Aww, shucks. Can we both agree now at least on the fact that the umpiring in Game 4 makes Jocko Conlan spin in his grave? Posada and Cano BOTH getting caught off third made me throw up in my mouth, and McClelland calling Cano safe made it all worse.

I've stopped watching this game (ECW is on) but I kinda wondered if the successful appeal call was a makeup call for the incorrectly called pickoff play (which was replayed all over the stadium and certainly not missed by the crew chief) - of course, Buck and McCarver are buried so deep in the rectum of...somebody related to the Yankees that they forgot all about the pickoff play INSTANTLY, yet spent something like the next full inning talking about the appeal call. So my theory wasn't even floated by the national broadcast team.
I was a little surprised they spent the time they did noting the missed DP call at third given that the call ended up favourable to the Yankees so you'd expected they should hush up and let it go.
DISCLAIMER: I am biased against Buck and McCarver and look for excuses to bitch about them
Whatever biases you have, you're absolutely right that it was mind-blowing that they spent so much time on the blown call on the tag play, but didn't once mention that it effectively canceled out the blown call on the pickoff. I too was thinking it was a make-good call.
The officiating in the playoffs has been really bad.
Ok, I finally woke up from my coma. A 10-1 loss is absolutely brutal. Having said that, I still think this goes 7. The Angels should win Lackey's game 5 start and I do think they can beat Pettite in Game 6.
One point I'd like to make, though. I love how ESPN is talking about the large number of blown calls in the postseason without seeing the bigger picture. Has anyone else noticed that all of these calls (Mauer's "foul ball", the neighborhood play, Cano's baserunning call last night) are going in favor of the Yankees? It's a coincidence, I'm sure, but an unfortunate one.
It looked like another Yankees comeback win, but something funny happened along the way and Phil Hughes allowed some critical hits.
Brian Fuentes still looks really shaky in those 9th innings and I still maintain that a one-run lead isn't safe with him on the mound.
Andy Pettite is certainly beatable and I think the Angels could steal Game 6 in New York, setting up an interesting scenario with C.C. Sabathia going on four days rest after previously going on three days for a pressure-filled Game 7.
Hell of a game. If the Angels do steal Game 6, a Game 7 start by Sabathia would make him unavailable for Game 1 of the World Series. (Provided the Yankees won said Game 7.)

Well, ESPN is totally in the tank for the Yankees (and Red Sox and to a lesser extent the Cubs), so this will never come up on their programming. This is an example of the unconscious bias at work --- the umpires aren't intentionally trying to swing things in NYY's favor, but they know in the back of their minds that any close call will be over-analyzed and torn apart by the New York media if it goes against the Yankees. Just another reason why the Yankees are the most unlikable team in sports history.
Kirk, crackers are a family food. Happy families. Maybe single people eat crackers, we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know. It's a market we can do without.

Walking Cano would have had me worried, but when he hit him, I was resigned to the Yankees at least tying the game, and was, at that point, just hoping we wouldn't give the Yankees the lead.
I don't quite know what to make of Fuentes. I know people aren't sold on him as a closer, but tend to think its more of a self-fulfilling prophecy - that a lot of the fans' uncertainly has affected his game. I certainly don't get the sense that he's slogging off. But damn, if he hasn't made some whopper mistakes.
I'm also not sure what to make of Scioscia pulling Lackey - even given that Oliver was pretty consistent up until last night. That switch alone might just be the end of Lackey in an Angels' uniform - even if we pull this out in the end.

Trading for Kazmir and the 2 years remaining on his contract was probably the end of Lackey in insert location of the day here. Fuentes was pulled from the closers role in Colorado before, so having little faith in him is justified. However, it isn't like he gave up a 500 foot homer to A-Rod in Game 2, he gave up a Yankee Stadium pop-up. And, it wasn't like K-Rod was lights out in the playoffs the past few seasons for the insert location of the day here.

I don't dispute that Scioscia isn't exactly Lackey's favorite person in the world right now. But Scioscia's always believed in Lackey, enough to give him the start in Game 7 of the World Series in his rookie year. With Lackey about to hit his prime, I don't think Artie Moreno will let him walk away without a fight. There's nothing like a huge ass contract with a boatload of money to settle a tiff between pitcher and manager.
The rain delay may have just won this series for the Yankees. With a potential Game 7 pushed back a day, it would mean Sabathia goes on a full 5 days rest. Of course, it would also mean Lackey could go on 3 days rest. Stay tuned, because things will get interesting if the Angels push the series to 7.
The real winners of a Game 7 are the fans...and the Phillies.
Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you... Bring on the mutants!
I disagreed with the call to stick with Pettitte, because if we had lost, you'd have only had Sabathia for two games in the World Series (Game 3 and either Game 6 or 7). It worked out OK, though, in large part because Anaheim shot itself in the foot again - you just KNOW Kazmir's going to get run out of town with pitchforks for blowing the Angels' only chance to break Mariano in the ninth. (He might give up one run, but NO WAY was he going to give up three.)
smark/net attack Advisory System Status is: Elevated (Holds; June 18, 2006) While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

Someone's laughing their ass off about this over in Tampa. Especially since the Angels are stuck with Kazmir for a good, long time.
At least this loss can't be blamed on Guerrero. He had some good hits this series and deserves to come back for another year. But now with both him and Lackey about to hit free agency and Kazmir's self-destruction, the Angels will have a lot of questions to deal with this offseason. Good grief.
I still hate A-Rod with a passion and anxiously wait to see what the cutthroat Philly fans can do to rattle him.
On paper, this looks like an awesome World Series. Lee and Sabathia in Game 1 should be a classic. I know whatever always knew they'd make the big dance, but I don't think this is what he had in mind.

You thought they'd pitch him tonight and then in 2, 5, and then 7 on two days' rest? After several straight starts on three days' rest? I suppose it's not impossible, but I think that would be asking a lot.

You wouldn't start him in Game 7 (you'd start Pettitte), but you'd be guaranteed to have him for an emergency relief appearance if you needed it. You wouldn't have that guarantee the other way. So it was a risk-reward scenario: Girardi took the risk and got the reward, but I would have gone with the safer route.

Well the reason I said Yankees in 6 is because I factored in Petite as the game 6 starter. He is virtually unbeatable after a Yankees loss. I cant criticize Girardi's decision to start Petite at all. Petite is great after losses, he is one of the great post-season pitchers at least of his era, if not of all time, and I liked the idea of holding Sabathia for two reasons. First, the obvious reward of getting Sabathia for Game 1 of the WS. Second, holding Sabathia until game 7 gave the Yanks a literal "ace in the hole". There are no guarantees in baseball, and if the Angels had beaten Sabathia in Game 6, you would then have to go with Petite as your game 7 starter. That wouldn't be so bad, but you were much better off with Sabathia in the game 7 spot, your best vs their best. Now Sabathia can pitch 3 games in the WS, and the Yankees need just one win from their other starters. Faith in Petite paid off, and the Yankees are now set up in the best possible way for the WS.

Just heard the news, too. Devastating. So young. Just 7 years ago the group The Baseball Project was singing about his chances of being the first 30 game winner since McLain. https://thebaseballproject.bandcamp.com/track/30-doc
