagon because those two guys were genuine crossover stars. And who can fault WWE for not stumbling across another one or two like them since? Those guys were and are exceptions rather than the rule.

I'm not sure if we have the NXT TakeOver logo here at the W. Live from Orlando, FL. Tye Dillinger, Roderick Strong, No Way Jose Kassius Ohno, and Ruby Riot vs. Sanity -- Dain pinned Dillinger with the Ulster Plantation.
