45 - Surfi' Safari with a b side of 409 - Beach Boys - got that for Christmas. Still have it, but nothing to play it on
LP - Meet the Beatles - got it for my 9th birthday from my sister
Cassette - The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get - Joe Walsh
8 Track - J Geils- Live Blow your face out
DAT - The White Album - Beatles
CD - Don't really recall, probably something in Christian blues like Glenn Kaiser/Darrell Mansfield: Trimmed and Burnin'
Mp3 - as in, not ripped from a CD? Probably Cowboy Troy in "I play chicken with the train". I think I downloaded Hammer Time on the same session. Original Napster
We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.
That the universe was formed by a fortuitous concourse of atoms, I will no more believe than that the accidental jumbling of the alphabet would fall into a most ingenious treatise of philosophy - Swift
First Cassette: I want to say Huey Lewis & The News (I was 9 years old, BTW). But it could have been something else.

I still have this cassette. I got it as a gift on my 13th birthday (my parents took my friends and I to see The Golden Child). I listened to it every day for three months.
A Peter Piper Picked Peppers A Ra Rock Rhyme Humpty Dumpty fell down That's his hard time...
First LP - Cream's Disraeli Gears. Eight track was Leslie West's Mountain. Cassette I don't remember. My daughter buys CDs but since I have over 3000 LPs and don't have time to listen to them as it is I don't buy anything anymore. And as an old fart, nothing sounds really new to me but a return of styles I already have. I do need to buy CD's of some of may favorite LPs though.
Question, what is the life of a well cared for CD and MP3 file?
First cassette tape: Bought a pack of crappy blank cassettes that were next to the gum and candy at the grocery store checkout line so I could record music off of my boombox.
First music cassette tape: Judas Priest "Screaming for Vengeance"
First CD: Ratt "Out of the Cellar"
First MP3: Theme music from "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Halloween"
(edited by Kevintripod on 2.10.09 1131) The best part of waking up is not Folgers in your cup, but knowing that Chuck Norris didn't kill you in your sleep.
LP: Not sure. I remember having Disney and Sesame Street records when I was very young. I don't think I ever bought myself an LP. My girlfriend just got a turntable so that might change.
Cassette: I got a cassette player from my dad with two tapes: a Kenny Rogers best-of collection, and the Mini Pops. I never once listened to the Mini Pops. Even back then I thought it was a stupid idea.
Not sure what the first tape was that I bought - I know I got a set of 12 from Columbia House fairly early on. I liked Born In The USA and the David Lee Roth EP with Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody; either of those could have been the first pick.
CD: Again, two from my dad with a CD player: Tone Loc's Loc'ed After Dark and the soundtrack to Days of Thunder. I did not ask for these CDs, for the record. Days of Thunder did not get a lot of play; I cannot say the same for Tone Loc.
No idea what the first CD was that I bought for myself. I hadn't anticipated getting a CD player at the time so I probably just went to the mall and got something that was on sale (and knowing my taste then - and now - almost certainly horrible).
First MP3: Either Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Danger or Inside Out by Eve 6. I'd never heard of either band or either song. I was on a website with a bunch of links to MP3s, but those were the only ones that worked.

For an MP3 file, I'd say pretty much infinite as long as you have a backup copy somewhere. The format is far too ubiquitous to go away any time soon, and the file remains unchanged if you copy or play it. As for CDs, I've kept some for at least 15 years and they're still fine.
Cassette - Probably Bay City Rollers - Greatest Hits
LP - May have been a used copy of Rush's 2112. My musical tastes out of elementary school were entirely formed on cool album cover art (we had NO rock radio and MTV wasn't in existence yet), so I became a life-long Rush and Kiss fan pretty quickly.
CD - Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair. The local record store manager convinced me to buy a CD player (a Magnavox with a noisy chain drive tray) and that was one of very few CD's they had in stock.
MP3 - I purchased Dido's "Life for Rent" album via download just to see what the fuss was about. Eventually replaced it with the CD. I'm not a downloader. I buy the CD's and upload them to iTunes. I've downloaded two albums since...one because it's out of print and hard to find on CD...and the other because the download was a free bonus for pre-ordering the CD (pre-order the CD...get it instantly on MP3).
I actually once owned a car ('75 VW Dasher wagon...yellow with fake wood paneling) with a factory 8-track player, but never actually owned any 8-tracks. They'd long gone the way of the dinosaur by the time I bought it. Somebody had asked me to fix an old 8-track of theirs (Best of the Statler Bros), and I tested it out in the car's player once I'd fixed it. The player still worked.
OH! Well if we're going all the way back to kid stuff, my first cassette came with a Berenstain Bears read-along book. One side had the story from the book and ended with the narrator saying, "Now you can turn the tape over and record a story of your own!" and the other side was blank.
My first kids LP was a 45 of the Superman Movie theme. I still have that somewhere.
When I was like 10 I scammed BMG Music House out of 12 CDs for the price of $.01.
At the time the only music I was familiar with was the music of my parents, which was country music. I'm sure there was a Garth Brooks CD in there somewhere.
I didn't really become acquainted with popular music until the first day of 6th grade, which was the first time the bus driver would let us have the radio on. That would have been 1995. I have large gaps of knowledge of music before that time. For instance, a co-worker of mine couldn't believe that I had never heard Was (Not Was) 1987 hit, "Walk the Dinosaur", though I think that ignorance is bliss in that case.

You reminded me that I bought a K-Tel recordmatic. I can't explain it well but it held around 25 LPs. You would flip the first one and they would all flip forward until the one you wanted to pull out. When you were ready to put it back. It would "magically" stop at the right spot. Coolest thing ever back then.
(edited by DrDirt on 3.10.09 0736) Perception is reality
First LP: I never bought LPs before, so I can thank my parents for buying me Mickey Mouse Disco. I think.
First tape: Cherry Pie - Warrant. My parent's didn't know what to make of it: after growing up on the golden oldies (where the Beatles, BeeGees, and the 'Stones were always on the playlist) I'd go get some hair metal tape.
First CD: Trisha Yearwood's self-titled debut CD. I was sincerely disappointed in the cost of the CD ($30 after taxes) for just about 30 minutes of music.
First MP3...no idea. Not entirely sure music ripped from CDs that are directly put into Sony's minidisc players are considered MP3s due to their compression or whatever (Atrac3+ I think? I dunno) but that'd probably be it.

Yeah, we couldn't afford that kind of cool contraption, Doc, though I do remember it quite well.
Zack Greinke - winning the Cy Young in the Midwest.
My first MP3 was the Bubblegum Crisis soundtrack, simply because I couldn't get it anywhere else outside of my computer. My first CD was the Beatles #1. But nothing can top my first cassette, which was a companion to a scholastic 1st grade reading book I got when I was 6. The subject? 'Knight Rider' goes to Hawaii, where the highlight was Michael and Kit jumping over an active, erupting volcano.
.........
Let me say that again. KIT JUMPED OVER AN ENTIRE F'ING ACTIVE, ERUPTING VOLCANO. And somehow this was supposed to be an educational aid for me. So remember, when my writing looks like crap at times, this is probably one of the contributing factors why.
O.K. all you music historians, I'm slightly out of order here by the time line of my purchase. It's correct and honest. Ti's kinda embarrassing....
Cassette Single - Madonna - "Like a Virgin"... Hey I was young and into the POP thing
CD - U2 War - old release new to me via CD technology! Still have it and still love it.
MP3 - I don't remember why but the song "Scotty doesn't know" from Eurotrip inspired me to get Kazaa and download the song. Qualifies as my first MP3. Not on my playlist anymore.
Never had an LP record outside of what was given to me.
Funny outside of (old) U2, my music taste has changed dramatically.
First LP was kiddie stuff. I went from cassettes to CDs but never had much vinyl. Wait, I think I had a Judas Priest album at one point -- the one with a song about Jack the Ripper? Weird, I forgot all about that until just now.
First cassette was Weird Al's debut album, quickly followed by Chicago 17 and Duran Duran's Rio. (For a few years I'd been taping stuff off the radio, especially American Top 40. First song taped off the radio was, I think, "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang.)
CD, I dunno. I'd been getting CDs for review before I actually bought a CD player, so it was one of the ones I kept, I guess. So maybe Teisco del Ray.
MP3 I have no clue. I'm going to say Paula Abdul's "Straight Up."

My sister gave me two of her tapes for my birthday: Def Leppard's "Pyromania" (which she later took back) and Twisted Sister's "Stay Hungry". My first CD was a Tony Bennett hits album. I do not have any of these items anymore. The earliest record I got was the McDonald's Big Mac contest where if the jingle played all the way to the end, you won some big prize. I didn't win.
Thread ahead: Who's Your Guilty Celebrity Crush? Next thread: What's your favorite TV/radio commercial? Previous thread: What collectors' items do you own?
Okay, now THIS thread could conceivably go on forever because every day you have a new answer. We'll see how this works. ME, LAST NIGHT: Oh...nothing. Oops. (Well, I did watch "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" from about 0220 to about 0225.
