That's what the head of Florida State's Board of Trustees thinks:

Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said Sunday he isn't planning on quitting anytime soon.

That could leave school officials in a difficult situation.

Florida State is 2-3 for the first time since Bowden's inaugural season at the school 33 years ago, and 0-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference for the first time, prompting questions about his future at a program he transformed into a collegiate powerhouse.

On Sunday, Jim Smith, the chair of the university's Board of Trustees, told the Tallahassee Democrat it's time for a change.

"My hope is frankly that we'll go ahead, and if we have to, let the world know that this year will be the end of the Bowden era," said Smith, according to the newspaper. "... I do appreciate what he's done for us, what he's done for the program, what he's done really for the state of Florida.

"But I think the record will show that the Seminole Nation has been more than patient. We have been in a decline not for a year or two or three but I think we're coming up on seven or eight. I think enough is enough."

Smith confirmed to the newspaper that Florida State president T.K. Wetherell and legal counsel Betty Steffens have been working with Bowden's successor, Jimbo Fisher, to finalize a head coaching contract.

Fisher was named head coach in waiting in 2007. Citing unnamed sources, the newspaper reported that the deal would be for at least five years.

"The president intends to announce we've negotiated a contract with coach Fisher," Smith said, according to the Democrat.

It was not clear if that deal would start next season.

I have a few thoughts on this. First of all, I think FSU administrators are idiots if they expect handing the rest of the keys over to Fisher will mean a return to the 1990s-era Seminoles, considering Fisher already has pretty much all the keys anyway.

I think Bowden and Paterno should both retire, because I think it's embarrassing to their teams for these guys to be patrolling the sidelines, but I'm not one of the four- or five-star recruits Paterno still manages to pull in, so what do I know (though I don't believe Penn State is actually that good right now).

Florida State is clearly the fourth-best out of four BCS conference teams in Florida right now, and if that's not good enough for the university then a coaching changes makes sense. But Jimbo Fisher won't be the answer - or, at least, I see no reason to believe it.

You are misinformed about what control Fisher has had. He's not been handed any keys and has had to fight idiots like Amato every step.

His play calling is bland at times, but his recruiting and QB coaching is as good as it gets. I'll think he'll make a much better head coach than OC, if he lets someone else call the plays.

But I agree with the Trustee, that it's time. I would prefer Bobby announce it now to give the kids something to play for and recruits some reason to sign at FSU.

I didn't mean he was calling all the shots just yet, but if Fisher - who has already been anointed the heir to Bowden's throne and is running the offense and much of the recruiting - is having to compete with Chuck Amato for authority, then that would only have me more worried if I were an FSU fan.

This head-coach-in-waiting deal by FSU was a TERRIBLE decision, and it has and will continue to hurt the team.

Fisher has done a very good job recruiting and with the offense. If not for his work, we'd be getting crushed instead of losing close games. He has to compete with Amato because he's been given no real authority with his title, while Bobby named Amato assistant head coach. Amato thinks he trumps Jimbo and it leads to problems.

It's not the head coach in waiting that was bad, it was Bobby not being in charge while giving guys like Amato too much power. If it's Fishers team, let it be his team and tell Chuckie Chest to F-off. Which they may be doing this week.

Fisher isn't hurting, it's Bobby, Amato and Micky that need to wake up. Here's an example. Before the USF game, Bobby didn't come down to do his usual pregame speech. Jimbo didn't know why but he decided to go ahead and talk to the team. Amato got upset and they had it out in front of the team. This wasn't the first time. So when the team comes so unfocused they lose four fumbles in a game they could have won by just protecting the ball? Says to me at least this crap may be distracting them too much. We'll see.

I am hearing crazy rumblings on other message boards abou the Bowden/FSU situation. If only 1/2 of it is true, it may get pretty ugly up there.

The truth is Bobby doesn't want to retire. He's gone to boosters to see if they would pay off Jimbo to leave, and he's not willing to take a payoff and go himself.

Fishers new deal was going to make him coach after next season, but give him control over staff hirings after this one with the expectation Micky would need replacing. Bobby wants Amato as DC, a personFisher can't stand. What would be the point of making Amato DC for one year, knowing Fisher would fire him after?

Bobby isn't willing to give Fisher that control while he's still head coach. So he's digging in, hoping to pull off what Jo Pa did. Only problem for hi
is Jo Pa had the boosters support. Bobby does not.

The boosters are meeting with TK tonight to see if they can pay Bobby enough to retire this year. Bobby met with TK this morning and it was said to have gone as poorly as possible.

Yes, he and Deion have both chimed in. Some other players have taken the other side. Dockett can piss off. He donates no time or money to the school and was a problem when he was there. Deion has rarely done either as well. I respect that they love Bobby, and i do too, but if they can't see he's being stubborn to the detriment of the program at this point then that's their problem.

Doesn't Fisher get something like a $500,000 payoff from the university if Bowden doesn't retire by 2010 (or the end of the 2010 season)? If so, and Bowden is trying to get the boosters to pay off Fisher before that, couldn't that be interpreted as an attempt to subvert the contract and get Florida State in a bigger mess than they're toiling in now? Or is Bobby trying to get the "head coach in waiting" title away from Fisher and give it to Amato? It sounds like a very chaotic situation, but is forcing Bobby Bowden into retirement truly the answer to Florida State's woes?

To clarify the comparisons to Joe Paterno, there was a pretty good power play made by some University powers following the 2004 season to get Joe to retire or name a successor. The AD, University President, and some Board of Trustee members approached Paterno, and there was quite a public upswelling among boosters and fans (including yours truly) that "Joe Must Go." (sources besides my faulty memory: here (pe.com), here (nydailynews.com), and here (query.nytimes.com).

It's honestly sad that the career of a legendary coach may boil down to an administrator caving to the public's demand for instant gratification. What exactly does it do for team morale if you force Bowden out and leave Fisher and Amato to fight for the scraps (assuming Fisher doesn't fire Amato immediately after inheriting the throne)?

Fisher's current contract has a 5 million buyout. If he's not named head coach at the end of next season, he gets that amount, if he leaves early he pays that amount.

I do think Bobby would like Amato to take over when he's done. No one else, and I mean NO one else wants that. I think from this and the Jeff Bowden situation, the majority of fans are seeing it as Bobby being stubborn about the wrong things and feel it's best if he goes. We'd like it to be on decent terms, but that's up to him.

His contract is a one year thing, so all they have to do is not renew it after this season if he decides to be difficult. Sure it would look bad if he makes a stink, but honestly I'm OK with that.

It sounds to me like most of the players like Bowden but believe Fisher will be a great HC so they'll be fine. If they get Bobby to announce he's done after this year, I would hope the players would rally and try to get him some wins before he's done. They all knew Micky was likely done after this year too.

I think they're going to push for him to retire but if he makes a big stink they may let him come back for one more year, but even then they'll let Jimbo hire who he wants as assistants. Meaning Bobby does nothing but collect some more wins and do interviews. I don't think he's going to go for that, but we'll see.

I should add I've been on Bobby's side all this time, supporting him throught the Jeff years for the most part and never calling for or wanting him to leave until he wanted to. But finally this past week, I just couldn't do it anymore. After hearing what's been going on behind the scenes, this team needs real leadership and it's not getting it. Time to move on.

I hope he does that, only because my brother went to Paint BRANCH High back in the 80s.

I can see both sides of this Bowden thing. He's been there long enough, and brought such prestige to the program that he should be able to leave on his terms.

Unfortunately, alot of the people in the university think he's past his prime and needs to go now. It'll be hard to defend the guy if they go 5-7 and miss out on a bowl.

What saved Joe Pa was going 11-1 the next season and losing on a very controversial Michigan game. After that, he is been untouchable even though most of the coaching is done by the assistants and he is more or less a figurehead. Bowden is stuck being in a season where even though they beat the piss out of a #5 BYU they had some tough wins against Jacksonville State and loses to some pretty good teams like Miami and South Florida. The BC lose was probably the straw that broke the camel's back, because none of these alumini and boosters realize that Florida State is playing a pretty tough schedule and the talent is not there on the field. They can force Bobby out, but as an outsider having some rich guys tell him to get out while the AD has his thump up his ass is not winning the hearts and minds of the college football world. I also think any "coach in waiting" status is a receipt for disaster. I don't seeing this ending well and probably splitting the school down the middle.

I would disagree they don't have the talent to win. The offense, playing three ranked teams, averaged over 400 yards a game. Ponder has been awesome, the o-line solid. It's been mental mistakes...fumbles, missed blocking assignments, routes and such that have hurt. Some is youth, a lot is a lack of focus.

As for those bashing the coach in waiting, that's crazy to me. Yes, it's causing an issue now, but that's on Bowden. FSU pulled in great recruiting classes the past two years, mainly thanks to Jimbo having that clause. Without it, they would have been in worse shape going forward.

And Bobby said time and time again that if the program ever slipped into mediocrity that he would step aside. He said it in 2001, he said it two years ago, he said it last year. And yet here we are, with the program exactly there and he refuses to do what he said.
