Reading this made my day.

http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/10/28/schwarzenegger-gives-california-legislature-a-hidden-finger/

I kinda doubt the man himself was behind it but I love thinking he actually might be that devious.

EDIT: Sorry, forgot to complete my attribution - this was originally reported by the San Francisco Bay Guardian (sfbg.com).

Purely coincidence.

No way is he smart enough to pull that off on his own.

Points in favor of it being Arnie: Usage of the word lamented.

If I've ever been more wrong on anything than I was on the concept of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, I don't know what it was.

Oh, that is sooooo deliberate, with 100% certainty of plausible deniability. That's excellent. I'd guess his verbal response was rather different than the polite-but-firm written one, an industrious aide crafted it, & the boss absolutely "signed and approved". :-)

I agree Emma. At the very least I would think that someone else came up with this, showed him, and Arnie smile and says "PERFECT!". Or maybe he did come up with it himself. Either way the buck stops with him. And in this case, the buck stops with him being TOTALLY AWESOME.

You know, I really don't know what to put here. Close your eyes and thank of something funny!

I'd imagine - having once done something similar myself for a class project - the initial draft would have been close enough to "fuck you" to generate the inspiration. A bit of clever editing here and there, and voila!

Yeah, it's great, especially considering the $800 million cut from the UC system and the 32% increase in tuition students are facing in the next year, the closure of state parks, the crisis facing Cal-States and community colleges, the potential loss of the Cal-Grant program, and the general disrepair of the entire state.

Personally, I don't entirely blame him for the mess we're in - because it truly isn't ALL his fault (it's partially his fault, but not all his fault) - but it's TOTALLY AWESOME that he's spending his time telling legislators to go fuck themselves via an easter egg in a veto. AWESOME!!

And now that I'm on a state mandated furlough (even though exactly ZERO percent of my salary comes from the state), I'll have even MORE time to laugh.

Pretty sure that Arnie didn't invent the budget forecasts based on property and income tax numbers that didn't work out due to a recession.

Maybe if institutions were allowed to save money instead of being forced to make sure they spend every penny they get - so they don't lose it next year - we'd be in a better place.

The institutions aren't blameless in this.

Or you know... the State of California setting up the property tax burden to sit disproportionally on recent homeowners, who then ended up underwater and defaulting on their loans... so not only are people losing their homes, state and local governments are losing a huge percentage of their projected total property tax income.

FWIW - the odds of this being a coincidence are one in two billion. NPR ran a story last night in which they interviewed a mathematician and cryptologist who felt the indication that this was at least somewhat orchestrated was the use of the word "kick" (transcript).

Now that you mention it, "kicks the can down the alley" hardly seems like the right phrase. "passes the buck" or something of that ilk seems more appropriate.

Nah, from the way it's written I'm guessing it was entirely pre-planned. Otherwise he would've either sent a standard "no dice" letter or sent one referring specifically to the Bill in question.

Besides, thinking that it was planned from the start only adds to its brilliance for me. Also adding to the awesome (for me only I guess) is that if you include the "Sincerely" it sounds like he's doing it in Glaswegian.

Serious arguments over use of his time be damned, I think much more of Arnie today than I did at this time yesterday. His staff should be putting him forward as the letter's sole author, not distancing him from it.

That makes me feel good. Seriously, though, this actually makes me like the government down there better. Now, if only Canada could get Wayne Gretzky to some post. No wait, isn't he already a member of the Order of Canada?
